I'm a business owner in Bristol and I can tell you why the high streets are dying - inanely high commerical rents. It's exactly the same issue that people are facing with residential rents. Greedy landlords, propped up by unscrupulous estate agents, are destroying the country. Independent shops and businesses are not supported by the council in any meaningful way. In fact, recently, they've been going out of their way to make life difficult for shop owners, but that's a whole story in itself.

American living in the Chicago suburbs watching this video. The same thing has happened here in the rust belt communites of Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and West Virginia. My home town of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania used to be a place people wanted to live in during the 1960 and 70's. It was almost a boom town. They had to make bigger schools to house all of the new students. Once the steel mills started downsizing or disappearing, the retail shopping stores left and never came back. That was almost 30 years ago! A lot of folks, like myself, had to leave to Pittsburgh PA area to find opportunities elsewhere. I ended up in Chicago. Even Chicago had bad areas very close to the downtown area near the Northwest side. The cheap rent housing of Cabrini Green existed there. In order to get people out of these projects, the government gave those folks rent vouchers to move them into the surrounding suburban apartments outside Chicago. It worked, although to the detriment of those suburban communites, and they demolished the projects and gentrified the area in the Near West side. The near West side of Chicago is now bustling with restaurants, new housing, and hotels. So gentrification can occur, but that usually happens starting from within the downtown areas of the bigger cities. I have a hard time seeing towns like Swindon in the UK or the abandoned suburbs of America's Rust belt ever coming back. There has to be a will and there has to be a way. On a side note, the horse in the public park cracks me up.

One of the most egregious problems is the usual landlord problem; there is no incentive for the absentee landlords and asset management companies that own all the empty, unused and apparently abandoned buildings. As things stand they can sit on the land which will rise in value over time regardless of the state of what's on it. Actually doing anything with the land or buildings is a hassle, whereas it's easier to just sit on land assets as they increase in value, that increase in value being completely untaxed year after year - only being taxed if they sell them.

@@FreedomPhilosophyTV Valuable enough to beat inflation over time. Increases in land value are untaxed too, unlike other investments. Put it this way, it'll net the landlords a lot more than your ISA will even with an abandoned eyesore sitting on it. Landlords can also leverage money against the value of the land. It's win-win for them for doing no work at all - a.k. passive income.

Hi Joe, I live in Swindon and was shocked from watching your video. I'm retired and travel to the town centre about once a week. I've only seen the travellers in the park for the last two weeks. A couple of months ago I was invited to a meeting in a local pub with Heidi Alexander (now replacing Sir Robert Buckland (Conservative) and she is the new Labour MP for Swindon South. In that meeting were people from the local council. When I asked why the arcades were full of closed shops, I was informed that most of the land they were situated on belonged to offshore companies. These companies do not need to open the shops as the land is valuable and increases in price each year. At some time in the future, they will sell the land at great profit. We used to have five Motorola buildings in Swindon, the largest being the Groundwell site, this is a massive building. At one of the other Motorola sites in Swindon, my name was entered in a department competition, and I along with the department head was able to say hello to the late Queen on the Groundwell opening day. Tony Blair auctioned the 3G licenses in April 2000 leaving Chancellor Gordon Brown with a £22.47bn ($35.4bn) windfall. Our customers (some I was informed nearly went bust over the auction), were no longer able to afford our base stations for mobile phones (the mobile phones communicate with the base stations), so the five sites were run down to nothing leaving 3000 out of work. Not well thought out was it really? By the way, it was me who put a suggestion in the suggestion box that a camera should be added to the mobile phone. I got a small cheque and a certificate out of that. Recently Honda decided to move away from Swindon and take the equipment back to Japan. The former MP Sir Robert Buckland had been working with several business people to bring back some use to the site. Indeed I was shocked by what I saw in your video. I was also surprised to hear at the meeting with Heidi Alexander in the local pub, that the councilor informed us that a lot of the land surrounding Swindon is owned by foreigners, and in several cases by Russians. So, does that imply the town is safe from Putin's missiles then? I wish Heidi Alexander all the best in cleaning up the town!😲😵💫

So, I'm hoping with these new positions Heidi will be able to do something about these problems in this town, and the country if it applies elsewhere, which I'm sure it does!😇
