I saw from your pics, stunning to look at but that Butia is going to need a bit of luck - fingers crossed for you! I hope it's an early loaded winter rather than the beginning of a long one, the colder months could still potentially come. Seeing a bit of new growth and the day length going the other way will do a world of good for us both!

@@GeorgesJungleGarden yes a bit of fleece aint doing much ,on the back garden its even colder .it is still reading -5 at hottest part of the day ,the Butia is at least thawing out each day in the spot iv planted it. iv got everything crossed it makes it, it wont enjoy these temperatures at all.

@@staffordshireShane I've had to rely on fleece but know there'll be a few plants that suffer, it's come at a bad time. We've not had your temperatures but the consistent freeze will test a lot. Good luck with everything, hopefully the mild spell coming up will aid things!

Brilliant news mate. I'm really pleased for you and your wife. Life changing in such a positive way but sanctuary is the word of choice to describe the garden moving forwards😂😂. In years to come your daughter will know all the names of the plants in the garden. I bored my kids to tears when we went to Lanzarote recently talking about the palms but the fact they could identify some of the basics told me it'd all been worthwhile. They enjoy sitting out at night next to the fire like your daughter surely will in your sunken firepit area. Given the other distractions you'll now no doubt have by the time you finish it she'll be driving her first car😂. Brilliant news mate👍

Thank you very much Mr Calzone! Yes, it will be nice to get the sunken patio sorted before her 18th at least haha. I also need to make the first bit of the garden (which I'm currently using as my builders yard) child friendly so I'm working on a deadline of early next summer for that one... I'm sure I will take equal pleasure boring her with plant geekiness in future years though, I'm pleased yours past the vigorous palm test!

Love your channel George! I totally agree that the best part of a (jungle) garden is just playing around with the plants end testing what works and what doesn't. I always get feedback from people that I need to leave more room for the plants to grow in the future but it is much more fun this way.
@GeorgesJungleGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Marc! It’s definitely about having that over-planted look, I generally try to have a rough idea about how the structural or permanent plants might grow but the soil in between is certainly an opportunity to experiment and pack loads in. Longer term the bamboos etc will fill out, there may be a bit more plant editing and the jungle look will hopefully be mainly made up of the interesting shrubs etc with extra height over the coming years. It’s definitely fun to experiment and play around with things and find what works and doesn’t with the other planting though!

congratulations to you both George that is fantastic news. The garden is looking great, i can see a new jungle play house with rope ladders and a slide as a nice future project😉, 20 years ago my kids used to build dens in my running bamboos i had a clump of Pseudosasa about 50 feet x 40 feet and 25 feet tall the kids cut 2 narrow paths in and made a den in the middle . They had hours of fun in there,the kids and dogs would just disappear into the bamboo while i was pruning my trees 🤣🤣🤣
@GeorgesJungleGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Shane! The idea of a jungle play house in the 'problem' area between all the bamboo could definitely work... Something to enjoy thinking about over winter! Not that I need any more projects stacking up but anything made out of wood comes together quicker. I bet they loved that bamboo in your garden and no drama your end if they're hacking through it, they'll not hurt that one!
@mltthorn2 жыл бұрын
Excellent excellent video! Loved it all, exceptional shot of fern with butterfly, snow scene and the black screen creating drama for the wind scene. Top marks for that too. Well done on plugging yourself, showed no sign of embarrassing gesture or cringing. So that is excellent too! It can be rather difficult to plug for money but you did it so smoothly. You appeared to have extra enthusiasm today? Which I found contagious and going to watch again. I also noted that you sometimes don't blink as much as I do. Its not a negative, I just wondered if its a tip/trick to engage with the audience? Maybe you shouldn't tell us, tricks of the trade. Oh! And how come Gardeners World haven't head hunted you yet!
@GeorgesJungleGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Michelle, that's very kind of you to say so and I appreciate your insights! I get a lot of video clips and photos of the garden anyway (that's my relaxing time), it's a happy coincidence they work well into these kind of videos and help to break up me just talking. My background is (mostly hobby) photography, it's the speaking side and me actually being on camera that I've had to really work at. As for the plug, personally I don't see it as that so maybe that's why it came easily. I appreciate everyone who donates to my Ko-fi page but I wouldn't ever 'ask' for that, for me, I thought that a bit of explanation about how the whole KZbin thing works rather than just asking people to like / subscribe etc. is more genuine. It's not a large amount of money but enough to give extra purpose for the parts of the process (simple editing, uploading etc.) that do take time I could spend on other things and ultimately it doesn't cost anyone watching anything. As for enthusiasm, honestly, it's probably because I knew I had to get the video done that evening and it was the first day for a while I wasn't tired out! No idea about the blinking, I imagine it's just because for some sections I do have a rough script in my head and have to join the dots together 'live' if you like, that probably takes most of my blinking brainpower haha! I did struggle with this video as my camera (as nice as it is) struggles with overheating and shutting off for 10 mins when it's over 25 degrees or so which is frustrating. I want to upgrade it soon but it's a big investment so that's maybe where the 'plugging' comes in! I bet Gardeners' World don't have these problems!

CONGRATULATIONS...how fun is that...been out in mine all day putting up sun sails for shade because my giant water oak (5 ft diameter)was dying and had to come down, but boy have I got mulch now which holds in the moisture from this wretched Florida heat(I'm on my 3rd t-shirt)and humidity...but I love it, always an adventure in the tropics...!

Thank you very much! Sorry to hear about your oak and shade challenges, I’m sure your garden will adapt and like you say, plenty of mulch now. It definitely sounds like an adventure and I’m not jealous of your humidity, fair play for being out gardening in that!

Congratulations to you and your wife! We had our first little girl 4 months ago and its been absolutely amazing, its very daunting at first but you quickly adapt and they change so much so fast, feels like we have blinked and she's already rolling on the floor, grabbing toys you offer to her and trying to sit up during feeds. You definitely need to still make time for yourself though (and the garden) and encourage your wife to make time for herself too, your life does not have to do a complete U turn and they can fit into your life easily if you do it from the off. I plan on having ours out there with me next year in the garden, would make great bonding time I think, ill arm her with a kids plastic trowel and let her "help" (supervised of course) Hopefully you get a good sleeper like we did, makes a hell of a difference!
@GeorgesJungleGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Michael and congratulations to you too! I appreciate your insights and believe me, I know how fast the time flies by, it's crazy. I don't expect life to take a complete U turn in the sense of our interests, but like you say balance has to be found and I felt I had to address that at least I understand the priorities shift otherwise I'd come across as a bit naive to say the least! I have used it as a chance to simplify my interests and possessions though, I feel like I've moved on from the strength training after 11 years and as long as I get time for the garden and my photo / video stuff I'm happy. I think you're right though about starting off how you intend to go on, wise words. Fingers crossed we get a good sleeper too! I'm sure your daughter will love being out there with you, it's a whole new world to explore and something I'm sure she'll remember at the back of her mind. I'm sure I remember playing in the mud and digging with a spoon when I was younger, who knows what interests that set off! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment and all the best for the next stages of childhood.

Congratulations George, it’s going to be a busy house! Also appreciate you showing some plants that are suffering this summer. We’ve had some let downs in the garden this year, but I’m inspired by yours to use more hardy palms and create structure that’s able to stand up to sun and drought better. We have borders full of brown crispy Crocosmia!
@GeorgesJungleGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Niall, it definitely is! Yes, I think it's only fair to give a representative overview of what's growing well and isn't. A couple of my Scheffleras are still struggling like your Crocosmia but like you've addressed, a lot of the palms etc. seem to have tolerated it a lot better. I suppose it's like growing veg, you're unlikely to have a great year for every plant every year, it's just more frustrating when it's plants you've looked after for a long time that aren't doing well. Congratulations to you and your wife. Thank you for sharing so generosity your garden tips. Can I ask do you look after your garden full time? I appreciate you garden efficiently but wow there still seems a lot to do. I’ve grown cannas for the first time this year but the slugs have eaten them all, and my dahlias! I must admit I feel like murdering them in a really horrible way! However, keep reminding myself of your be organic mantra!
@GeorgesJungleGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video! I have a full time job, around 45 hours a week so the garden is definitely a juggle between that, making the videos and the rest of life. I'd have probably finished the garden build if it wasn't for the KZbin channel! In all honesty, the 'maintenance side' isn't as ridiculous as you might think, a lot of the plants stay out all year and the main thing (this year especially) is watering. When it comes to projects, I find it's amazing what you can do in a single weekend with a burst of enthusiasm and ultimately they'll be done when they're done. I'd rather do a proper job than rush them and I can't justify paying people to do basic work I could do. Any pressure is what I've created making earlier videos about my projects so it's certainly self-inflicted! As for your cannas and dahlias, that's really frustrating, mine got hit badly last year. If it's a particular problem in your garden it might be worth overwintering and getting them started in a greenhouse or polytunnel then planting out after the last spring frosts, that way they have a head start and can't be nibbled off completely while they're small. Keep on persevering though!
