We're all tough cookies up north and Lancashire is well known for the damp/wet weather.........that's the reason why all the cotton mills were built in the county. Manchester (changed from Lancashire to Greater Manchester in the 1970s) was known as 'Cottonopolis' and used to be the centre for the world's cotton industry. Sadly the decline of the cotton industry had a big impact on Lancashire. There is the Queens Street Mill Textile Museum in Burnley. It is the last surviving 19th century steam powered weaving mill in the world. Anyone that's never been in a weaving mill has a shock when they visit the museum at the level of noise that a weaving shed full of Lancashire looms make. No ear protection was given out in weaving mills until the 1970s.
