Our Kikuyu generation is getting lost in immorality... Kikuyu tradition- from the songs, prayers (Magongona) were all sacred.. We have deviated from our cultural practices... How I so wish we can get this generation back in track.. I love the tradition.. Thaai Thathaiya Ngai Thai

Through research, I have learned that these Mau Mau songs were composed by multiple artists majority of whom are unknown. Kamaru (re)recorded them sometime after independence. Since most of the Gikuyu in the 20th century couldn't read and write, artists privy to the war composed songs to inform the masses about the ongoing struggle for independence. In Ngugi Wa Thiongo's memoir, Dreams in a Time of War, Ngugi writes that this song was the song of the Olenguruone squatters who were relocated to the arid Yatta plateau for defying the colonial ban on Africans planting cash crops.

they were simply sang by mau mau warriors to motivate them during the war, kamaru recorded what was being sang in the forest which is extremely important.
@ngugikioi31472 жыл бұрын
@@mercifulwarrior18 Very important indeed. Infact there could be more Mau Mau history in these songs than in the books. Kamaru curating the songs is very important to history.

Aint this some info though, I actually didnt know this. Am enlightened.
@mercifulwarrior18 Жыл бұрын
@@mikenjogu821 basically 80% of kikuyu are in darkness just like you were and know nothing about where freedom came from, which quite sad for our tribe.
@ngugikioi3147 Жыл бұрын
@@mikenjogu821 Great. MauMau history is readily available in MauMau songs. Just like children's songs (Kanyoni Ka Nja, Kondo Gakwa, etc.), Gikuyu folk songs were spread orally for millennia due to a lack of technology. The majority of MauMau song authors are not known, but luckily, Kamaru recorded them for the benefit of the entire nation. The only tragedy is that most modern Gikuyus have rejected the language.
