I bought the new spot 400. Great build quality, nice and bright with heaps of different modes and red light. Slim profile and a bonus it looks good.

Just tested the storm 500 over the weekend camping. Total winner for long lasting bright light. Plugged into small power bank 10,000 amh worked really well. 19hrs of 250 lumes. 7hrs of 500 lumes from full charge. I have millions of Petzels lights that burn out at 2hrs and won't work off a power bank!! The 500 r was the only answer for no more light problems!! 70 euro well spent.

Great review. I agree with the 3x functions(low, mid, high) Less messing around, especially when your hands are freezing.

Recharge for storm 500r is a bit much for me and moray frustrating is its micro usb for recharge input. What is this 2012? lol. Even iPhone is usb-c now. I’ll be turning back in I’d rather have to worry about batteries then trying to find a cord I don’t own anymore. But yes sure the headlamp is great, but I’ll just grab another spot 400 with battery option.

I think the Storm 500R got caught in between Black Diamond (and everyone else's) shift to USB-C, because I've just received their latest headlamp - the Distance 1500 - and that features USB-C. Like you say, any brand that's still using Micro USB is living in the dark ages!!

Can this lamp stay on while the battery is charging? Having a long cable, can I use it when it is connected to a power bank? Can it be used at full power while charging? Does it heat up a lot then? Thank you!

I have seen that the 500r can be used this way. I can’t decide between the r or non r where triple A batteries can be used or a rechargeable battery (needs a small charging block) but that’s USB so could be charged from a power bank.
