Shoddy workmanship has been around since the Romans. Volume house builders have a bad reputation largely due to bad site management and lack of proper training and apprenticeships. Robin is a good example of someone who takes great pride in their work and he’s got the grey matter to go with it, a rare combination nowadays. Thank you Robin keep up the good work.

@@vicinglis3736 Ridgeons were shocking during the first lockdown. They just shut straight down with no thought about when/how they would start back up again. It doesn't surprise me at all that they are struggling with their stock of material. They are no way the company they were 20 years ago. My local timber merchants bent over backwards to keep their customers going through this difficult period, and I don't forget this every time I'm ordering materials. All these shortages are doing my head in. The extension I am currently building had to change to all hardwood as no pine available. The house up next is all engineered timber as has big canterlever section. Order now for sometime in July. What makes it worse is all day at the job site I watch load after load of pine go past all heading to the docks to ship to China. Every state is shipping tons out and we can't get any anywhere in Australia. Go figure.

As a builder for 20 odd years it would be could to bring up material costs, especially with the price of timber and generally a lot of materials prices going through the roof lately. Priced up 2 jobs last year to start this year and there's a huge increase on both due to inflation. Can make things very tricky with the wrong clients.
@marcusdaviso3 жыл бұрын
From what I gather from forums in Germany, the U.S and here where I am in France prices have all gone up and material availability down. Seems like some sort of conspiracy between governments and the big suppliers. I'll be adjusting my prices accordingly, good luck wherever you are.

As a landscape gardener+farmer,I disagree with your statement on building standards slipping..I think today's standards have never been lower,the standard of NEW builds today are just shocking,,the NHBC certificate that comes with a lot of NEW builds isn't worth the paper it's written on..Big house builders are THE worst culprits in my opinion for lack of standards, they cut corners to maximise profits..I've seen this time+time again in past 10/15 years..We bought a farm with 60 acres,and the house was built in 1822 Quality craftsmanship,,You won't find many NEW builds in as good as shape in that time....

Hi Barry, if you are using a builder then if you go for full plans then there are no excuses down the line if the builder has not allowed for the correct building regulations specifications etc, if you work on a building notice the ease of the building execution will depend on how helpful your building inspector is!!!

Robin, was the height of the wooden cross-bar critical and, if so, how did you get it projected out that far? Also, what is the white tube coming out of the corner of your new footings- I remember that it may tunnel through the foundations on the earlier video?
@ukconstruction3 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, the white duct is for a new water main pipe to be passed through once we have it moled under the ground, The height of the wooden cross bar was not critical just needs to allow the string lines enough ground clearance over the sides of the trenches etc, many thanks for your comment!!

Ok…myth 1 is that there were shortages of materials like cement… the construction industry was NOT CLOSED DOWN BY COVID -19…there was never any shortages…what there was, was closure of builders merchants, and they’re inability to supply some heavy side products…due to their own inadequacies and lack of ability to actually plan anything properly… in some other circumstances, like the timber industries, some manufacturers actually closed plants and stopped production creating shortages, which has, as they well knew, created a price hike in the cost of timber and sheet materials etc….well bless my soul…who benefits from that…!…so please Robin…get your facts right…!!!
