In this episode we are forming the Structural Dormer roof trimming
I am taking Ed through the structural dormer roof trimming and we do this by cutting all the rafters from a simple template rafter and using this to set everything out, its much quicker and more accurate this way
This is the support for the Dormer construction
I hope you enjoy!!

It should be illegal for all builders to not care as much as you Robin. Ed, you're learning from one of the best I've ever seen. Treasure this moment in your career.

On that note... I bet tradesmen the world over wish they had apprentices of Ed's caliber. He is an awesome student and it shows in the way that he and Robin get things done with minimal fuss.

Credit to you David all carpenters should know how to make a saw horse, but the sad fact is depending on who they get working for, they might just want there work completed especially if there unlucky enough to be working with agencies that contracts them out. Far to common nowadays.

Hello Robin, Fantastic... Practice makes perfect. Years of experience makes job easy and saves a lot of time. I love your template method. When I use template method I was told measure twice before fixing. Now I see you that reminds my technique. I love your work with precision and I like to follow the same way. Every video teaches me something new. Ed is very lucky to learn skills, gain knowledge, and tips of the trade. God bless you and your family. Best wishes from Leicester ENGLAND. Ahmed

Dormer window kit I used to call them. Work out one and keep patterns of everything to build the rest. You should build an eyebrow dormer to show how that is done. Then show the tiling of it with all the guage changes to create the curve. Balcony dormer with lead dressed deck frontage. Or a Cupola with a weathervane. So many interesting things you can do with a roof. Or you can put up trusses and get bored.

Yourself, The Tall Carpenter,Gid joiner,A&E, and Daniel Cox,top joiners who share their experience and skills, and joiners never stop learning, watching guys like you and the others is invaluable to young joiners, and apprentices should be watching all of these joiners .

Big ups for a bang up job, these gentlemen show how it's done with timeless craft at its finest. I can't think of a better and more satisfying way to get a complex structure right than working with this kind of templates and jigs. In my mind I call them the master parts - reference parts and mockups with the right proportions and angles that everything else gets measured by. Also well done one the staged nailing - first get everything set up right with some minimal placeholders, and then fixate it all together. Now my hands itch to get to building stuff.

Hi Robin, great video. Can you please advise on the nail used to fix the rafters, is it a 90mm Galvanised smooth shank or should you use a ring shank for roof construction ?

Not sure why the dormer wall is poking out above the rafters? Maybe I missed something? But I'm sure it will become obvious as the build progresses. Flashing maybe??
