Scribing the last cladding board to finish the job. In this video I show you how to mark and cut a long scribe against the really uneven brick wall
I use a jigsaw for this process and do the cut from the underside this technique is used by carpenters and joiners across the globe and is a frowned upon by some!!!!

That line you cut is fairly similar to when I try and make a straight cut with a jigsaw 🙂

Lovely job Robin, great finish. I love doing scribe work in my DIY/renovation works, it's so satisfying when it comes out perfectly, which it surprisingly often does. I did a scribe of the inside of a stone chimney last year to make a metal template above a wood burner. It was very complicated (and upside down) but it was near flawless (for something nobody will ever see!). I also scribed tiles (cut with a grinder) for a hearth on the same job, which also worked perfectly. If I'd hired somebody to do the work, I suspect they'd have just done a straight cut and grouted or cemented the gap, but it's amazing how much better it looks when scribed. Have to say, I much prefer working in wood over metal or tiles though.

Good morning, Robin. What a beautiful work site. Nice to see that pup running around too. Of all the sophisticated reflections and comments I could conjure, what I take from this the most is: as you get old, your pants start to fall down. Now I wear a carpenter woodworking apron- thank you for the smile Cheers, -Jonathan Ps- I see the gas charged Milwaukee brad nailer: wonderful tool. Pps- In our shop we went to all stainless a few years back: every brad, screw, bolt... inspired by my marine/boat work. Now when you reach for a fastener there is never a second guess, you know it is ALWAYS stainless.

Agreed with the previous comment Quality is what we need more of in Construction, everyone wants to get in and out quickly it seems and the quality suffers, but I get that customers need to also be prepared to pay for quality!

Hi Robin, all my manual saw cuts have a backing bevel! Great channel to watch, just a shame it's been after I've done most of my flat roof extension, but I'm pleased that it appears that I did most of it right, I had the furrings made for me, the cladding videos will come in useful. I assuming the same principles apply to plastic?, woods nice but it's the upkeep that puts me off. The original bungalow, where I live now, the sites has been in our family for over one hundred years, was of wooden construction and I can remember that every year my Grandad and then my Dad would creosote it up until it was knocked down and rebuild with brick. There are a couple of walls, not all of the bungalow was timber, where the walls are, lets say, out of true and it would be nice to clad it as a nod to the past. You are a master craftsman at work, Lawrence

A beautiful scribe. Always struggle with this in different applications/areas. Such a good thing to know, as it really shows off the skills, and it's something the client can see and appreciate. As most of our work is usually "behind the scenes" so to speak. Brilliant job Robin mate. Really enjoyed this one. Would love to see you show scribing on other areas too( plinths, fillet pieces etc).

Great timing for this series of vids. I am just about to timber clad a barn conversion. 👍 very useful. One concern is the twin and earth cable powering the flood light on the wall next to where you are working. Twin and earth cable is not UV stable and easily damaged. ?

Top job. Am I right in thinking that the cladding is held in with 18 gauge Brad nails? I have a domestic shed cladding project this year and was wondering if 18 (or 16) gauge brads are good enough.

what do you use to fasten the boards to the timber is that a 16g fastener
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 3 ай бұрын
Mainly 16g and 18g if there is enough fixing points or batten courses, here we had the battens at about 450 centres and we used a pair of 50mm stainless steel 18g brads on each fixing point (through the face) if the battens where at 600 centres we would have stepped up to 16g

Is wood movement a concern with it being tight to the brick work?
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 5 ай бұрын
Hi Dan, the cladding scribe has a couple of millimetres of gap and also the tongue and groove at the adjacent board has an expansion space so it will be cool, but if it was jammed in then this could be a problem!!
