Ukip's Godfrey Bloom tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy he does not believe the phrase "bongo bongo land" is racist. It's certainly caused a stir though - so Krishnan asked if he had apologised anyway...

Official from Channel 4 "We're not interested in where a billion pounds a month goes, but we'd rather hear about bongo drums" Straight from the horse's mouth, as it were. Hope it's not a brown horse, I bet that's racist too. Channel 4 needs to get its priorities right. Disgraceful. Where is the real political debate?

I don't see why "bongo bongo land" is racist. There was soft drink called Umbongo. Nobody complained about that. Basically this whole interview is an arrogant immigrant interviewer, a settler-colonialist, spewing his anti-white racism against an indigenous Brit, Godfrey Bloom. THAT is the only racism that went on here.

why are channel 4 still broadcasting these videos in mono sound? plus well done for getting rid of one of the most colourful and honest politicians we had, who time after time was brave enough to speak the truth on the EU. What a shame he won't be able to play a role in UKIP at the time of their greatest success. He says he isn't suited to party politics, no, what he can't cope with is this kind of sanctimonious rubbish and this horrible media nightmare world where any kind of joke or sign of being a human being rather than a robot is outlawed. An utter disgrace.

Which 'race' of people are from Bongo bongo land...?
@peaceyteavo
@peaceyteavo 10 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Goldman Absolutely not. It's applying a negative stereotype to black Africans which obviously stems from race, it has heavy and obvious condescending and belittling overtones that could only ever be used in a racist context. Once again, acting ignorant to what is so obviously meant here is completely redundant.
@peaceyteavo
@peaceyteavo 10 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Goldman Well, the fact he claims it would have been fine 'years ago' tells us everything we'd ever need to know. He must be insane to use such a freakishly old fashioned and inflammatory phrase. He's either unbelievably out of touch with the last 40 years of society or he deserves no place in politics
@peaceyteavo

Did you read my earlier comment at all? I thought I made it fairly clear, and ARTICULATED how this is racist
@peaceyteavo
@peaceyteavo 10 жыл бұрын
***** If he or I didn't already make it glaringly obvious to you (by this point I weep for your intelligence), I think most/all/themaninthevideo would reason that he's referring to black people
@peaceyteavo
@peaceyteavo 10 жыл бұрын
***** BOOM, that's exactly what I was waiting for. 'then ur tha rel racist lol'. No. Just because I've identified obvious racism doesn't make me the racist. Acting ignorant to what is glaringly obvious doesn't hand you any moral high ground, it only lends to the fact that you set this little trap to prove nothing. Pointing out/identifying racism where it's really quite obvious doesn't make you racist. Might I ask you what you think he meant by 'bongo bongo land' and why you think the vast majority of human beings found it absolutely inappropriate?

It comes as a surprise to me that the word bongo is racist. I looked up a recipe for bongo juice (which is an alcoholic drink I tried) and I'm bombarded with stories of racism. I'd like to end on this statement. "Racism is taught and the internet taught me racism today"... However, I don't accept it as racism because I would never use the term to be anything but a drink. I choose to live my life without being offended by every other word and gesture.

Grow up, suck it up and get on with your life. I think we all understand what really is offensive. There is no shortage of small minded people, including the media , that can't wait to point out something to be offended by on someone's behalf.

exactly and good point. I fail to see how 'bongo bongo land ' is a racist remark. Its simply a description commonly known reffering to usually the african nation. but that because of the drums they love and are known for, thats all it is in my view, there is no hurtfull ness in anyway to people living in africa, the only thing it did do was make Nigel aware of 'opinions based on this subject that even if wasnt right damaging the party appearance its still going to damage the appearance no matter what. Farage did the right thing by sacking him , but bloom wasnt being out of order or racist by the comment . words can appear to be racist but ultimately its whats in your heart and mind that makes you racist. Media miss the true racist issues by continuing hunting these 'minor' 'on the fence' comments .

I like how this guy doesn't even know what 'bongo, bongo Land' is, and the interviewer still tries to accuse him for being racist, lol. If a term is racist then it shows that you have belief of racism and that another race is inferior, how can you show to have the belief and at the same time not actually have the belief? How can this guy be 'accidentally' racist and not know it? And how the hell is 'Bongo, Bongo' racist anyway!? Even if it was an insult to a race, it still doesn't make you racist, that's a bit of a stretch. 'Niger' is used as an insult to someone who happens to be black, some racists say it, but that doesn't mean everyone who says it is racist, they just tried offending a black person, it's a swear word, but directed at black people. You could say the same about 'bitch', which refers to women, so if you say bitch aloud or call a woman a bitch, does that mean you hate all women and think they are inferior? Think of all the people who have said bitch, are those people now misogynists? Apply the same logic to 'Niger', we've been brainwashed to think of it like saying Lord Voldemort name. Racism is always, always, always about the intent of the person, and the beliefs of the person, that a race is inferior to his own, or another. It's not merely offending someone or making a distinguish between races, etc. it's much more.

Is it just me or has anyone else gotten a headache listening to the interviewer go on and on and on and on and on about Bloom's silly phrase? He answered the question. We can make our own minds up, thanks very much. . And politics is serious business and not a circus? *Snort!!* I think that Bloom used the term "Bongo Bongo Land" in the same sense as the young say "Whatever". What do you expect from the "Love thy Neighbour" and "Man about the House" generation, bless 'em. The fact that Pakistan, for example, takes foreign aid and buys F-16 jets needs addressing. Sure, those jets need a lot of money to maintain and keep in fighting shape, but I don't think that that is where aid money needs to go. It's kind of like someone on welfare benefits using the money to pay for the ongoing costs of their Audi R8 Quattro.

Bongo Bongo Drums to me mean the old Tarzan films and quite rightly relates to Africa and Africans…. He has a point he was brought up in that era and was quite rightly pointing out how back dated a lot of of African politics are…

***** During Bloom's "bongo-bongo" speech: the ONLY country he mentioned was Pakistan. Moreover; the main thrust of his argument being that the UK gave monies to "bongo-bongo land" where said monies were spent on Ferraris & Ray-Bans. I.E. He sought to tar ALL undeveloped countries [from Pakistan to Africa] as lacking integrity & moral fibre so as to justify ending development programmes. This: in much the SAME WAY as in the US when ALL black people were similarly tarred as "savages & inferior" so as to justify enslavement & much worse. i] Given that U say U're an educated black man who lives in Africa; & yet who argues that Bloom's comments are in NO way racist: it is inconceivable that U anything other than a fraud pretending to be an educated black man who lives in Africa!! ii] Whilst making a great thing of your being educated [as U do]: as if being educated in itself gives weight to your opinions is also somewhat shallow. For academics do NOT wield their qualifications as if qualifications in themselves lend weigh to the quality of ones argument: relying instead on substance rather than self-professed self-importance as U do!! Whilst the arguments U proffer are the most shallow dim load of old cringeworthy bollocks!! BTW: IF Bloom's point was that bongo-bongo land was where the corruption takes place then SURELY we ALL live in bongo-bongo land!! BTW!: How odd that your re-arrival here has led to your posts receiving many thumbs-up!! Just coincidence eh :-)
