“I swear he’s not my kid sometimes.” That ranks amongst the top 5 worst things you could say about your son. Damn. My soul would be crushed if I ever saw the footage of that. Although I’m sure Wild Bill has said it to his face numerous times. He’s an excellent captain but that’s just sad to hear. Hell, I cried when I would lose a wrestling match in high school because I’d run through a brick wall for my coach and he wasn’t even my dad.

Also, what a horrible thing to say about a woman (assuming she's just a normal, non-abusive woman). The worst insult you can throw at a guy is to tell him he's effeminate (i.e. a woman). Can be good but wont be, because "i dont get along with my dad"....changes ship "oh hey lads, be nice to me and i might do my simplest engineering duties right" If Zack cant say "no i dont want to work on your deck, dad", he has to suck it up and give 100% anyway. Yes, Bill is tough on the crew, but fair at the same time. Zack's attitude is far beyond him not caring, it seems like it is stemming from some sort of resentment toward Bill. The question is, where is the resentment coming from? And, I don't think Bill "not being nice" is a valid excuse for Zach's behavior.
@martian6865
@martian6865 3 жыл бұрын
I would assume the resentment stems from his inability to garner his fathers favor. Either by self fulfilling prophecy or downright intentional. It appears to me that Zack doesn’t particularly care how he “looks”. One might observe that he is in no hurry, that he admits he doesn’t want to push. What’s your analysis?
@elihathaway5709
@elihathaway5709 3 жыл бұрын
@@martian6865 I think some of it comes from Bill being "too" hard on him (in Zack's eyes) and potentially something that occurred in Zack's childhood that he won't forgive Bill for. i.e. Bill being absent. Zack has an interesting personality, he get's upset when Bill lectures him on things he did wrong, but then has an attitude like "I know all of this, why are you reminding me".
@Corey-Goodwin
@Corey-Goodwin 3 жыл бұрын
Speaking from personal experience and connecting that to his situation, my analysis is pretty similar. He knows all there is to know, just seems like he’s getting tired of his father yelling, screaming, and threatening him in front of others. He looks at his dad like a dad, while the dad looks at him as a bad engineer. The kid looks up to the dad and the dad frowns upon the kid - thus, the kid starts losing motivation to go fishing. Still tho the thing about the bilge is sketchy he should’ve been on that

To be honest I think Bill was always fair to his crew, and was never overly harsh with them, but never easy on them. I think Nick was the son Bill really wanted to have. I’ve been rewatching starting in 2015 and you can just see how much Bill wanted Zack to step up, but it was Nick who kept getting it done. That’s embarrassing as hell. Having your dad chew your ass on tv like that... good leaders know how to motivate people. That means they understand that not everyone responds well to humiliation in front of the crew. Some people buck up and make sure it never happens again, some people like him get embarrassed and give up. Bad leadership.
@benji3900
@benji3900 2 жыл бұрын
What? You want the crew to think the son gets special treatment? He can't take him off to the side and give him a pep talk after what he was doing just watching people work instead of helping and also shirking his own duties as engineer until the alarms go off. He got a firm but fair dressing down like he deserved. You clearly have no idea about what good leadership is. Especially when it comes to the safety of the entire crew. Just putting that shit off is absolutely unacceptable and needs to be reprimanded publicly.

4:47-6:16.; I thought Zack Larson did go & check out what the problem was. I wouldn't go so far as to say he refused to check it out, per say. All I recall is when the alarm went off, he asked "Where's that alarm coming from?..." because he wasn't sure, exactly what it was. It's not like we heard him say "Screw that!...", "I'm not going down there & checking that out.", or, "Screw this!... I'm not checking this problem out.", or, something like that. Am I missing something else from this part, or, no?...

Zac was never EVER going to be good enough for Bill. Some fathers are just like that. They're too blinded by their own prejudices and can't separate family from the job. I've seen it over and over and over again where sons become disgusted with their Dad's being the boss and treating them like bottom rung employees instead of like sons. And they walk. Eventually, they all walk. Listen to Johnathan Hillstrand talk about his father. Same freaking thing. At the end of this clip when Bill is showing his ass.....if my Dad ever did that to me in front of the crew, Captain or no Captain I'd knock him the fuck out right there on the spot.

Zack was completly unmotivated during work didn't take iniative when work and / or repairs showed up always tried to hide until someone else did it. Bill didn't want much and seriously planned to give his son a ship he only wanted him to show interest. Multiple seasons Zack barely or never checked the wheelhouse when time was free to ask his dad for advice regarding crab fishing. Those reasons listed above are the reason why Bill didn't offer Zack a new contract once he bought the Summer Bay.
