After Sig Hansens's ship the Northwestern catches fire and loses all power, he treks back to Dutch Harbour to install new equipment and resume his crab hunt as soon as possible.

if you have ever seen what an arc flash can do to a person you'd understand. Where I use to work the safety training included anyone turning on high power equiplment to do so whil cody and face were turned away from the switch because the dust in there was so bad

Building where I work has a 6in plastic wedge that you use when flipping the 440v main breaker.

If you've ever seen one explode, you wear protective gear and stand away from it. Even new breakers can malfunction. We had a 480/150A ABB breaker explode the 7th time it was switched - when it was finally being turned on for use, and there was _zero_ load on it. (the electricians were very unhappy about that, as it's a $750 breaker and it's up to them to get ABB to pay up.)

I was always warned to throw switches aside from the panel in case it blows. You don’t want to stand right in front if it explodes. I saw a AB breaker panel blow off in a sawmill it travelled a good 50 feet before it hit something that stopped it.

Can’t say this enough…..the Northwestern was so fortunate to have Edgar on board the day of the fire👍God was most definitely with you guys❤️🙏😞 And God remained with you through the 14 days so that your boat was repaired in a timely fashion, you had the funds to pay for repairs AND you returned to your pots full of crab….ALIVE. As a person whom has done emergency power and distribution for years I can't fathom it not having an ATS and there should be a synchronizing feature there that makes sure that ship power and shore power are completely in phase before it can be transfered. If not you get a situation called bucking phase where you damage all kind of components and total havoc will ensue. Pretty sure there was quite a bit of dramatic B/S put in there for the camera.

I’m just an apprentice marine mechanic.. but we’ve fired up generators while plugged into shore power without any such consideration for synchronization to the grid The boats I’ve been on have always had a switch on the panel You’re either pulling from one of the shore power plugs or from the internal supply Not possible to connect them together, at least not from anything I’ve ever seen Mostly just yachts though not commercial vessels

You can see in the video he cuts off the shore power before turning on the generator breaker I imagine if he had them both on it could be an issue I’m used to seeing a rotary switch that makes it impossible for generator and shore power to be connected

Even transfer switches can fail. I recall the one the power company installed between two 1.2MW generators... it did not sync before transferring; the entire transfer switch was instantly converted to slag.

@@jfbeam True, we had a company doing an upgrade to a 3K HP 1500 KW generator and they had been replacing switch gear and several other components. This had taken almost a month. The generator itself was housed in a separate building about 50' from the switch gear.They were ready to fire it up and make a test run so I was in the generator building and started it. Everything came up well on that end. They did some checking and said everything was good on their end so they wanted to do a simulation to make the generator sense that there was a loss of utility and transfer. They did and I went back in the generator building. Of course the generator was running full steam and I heard the ATS slam when it transfered. The generator groaned and then stopped dead in it tracks for a milisecond then attempted to turn backwards then I heard the switchgear drop out and the generator regained itself and was attempting to run right when I hit the emergency stop. This was 4160 volt. They had bucked phase. I went in and they were scratching their head and said they didn't understand why it hadn't synchronized before it transfered. but they didn't see any switches blown out of the cabinets. I told them they better worry about what it had done to that generator and engine. It had a 12' direct drive fan in the front with a 18" aluminum hub the blades set in like aircraft blades. It had cracked that hub luckily none of the blades had slung out. We had to pull the generator itself from the engine and it had stripped the splines in a 4" steel coupling. Other than that no damage. We really thought that it may had damaged the crankshaft in the engine but it hadn't.

One thing I will say about The northerstern sig has poured a lot of money into that boat taking damn good care of it and he does keep it maintained and Edgar has done a hell of a job as sigs mechanic all these years even back when Phil Harris was alive so Edgar knows the northerstern inside and out and I think Edgar should be that ships Captain if something ever were to happen to sig

After having a fire on the switchboard, with repairs taking a week, surely the USCG and Class Inspectors would have wanted to carry out a full test/check of every electrical operation, especially making sure the Emergency Generator kicked in after simulating loss of Main Generator power ???

Edgar is no longer on the Northwestern. Another Hansen, Norman is the engineer. Sig pretty much leaves him be. Two big incidents, he fell and had seizures. This e really had Sig shook up. The forward deck crane broke it's boom they had to go back to port for repair. or replacement
