Ukraine has 1500 tanks with over a thousand sitting in reserves. It's ridiculous to send redundant military weapons that will only cause more stress on the supply chains and maintenance crews. Ukraine has one of the largest mechanized army's in the world and guess what it's doing? Just sitting in the rear waiting for a break through.

From what I understand, the US has trained a few hundred Ukrainian tank crews and support personnel; about three months training. When US Army soldiers would get EIGHT months of training. Also, Ukraine does not operate any tank with a turbine engine, and to qualify to be an engine mechanic for the Abrams a US army recruit has to score in the 99th percentile on the ASVAB. THREE months of training; finding people smart enough to maintain them when Ukraine has taken 500,000 casualties and most men not yet drafted have fled the country. The Abrams' time on Ukraine's battlefield will be short and brutal.

Ukraine has several versions of the T-80 tank, both domestic and captured, that have a turbine engine. The technology is well known as turbines power most helicopters. The ASVAB has a mechanical maintenance component which requires the score of 99. That's a score not a percentile. The MM score may be lower than 99 when combined with scores of other components.

It's hard to say how well the heavier tank will cope in muddy wet conditions in Ukraine . I doubt the Abrams will see any front line advance leading work if it too wet . It's longer range accuracy will lend it to staying 4 to 6 kilometers behind the front but who knows what Ukraine will do , their tanks crews can be very aggressive . They might just drive the Abrams right down the Russian trenches as they have before . I am interested to see just how well the Abrams performs in the Ukrainian conditions . They say maintenance is an issue so that might change how they use them .

6km behind the front line.... In a tank.... No. Its got a great main gun but if you want to use them they are very much close to the front line. Like any tank, it will get stuck in thick sticky mud, it will be destroyed by AT mines. It's not a magic bullet.

Its always harder for invading forces to hold territory in modern warfare, because the population doesn't want them there and will keep resisting. Afghanistan is the perfect example of that EG: Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, NATO: War on terror although in the end the ruling Afghan government couldn't keep their army motivated because of corruption. Ukraine is different, the whole nation is motivated to survive and so survive they will.

Those tens of thousands of Russians can't just blend into the second largest country (landmass) in Europe and survive on a hunter-gatherer diet; large armed forces need large and unending modern supplies and modern LOGISTICS: ----- how to produce large quantities of water, foods, clothes, bullets, bombs, missiles, airplane, etc. AND how to them them to get to the front line, for those tens of thousands of troops.... to maintain their invasion/occupation. All of that require massive ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES. Russia, despite it being 11 time zones or roughly 80% of the lands of US and China combined --- they are the 3rd and 4th largest land-country on earth themselves, so Russia is unimaginably large and large lands require VERY SUBSTANTIAL military assets on all of its strategic borders/perimeters to protect it from all kinds of neighbors ---- Russia's economy is down to roughly 50% of the economy of the state of California. It is now cut off from SWIFT and roughly 98% of the Western world, the richest and most developed nations on earth. Sorry, but you/Russia can't win a war in Ukraine, when the latter is supplied by 32 of the world's MOST advanced and richest nations on earth. It's just a fool's errand Trump's "genius" friend, Comrade KGB Col. Putin has committed the Russians to.... it WILL RUIN the Russian people and their society, for decades to come.... I think that Ukrainian attritional strategy to destroy Russian military assets at a favorable ratio to the expenditure of Ukrainian resources will not pause in winter and will not require a dramatic breakthrough. But yes, there needs to be a way to disrupt Russian logistics through a deep battle approach, long range fires, denying Russians use of their airfields near the front, etc.

It's a good concept assuming they can be constantly supplied with armaments, however from what has been published, they are using more than anyone can supply, so will likely runout of artillery rounds before Russia are finished.

Why, because predictions of a quick Ukrainian advance through Russian lines didn't pan out. Russia has created massive fortifications of the kind that haven't been seen since WW I. And turned Ukraine into the most mined country on Earth. The fact that Ukrainian forces have advanced at all is amazing. And some of the most effective unit in the advance like the 82nd Air Assault Brigand are equipped with western tanks, IFVs and other systems.

First, the ground becomes solid for a long time through winter in ukraine allowing for operations to take place, and secondly, the winter doesnt suddenly cause tanks to melt. Dont pointlessly hassle ukraine into rushing their use just because journalists want to see them. They need to train within their own units and alongside infantry. Ideally any large operation with tanks needs weeks or even months of preparation, intelligence gathering, planning, misdirection and training with other arms, especially intergrating them with various different IFVs. The way ukraine AFU used the challengers 2s they were sent was impressive-very well hidden for gathering intel first and foremost and taking on high value targets from a distance. Basically like a scout sniper team for vehicles and fortifications. NATO also needs to hurry up sending F16s if they are going to, and not just in token amounts. If ukraine are given enough to get local air superiority, which is realistic, it will make a huge difference to a large tank operation, especially at night time. Europe (and others) could also look more into sending eurofighters. There are apparently 600 of them around the world and they have done a solid job as a multirole aircraft. They could send ones from current stocks and replace them with F35s/15s/16s for a knock off price perhaps, or make a deal that any aircraft bought and given to ukraine are returned after the war ends. If countrys weren't so pathetically reliant on private companies for weapons this wouldnt be half as complicated or expensive

Their engines are complicated and could cause huge logistical issues for Ukraine. I believe they are making some with standard (diesel rather than gas turbine) engines though. Not sure if that includes these initial 31 being sent now. With Poland using Abrams it means they can at least send them there for repairs and servicing but its still more complicated than is ideal. All NATO members should be sending more tanks IMO. They were basically originally bought to counter russian aggression, not fight shepherds, so get them used.

US supplied M1 Abrams tanks are unlikely to play a key role because we didn't give Ukraine enough of them (we gave them ~30). We also didn't give them Air Power. This joker talks about how to wage modern combined arms warfare when the Brits and US enjoyed complete air superiority since 1945. I agree though that its a shame that democratic nations didnt send more equipment of all types to Ukraine sooner; had they done so, this war might've been much nearer its end by now. I have to disagree completely, 90% of tanks destroyed were not by another tank, and despite M1 has the best armor vs. Soviet Tanks, they still will die vs. artilleries, mines, drones. It would be very bad mistake to think the M1 as a tank destroyer can change the tide easily.

Ukraine is at a disadvantage now because the territory they're looking to retake has been cleared of Ukrainian supporters so now it's an uphill fight, there are a lot of other factors but local partisan is extremely dangerous in finding out where the occupier is storing their supplies, this made the Russians retreat from Kherson city because the Ukrainians were basically allowing the Russian garrison to restock, find out where the supply depots were and hit them, rinse and repeat x 100 = nobody's going to be able to sustain that.

In my opinion the Russian army in Ukraine is going to collapse, sure they can introduce more conscripts but the amount of resources required and the strain on Russian resupply is going to be enormous during winter. Add Ukrainian long range strikes in the mix . Russia is a massive country with resources spread across thousands of miles , things are really not looking good for them. Actually no it isn't. You need to go look at the ballistic tables son. The 2A6 was FORCED to go to a longer gun to gain enough velocity to service targets that the M1 handles quite nicely with the shorter main gun. Everything about the Leopards gun is WORSE. Its heavier, its longer, the ammunition has to carry more propellant making them heavier and taking up more space. The M1 does the job with DU APFSDSRP that far out performs the German penetrator. Read a book, then come back. Tests have shown that the hole bored by a DU projectile is of a narrower diameter than for a similar tungsten projectile. Although both materials have nearly the same density, hardness, toughness, and strength, due to these differences in their deformation, depleted uranium tends to out-penetrate an equivalent length of tungsten alloy against steel targets.[6]

Actually it IS a wonder weapon. Its a wonder weapon because there are more in storage in the desert ready to go than in the entire British army tank parks. Its a wonder weapon because it has demonstrated that it can kill targets at great range, then maneuver RAPIDLY (something the Challenger can only do if its dropped out of an aircraft at 20k feet). It can service more targets, at longer ranges, drive faster, turn more quickly, and do it far longer. Even the Brits say the Abrahms is much easier to learn and operate. So there you are. The Situation is different. Ukraine is the defender and has an organized Army. The numbers are to few. But if you put these two companies in the right place at the right time they will maybe make a difference. And if you count all western tanks you have several battallions which do make a difference. The Abrams are just a small piece. Though we should give them way more equiipment, as their victory will keep Ivan off any funny ideas in eastern Europe.

@@Firefighter2539 I think you have missed the reality. Although Russia is the invader, it is now Russia's turn to fight a defensive war. The initial advance bought time for Russia to build layers of defensive lines, then the Russian troops retreated to allow the Ukrainian to advance up to within artillery range. That is why the Ukrainian counteroffensive has been so sticky compared to last year's campaign. Instead of having "funny ideas in eastern Europe", I think Russia cannot afford to have any "funny idea". Their best chance and only goal is to keep what they have already taken and make sure the Ukrainian will keep feeding their troops and western equipment to the meat grinder. So far Russia has been mainly throwing cold war stockpile of weapons. Wait and see the newer versions come to the battlefield, just like the old FAB500 they have converted to smart bombs - the accuracy is so much better. It will be a long war until on side has no more to pile in. On the other hand, whilst the frontline in Ukraine is designed to keep the western powers distracted, Russia's real effort and trophy is in Africa. It is another way to choke the west of precious resource. As we have seen in Germany, the renewal energy revolution still has a long way to go to be able to completely replace Russian gas, oil and nuclear power. Western Europe's purchase of Russian gas this year has exceeded all previous records, if you have been paying attention to the news. Whilst Russia has successfully rained in the Saudis to make peace with Iran and Syria, now Russia has also control the major African uranium producers. Russia and Belarus have long been dominating the global supply of fertilizer. Slowly, the western market will lose control of the price of raw material, energy and food - that, is Russia's real strategy.

The Russians are going to Stalingrad The Ukrainians in a pincer . They are going to allow them to penetrate and then envelop the Ukrainians , Little to no air cover is a hopeless battle . Whoever controls the skies , Controls the battlefield in this day in age . Resupply will be impossible . In a war of attrition , The Ukrainians are running out of cannon fodder and no amount of money will stave off the inevitable .. The Russians obviously want a warm water port and a corridor of resupply , So taking back the eastern sliver of Ukraine just isn't going to happen ,, Unless NATO starts fighting .. Then the missiles will fly and WWIII starts and ends in a day Instantaneous climate change .
