My uncle gone missing last Friday, today we got a message that had sneaked off to Ukraine (My father's family was Russian-Ukrainian descent) to fight the Belarusians and Russians. I don't know whether I should be worried or be proud of him. But I respected his decision. Edit 4 March 2022: He was detained by Ukrainian authorities for illegal entry from Polish border and also being suspected as a Russian saboteur. He was released 8:00 AM this morning and was last contacted heading to the city of Rivno and potentially Kyiv next. We also lost contact with him after the call.

As a former British army person with knowledge of how to use Soviet weapons and being close by in Poland and as a Russian speaker, it went through my mind that I might be of use. However whereas I am fitter than most people of my age (60) I am more likely just to get in the way and need support myself than to provide effective combat use. On the other hand, what I would urge people to do is to look to the skills they have and how they might be applied in obvious military fields such as medical but also less obvious ones such as being a mechanic or driver or something like that. It takes a while to train to be a soldier, it occured to me yesterday that most people probably can't even read a map being so used to letting their telephones do it for them. Maybe there are people in my position who could do with a refresher course and then train others, but the logical place to do that would be in the UK and not on the ground in Ukraine.

I would go . I’m not trained but a life long rifle shooter/ hunter I have a lot of thermal equipment and real world experience of its use . I’m 45 fit and well and financially able to go for a few months . I suspect by the time I’m there it will have turned in to bombs on cities type war and I would just be someone else to evacuate.
