Ukraine invasion: The Brits volunteering to go to Ukraine and fight the Russians

My uncle gone missing last Friday, today we got a message that had sneaked off to Ukraine (My father's family was Russian-Ukrainian descent) to fight the Belarusians and Russians. I don't know whether I should be worried or be proud of him. But I respected his decision. Edit 4 March 2022: He was detained by Ukrainian authorities for illegal entry from Polish border and also being suspected as a Russian saboteur. He was released 8:00 AM this morning and was last contacted heading to the city of Rivno and potentially Kyiv next. We also lost contact with him after the call.

Being from a russian bordering NATO country all the support for Ukraine is really surprising me. I've often wondered how big the popular support from western EU would be in case of war, seeing all the news in the past few days of western world coming together to fight for freedom of another country is fantastic. I just got to poland last night with 10 other us combat veterans. Were about to hop a ukrainian humvee from the poland border and make the push to Lviv. We have 30 years of combat experience together. We hopped a cargo plane from a private airport in the US. Thank God we were able to bring our combat equipment and AR 15s with us and we have over 1,000 rounds of ammo each. We even brought night vision scopes and a few 30.06 rifles. Were ready to rock and roll in a few hours. Just getting a trailer full of supplies ready to tow with us. Got an interpreter with us...were also bringing a crap load of MREs with us. Please pray that we dont get hit by artillery fire. GOD Bless..

As a former British army person with knowledge of how to use Soviet weapons and being close by in Poland and as a Russian speaker, it went through my mind that I might be of use. However whereas I am fitter than most people of my age (60) I am more likely just to get in the way and need support myself than to provide effective combat use. On the other hand, what I would urge people to do is to look to the skills they have and how they might be applied in obvious military fields such as medical but also less obvious ones such as being a mechanic or driver or something like that. It takes a while to train to be a soldier, it occured to me yesterday that most people probably can't even read a map being so used to letting their telephones do it for them. Maybe there are people in my position who could do with a refresher course and then train others, but the logical place to do that would be in the UK and not on the ground in Ukraine.
