Family secretly film life in Russian-occupied Ukraine - BBC News

Russia is scrambling to pull its military personnel and citizens out of the city of Kherson ahead of a Ukrainian counter-offensive.
Ukrainian father Dmytro Bahnenko reflects on the months he and his family lived there under occupation and secretly filmed for BBC Eye at great personal risk.
Dmytro, whose day job had been as a local reporter, never thought he'd be filming the invasion of his home city.
Along with his wife Lidia, Dmytro struggles to shelter their five-year-old daughter Ksusha from the war as she increasingly senses the danger around her.
Kherson was the first major city to fall to Russian forces when they invaded Ukraine in February and he began filming the family's lives when Russian soldiers first marched past their window on 1 March.

As a melitopolian, I can approve that seeing the first ukrainian checkpoint with blue-and-yellow flags on the road from an occupation is comparable to the first rays of sun that meet you when you dig yourself up from under the ground being burried alive. I am from Hong Kong, having been through all the nonsense stemming from oppression from China, I feel sad to see what the Ukrainians are going through. I feel angry seeing how the Russian Army is invading Ukraine, and shutting down peaceful protests. We must stand together and fight against dictatorship for the rest of our lives. Slava Ukraini!!!!

A year ago i took a refugee from the Cherson region in my house. She told me many things. I could see the fear in her eyes. Since that moment i have set up and managed a refugee centre with 14 people. And i still have a Ukranian mother and her little daughter in my home. I see and feel their struggle every day. I see the pain in their eyes. But they can not talk about everything. They are emotionally blocked. This video makes it so concrete and vivid.... Heart breaking.

There was practically no shelling in Kherson, since this city was taken in the spring without a fight. The shelling of Kherson began from the moment the Ukrainian troops approached it. They didn't tell you whose shells are exploding off-screen, but you don't think about it. The Russians do not need to shoot at the city, which is in their rear. That's how propaganda works.

And I know that this is not the first time this is happening, our history is filled with stories like this- my family had stories like this in the past. I hope that one day when the war is over people will learn about these stories and all the people who are responsible for this will be held accountable and treated like they deserve to be.

When his daughter asked for her dinosaur it really hit me that there are children who can't fully process what's going on and are stuck in this horrible situation. I hope they survive the war and the trauma.

This is so heartbreaking😢 Stay strong Ukraine, you will win!❤️❤️ I can totally understand the guy when he says he doesn’t want to speak Russian. I’m not Ukrainian but I feel the same, Russian is my second language, but since the war started I don’t want to speak this language.

My mother grew up in Hungary during WW2. She spoke of planes flying overhead while she walked through the fields of her small hometown farming community, bullets sometimes flying around her. Often, she'd wave at the pilots to let them know she's just an innocent little kid, and sometimes, they'd wave back. When the Russians were coming, an American convoy came through her town to retrieve any Americans. My mom was born in NY, USA, but lived with her grandmother to grow up in Hungary, like her own mother. The entire family was split up due to the war. They managed to leave Europe on a ship bound for the United States, but not before her father was murdered. PTSD didn't hit her until years later. I am a child who grew up while she suffered from it. I saw the light slowly go out of her eyes in the throes of the memories she could never erase. This is the despicable outcome of war waged by selfish men who lust for power without conscience. It destroys generations of good people who just want to live their lives in peace with the love of their families around them. Who will be strong enough to say we make war no more forever?!?!

...I have two conflicting story from two family members living in the opposite parts what's now Slovakia. One living west (near Bratislava the capital) said that when Germans occupied their small village, they were polite and civilised. When they heard that Russians are pushing the front, they told the family "Hide daughters and valuables!" When Russian soldiers came it was a disaster. They relieved themselves in the house, they WERE asking for girls and valuables. My aunt's sister were in a pig pen for 2 days until this "liberating" bunch left. The other story is from the eastern part of Slovakia a walking distance from what used to be part of Czechoslovakia, after WW2 it became Ukraine suddenly. Germans past and Russians past. Russian soldiers wanted to take a cow away along with some valuable items, kill the chickens and grandma begged them that she needs to feed her son. When someone shot the office of that 'liberating' bunch, soldiers scattered and were not seen after that. People said that Germans were bad guys during the war, well, local stories beg the difference in that account. So we have to evaluate EVERYTHING what being rammed down our matrix media. If you were not there and if you do not have a person that you personally know YOU JUST DON'T KNOW! I have friends who's family members are in Ukraine and they tell different stories as well. It is popular to say bad Russians. But can you justify the NATO's expansion and atrocities it left behind!? Why there was a suddenly war in former Yugoslavia while up until then EVERYONE there lived peacefully? Why did "Velvet Revolution" happened in Czechoslovakia? It was organised take down of whatever was left of civilised and peaceful countries of Europe. Once you clump different countries under one 'governance' body you can control them all more efficiently. And the leaders have sold their native lands to the powers to be, we all can read between the lines....Pray to the Most High, King of Kings. Without mentioning His name EVERYONE knows who that is.

Our PM is doing more than any other PM in the world to help countries in humanitarian crisis. Be it vaccines or food supplies, UN Peacekeepers or affordable satellite launches, India is helping the world in ways no Western country can even think of. Which country are you from that you got so much hate against Modi? Cuz I'm sure the western media propaganda has gotten to you, there's no other reason.

@chaosXpert that's what you think as an outsider and a naive person. Perhaps you should check the official websites to gather data on how much oil Italy, Netherlands etc are importing vs how much India is.. there ain't no comparison. Moreover, talk of Indians laughing at Ukrainians? My comment on this video is definitely opposed to your idea of hate. When USA and UK loaded up our neighbours, Pakisthan to wage terrorism and wars against India, that must be forgotten? You do not know the history. Ukraine always stood with Pakistan when it came to our International border disputes. Even then MOST Indians are sympathetic towards Ukraine and not Russia. But you have the right to hate, you do that. You know, haters will hate. But my job isn't to police you that India is great. We all know India is great and for the last 400 years Western countries have only and only raided India of its wealth and dignity. Now if we appear poor to you, let's not blame Indian PM for that.
