So let me get this straight. Your units are stretched thin on the frontline. You cannot spare air defence to major cities, you lost military infrastructure, electricity, airfields clay, key towns and fortifications to the Russians. But you launch a new offensive hoping to capture clay and stretch your forces thinner in an offensive you cannot afford to lose. Meanwhile, you expect the Russians to take troops from Toretsk & Pokrovks direction to Kursk while they have 50,000 personnel up there in reserve. What a smart move.

Russian lies. Virtually no effective defence has been launched by Russian military, where two defence lines have been breached. Virtually no Russian support forces have yet been mobilised from nearby front lines where the only replacements for Russian troops are to be found. Western allies have essentially agreed that more advanced weaponry CAN be deployed cross-border and will do so in increasing amounts as it becomes available.

Russia dedicated 5 brigades to retake the area. That's around 30k soldiers. That's along spetznat forces that are already there. Also Wagner forces were recalled from Africa to assist in counter offensive.

Suppose it a "prestige" issue - and temporary it's impressive. However on this long front it is possible to concentrate some top elite troops and break through for some days. I suppose in a week all is over and Ukraine is much weaker then before.
