Let’s not mistake Switzerlands neutrality with pasifism. One of the big reasons coutries are dragged into wars is because side A sees that side B can coerse or straight up invade the neutral country to meet their goals. So, side A’s best interest is to deliver an equal ultimatum to the neutral country, offering to help in the defence against side B’s potential invasion. At best, the neutral nation gets to choose a side to fight with, but once both A and B see the opposing side is likely interested in making a move, they both likely benefit from going down the path that makes it inevitable. Switzerlands solution to this dilemma is to refuse side A’s offer of help, and remind side B that they can blow out every tunnel and bridge in the nation in hours, and every village is armed and trained to resist any attempts to rebuild or replace those bridges. Any invasion would need to move troops largely through have to move troops by air, where they will be hunted down by fifth generation fighters. Side A and B can now agree that neither side benefits from fucking with Switzerland, so neither side needs to anticipate or counter the other sides attempts to do so. In some sense Switzerland is a side in every european war - but instead of fighting their goal is staring down anyone who dares to even consider starting shit with them.

Nobody suspected that the Russian way of waging war, with tons of equipment of almost mediocre quality and the sacrifice of around 1,000 soldiers per day, could lead to lasting success. The F35 is ridiculously expensive, because the ones in charge didn't have a fundamental grasp of engineering. Effective military aircraft are very specialized, but they originally wanted the same plane to have the strong (heavy) frame & other hardware for CATOBAR (US Navy aircraft carriers), the long range (light weight, high fuel capacity) land-based Air Force needs, & STOVL (Short Take Off & Vertical Landing) for everybody else's Carriers - those need a big, heavy duty fan in the middle of everything. After many years & billions of dollars development cost, they finally gave up & made 3 variants, but maximum interoperability means there are STILL compromises. Oh, & in order to store all the ordinance inside for better stealth, they had to design special new bombs & missiles just for this plane. 🙃

Switzerland buying F-35A isn't that strange imo. We have Legacy hornets that are showing their age, and just like the rest of the world, theres always a threat Russia might try something funny. As much as we are neutral we have also heavily sanctioned Russian bank accounts, and are not exactly in favour with the Russians anymore. Interoperability has always been a key point for the swiss air force, that being one of the factors on deciding to import our Vehicles. We also have training exercises with the US and other NATO members occasionally.

switzerland will have to remortgage the country just to keep a fail-35 in the air for an hour lol The Fail-35 continued to falter in very public ways. In 2015, it performed poorly in a dogfight against older F-16s. Its engine, made by subcontractor Pratt & Whitney, burned so hot that it turned atmospheric sand and grit into glass inside the plane, hurting performance and requiring redesigns. And yet, as new capabilities were added to the Fail-35, it became apparent that the engine wasn’t powerful enough to provide energy to cool the plane’s internal systems. Maybe most frustrating, the Fail-35 required several million lines of software code to operate. That code, like all code, turned out to be buggy and in need of constant rewriting. By 2021, the cost of the Fail-35 had nearly doubled-overall outlays for the project, originally estimated at $233 billion for the first 20 years, had in fact reached $416 billion. I thought the swiss were smarter than this...obviously i was wrong.
@antoniohagopian2135 ай бұрын
@@nihilistzero8066don't forget that all fail-35 aren't even "production models" and the so called "production model" block 4 is SUPPOSED to be a thing only in 2030. And all previous planes CANNOT get updated to this spec because the original design is quite old and didn't take into consideration so many changes. It also has the same radar issue of the f16, nose is too small to fit a bigger radar, not enough power to make even the smaller radar work properly, and not enough cooling to keep that radar in good condition.
@kaptainkaos12025 ай бұрын
@@nihilistzero8066 first of all the F-35 was never meant to dogfight with an opponent. That the F-16 bested it in visual range 1v1 fighting is not surprising. The goal of the aircraft is get close UNOBSERVED and deliver its weapons load. Not even going to argue the electrical power aspect with you because you’re just wrong. How do I know? I’m one of a handful of EWIS experts for the military and my colleagues and I helped guide the development of power supply on the aircraft. Don’t believe me? Look for some of my other posts and they are all indicative of an EWIS expert. Your qualifications? Much as the world would love to be like Costa Rica, the saying "those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it," is ever prevalent. If you have a sound and reasonable strategy/idea that has not just NATO, but all nation's militaries dissolve without repercussion, then you'd have a Nobel by now. But you don't, because there is none. Ukraine wanted no war with Russia, but Russia brought war to Ukraine. Finland didn't become a nation built around fending off Russia because of paranoia. They built their country based on their history with Russia. Poland isn't buying NATO and Korean military equipment because they trust Russia, but because they don't. Taiwan hasn't acknowledged the CCP as their government without reason. They've only acknowledged them as a threat to the people of Taiwan. The Philippines isn't asking for US assistance in the contested sea between them and China for no reason, but because China is being aggressive to the Philippines. Japan doesn't have a US naval base in Okinawa because they're being forced by the US, but because they're pressured by China. And the other thing to note from history, "he, who wishes for peace, must prepare for war". All we can hope is that Putin is not an idiot who will drag the world into another war (or into annihilation) because the less-tyrannical countries don't want him to rule.
