This isn't just a war for Ukraine but for the EU as well. If the EU gives up on Ukraine at this stage it will be damaged beyond repair and likely collapse. I mean what is the EU worth if all it's words are hollow and it won't actually stick to it's promises? At the same time if the war ends in favour to Ukraine and Ukraine manages to join the EU (Via the proper process, we shouldn't make exceptions for them) the EU will gain an enormous amount of legitimacy as a global force to be respected and one that is not to be trifled with as they will stick to their word. It will also make Orban nervous as it means the promises of democracy and freedom of the EU are real and that he will suffer if he oppresses his people.

What do you think Ukraine would have done if Kiev was lost in 3 days? Or if they weren't helped by other countries? Besides, you shouldn't underestimate French Resistance that fought until the end of the war (my grandfather was part of it, and was shot in 1944).

The French resistance spent most of its time fighting each other and its role has been heavily exaggerated by De Gaulle. My ex girlfriend’s grandmother was also in the French resistance. Half of her stories were about fighting other resistance cells. I can’t say if Ukraine would’ve surrendered had they lost Kyiv because they didn’t and didn’t surrender to them. My guess is Ukrainians would’ve become partisans like in Poland during the Second World War. Unlike Ukraine, France had a whole ass colonial empire and gave into people who would’ve appeased Hitler a year earlier. Et oui je parle un peu français. Ma tante habite a Paris.
