I keep thinking about that Ukrainian woman giving sunflower seeds at a Russian soldier telling him to put in his pocket so that they could grow when he fell on the ground. This was at the start. How profettic that statement was. Who would have said that she was right in her confidence about how the Ukrainian army would perform

I pinpoint that as the moment Ukraine won the war. Putin's objective was to be welcomed by the Ukranians on his way to overthrowing the government. Then he could have dictated all his conditions to Ukraine: a puppet government, loss of territory, loss of sovereignty either outright or via some sort of made up federation. When Ukranians reject the invaders, rally up to their (before the war reasonably unpopular) government, rally up to their armed forces there was nothing that could be done. Russia could even conquer Lviv, go all the way to the polish border but even that was just a delay to an eventual defeat.

This is my concern. So what if Ukraine wins all these battles and the special operation. What's to stop Russia from invading 2 years from now? There's no end if they feel NATO is at their border, whether this is a real fear or pretense. It's an open loop without a negotiated settlement of some type. Unfortunately, the Russian way is bullying, taking, then trying to negotiate with blood on their fangs.

I've known this for over 42 years. The Russian Military has never put much emphasis on Logistics and support. Without quality control and quality support this is exactly what you are seeing happening right now in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian Army has been taught by the west many things however without the heart and spirit of the Ukrainian warrior and its people, this could have turned out in a very bad way for them.

People laughed at America when they lost Afghanistan forget to realize that the Afghan's them self's collapsed. They were given Billions and over 20 years of military training, support and economic aid but they chose tribalism, the Taliban and defeat over peace and security. Ukraine's have shown the true power of just listening to NATO's advice and with their huge morale, willingness to fight and lack of fear they are NATO's perfect army to crush the Russian army.

True Russian logistics were poor anyway but in Kherson the Ukranians have made it far worse by targetting the bridges and the pontoon ferries that the Russians have been using to get supplies across the Dnipro. The Russian 'genius' who reinforced the Kherson (city) side of the Dnipro without secure communications probably missed that class at staff college.

They haven't really collapsed. They weren't there in the first place in the amounts needed. This whole show has been poorly planned by the Russians. Maybe they just expected the Ukrainians to surrender at the sight of all the tanks and Russian troops? That went well. Remember, Putin said right at the start that he expected this to last just a few days. We know now that he over-estimated the capability of his armed forces by a factor of around 50.

No it wasn`t. The Russian Army under Tsar Nicholas 2 was an even worse paper tiger than the current one. About 1.7 MILLION Imperial "soldiers" became charred, mangled, dismembered, and bullet riddled corpses under the German and Austrian weaponry. Many were sent to the front line with no weapons, food, or even winter clothing, effectively turning many of them into cannon fodder. This led to the collapse of the Tsarist monarchy and the death of Nicholas 2 and his wife and children even as what was left of Imperial Russia began disintegrating into an EVIL Civil War that killed more than 15 million people, completely exterminated the entire political structure and economy and society, and left the Bolsheviks ruling over what became a huge dead pile of debris, destroyed communities, and piles of dead bodies.

When this war ends Ukraine is going to want rather harsh terms and justifiably so. The caution though is that excessive terms can lead to another Hitler, like the terms of WWI did. So we need to keep the Russian economy and military in check after this war. But we need to also permit Russians to be able to make a decent living and not try to completely humiliate them. Is it truly surprising, though? For such a weirdly storied army, the fact of the matter is that, historically speaking, Russia has never managed to maintain a truly strong and competent military for any real duration, they're constantly having some debacle against some foreign force, it's why they're so paranoid about invasions in an age where wars of territorial conquest are clearly at an end. If it wasn't the Mongols and the Golden Horde, it was the Teutonic Knights, or the Swedes, or the Poles/Lithuanians, or the Turks, or the Prussians, or the armies of Revolutionary France, or the Japanese navy, or (hahaha) Finnish farmers, the Germans and their Austrian Mini-Mes, or of course the Afghans, etc., etc.. They've had spans of years or perhaps a few decades where they've acquitted themselves well, but somehow they always seem to eventually revert to garbage status sooner or later and have to start over. It's an army made largely of conscripts taken against their will and sourced from a brutal society comprised of individuals with the collective mindset of a beaten dog that, absent the threat of some truly horrific invader, is _always_ going to suffer from serious morale problems and poor esprit de corps.

@@drmwpn This. Corruption permeates every layer, every sphere of human activity, including the military. It's a problem which is centuries-old. Tolstoy writes about corruption in the Crimean War. It is hard to describe the immediate brutality to a Westerner who hasn't lived there.

What do russian soldiers say when they are blown up, and their bodies fly off earth and past the moon? They say HI MARS.

I was in the U.S. Marines nearly 60 years ago and we genuinely feared that the USSR would steamroll through Europe. All of this has been a welcome shock. In retrospect we should have realized that nothing in the USSR or Russia functions as it should. Their logistics in particular appear to be horrible. It seems everyone has been more intent on stealing than working.

In your time it was a possibility but surely new technologies in artillery and airpower have changed that. Numbers dont matter as much as they did before i suppose?

The SAD thing here is that 75 years ago RUSSIA was terrified that PATTON was going to steamroll right to Moscow. And back then WE had the ONLY nukes on this planet. People don't realize what that really meant, but we were the ONLY people since the beginning of time that actually COULD have owned the whole world. All we had to do is tell EVERYONE, lay down all your arms and disband armies or your CITIES won't exist. But we believed in Freedom for all and still do. Thank god Russia or Germany didn't get that bomb 1st todays world would be unrecognizable. Patton was RIGHT about Russia though we should have disarmed them FOR GOOD and then set them free to choose leaders with NO TEETH.

Can the news get any better !! Been here every day sonce Feb 24, through all the dark days of March, to hear UA intel say in 1st week of April, this counter offensive would start in August. So gratifying to see the enormous western support, UA ferocity, incredible intel and logistics, and the sacrifices of the people of Uklraine. Great to see the smiles on the analysts faces too !!
