Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022, has been characterized by a flagrant disregard for civilian life and frequent war crimes. Ukraine, where people over 60 years old make up nearly one-fourth of the population, is one of the “oldest” countries in the world. Often reluctant or unable to flee their homes, older people appear to make up a disproportionate number of civilians remaining in areas of active hostilities, and as a result, they face a greater likelihood of being killed or injured. A new Amnesty International report shows how intersecting challenges, from disability to poverty to age discrimination, are compounded in emergency situations, putting older people at heightened risk.

Amnesty International should view the comment section here on YT of how much Russian invasion supporters are grateful and gleeful for AIs article asserting that Ukrainian civilians are hurt because Ukraine isn’t doing “enough” (while fighting for its existence against a 10x larger invader). And AI wrote that without even bothering to talk to its Ukrainian chapters. How could AI do that? Just nonsensical, and if AI criticizes Ukraine for Russians shelling, raping or torturing Ukrainians, they must equally blame themselves for Ukrainian civilians suffering…..AI is (supposedly) an organization to help civilians, and if civilians suffer, it is on AI for not doing “enough.” (Or at least, that is AIs “logic”). Me personally, I think the person who commits the crime is the perpetrator ….not the victim, not the police who tried to stop them, not the victims family, and find AIs Russia support incomprehensible. As a prior donor to AI….never again.
