You should have asked him what he meant by "everything depends on how much support we receive from the West" because I can tell you that he has something very specific in mind that is urgently needed and our leaders are not supplying: armored vehicles (IFVs & battle tanks) and aircraft. Citizens of Western democracies should pressure our leaders to supply these things, because THAT is how we avoid escalation. If we don't give the UA what it needs to succeed on the battlefield, we will have to do the fighting for them. That's what misguided, confused timid indecisiveness produces. Right, I live in Georgia and yes some Russians are against this war but many are not. FSB agents are here as well as people who glorify Russia. I have seen Z symbols on maps of Ukraine and z markings in parts of the country. Plus the behaviour of some makes it difficult to feel sympathy.
