I have largely retreated from the information space. No more social media for me except for U-tube. I just find it all crap. Perhaps it's because I'm old and disillusioned with humanity. Yeah, it was all very exciting at first but now the over-commercialization and susceptibility to hostile misinformation and algorithms ruins it. And of course our education systems are barely able to churn out people with media literacy skills capable of protecting themselves from it all...

Some years ago, the Syrian War blog at The Guardian was taken over by trolls, and (almost) no one got it, starting with the moderators/editors. Right after the articles were published, fiery anti-Western, pro-Assad (or pro-Russian, in time) posts would come up, and would get 300 likes instantly, 10 times over the average, And that went on for months and months. Even after they started including only Russian or RU-sympathetic links. Back then the thing was fully professional, and no one sounded the alarm.

The problem with libel and slander laws is that the burden of proof is on the person lied about, and if they are wealthy that is not a problem; but many people cannot afford to fight libelous and slanderous statements... Your quest for truth is very important and appreciated.

Hi Team. I saw an interview the other day on MSNBC with British photojournalist Platon Anoniou.(photog) He talked about the time he met Putin in 2007 in russia. He asked Putin for fun if he liked the Beatles. Putin replied in perfect English" I love The Beatles,'” He then asked him in fun if his favorite song was Back In The USSR and Putin stared at him coldly and said no my favorite song is Yesterday. Meaning the Yesterday of the Soviet Union. Putin is obsessed with rebuilding the Soviet Union...............he is not going to stop until he is made to stop. It's great that the US has finally sent the aid package. But right now, is the time to get the next package ready to go. Right now! I'm back to writing letters..............

They are similar. Traditionally the colours of the embroidery threads, the patterns and symbols created with the embroidery, and the type of stitches used were specific to oblasts and even villages within oblasts. The traditional shirt would have been unbleached and undyed linen so the colours of the modern shirt have less significance.

Disinformation is the political tool of our time. Everyone consumes and relies on it in some form / fashion to reinforce their interpretation of reality. I think the greatest danger with disinformation lies in how it is combatted. The idea of going through and telling others what is right / wrong or true / false is a sure path to authoritarianism. I think the best way to combat it is to create an environment that is so wonderful / loving / successful that the “truth” is self evident / interpreted nearly universally. Heroyam slava.

Wow, I sent you the link as a joke since I could finally (not that I was looking for a reason) use a quote of yours on a tech website. The original text is in Dutch, so there is some repetition, but it's funny to see that my translation skills revert back to English almost the same as the original quote. I love the comment section of Tweakers because it allows linking to sources, which is not possible here on KZbin. I agree 100% with your comment about flat earth, and I thought about changing that, but due to time constraints and how the comment section on that site works, I kept it out. (Posts can be scored from -1 to +3 based on content and reasoning. A post on flat earth would be moderated, by the community of registered users/peers itself, and likely scored as a -1 (flamebait/troll) or 0 (irrelevant) and thus sorted/labelled accordingly. You can see, for example, that my comment is currently scored as +3 (spotlight) and got a greener background. The moderation is done on content and not with likes or thumbs up or if you agree with it or not (although the system is not flawless its waaaay better than many other comment sections on other sites.)

I think the talk about crime statistics arose from talks about how not every US state reports crime statistics to the FBI, but the FBI still estimate the crime rates of those stated and use them in their statistics. If that is true, it's easy to see why people might be sceptical of the statistics as they would be easy to manipulate.

The Policy Paper on Foreign influence in the UK is to target this subject. Any UK national can be given 14 years in jail for looking to influence public opinion through social media. Foreign interference will target malign activity carried out for, or on behalf of, or intended to benefit, a foreign power. Foreign interference is intended to sow discord, manipulate public discourse, discredit the political system, bias the development of policy, and undermine the safety or interests of the UK. A foreign state could seek to manipulate whether or how someone participates in an electoral event, for example through state-sponsored disinformation campaigns This offence will capture state backed disinformation and information operations, through the foreign power link, intended effect and where there is a misrepresentation either of a person’s identity or in the presentation of the information.

About the mere exposure effect.. isn't that just the basis for every form of political messaging? Regardless of truth or misinformation? As an example from during the formation process of the current Dutch government; when the four associated parties decided to opt for an extra-parliamentary solution that requires ministers from outside of the coalition parties to seek broad support among opposition parties in order to avoid a situation where the coalition could enforce an absolute majority vote on almost every major issue (despite internal disagreements) and any interactions with the opposition would be little more than theatre (which was a concern because that is what's been happening under Mark Rutte for about 15 years), the largest parties outside of those four did not welcome the idea of a chance of serious involvement in policy making and constructive opposition at all. Instead, they repeated in the media (news articles, broadcasts and talk shows on all the mainstream channels) over and over that nobody really knew what an extra-parliamentary solution meant (despite very clear explanation on multiple occasions), that under no circumstances would they allow members of their own parties appointed as ministers in such a cabinet, and that the whole attempt was just a farce. The reason? Because they wanted to do everything they could to thwart any attempt of the formation of a government in which the PVV took any part. None of them ever explained why it would be a bad idea. They just repeated it and it became an accepted 'truth.' In a broader sense, most of the widespread views of today's liberal world order didn't become the accepted norm because everyone suddenly had an epiphany and knew they were the right thing, or because they came to a realization of their own accord. These views came into prevalence because related social commentary was repeated over and over and it was gradually normalized in everyone's minds.

There're also corrections in mainstream media not being sufficient. I'd advocate something like having to spend the same real estate for the correction as was used for the original story, not only that, because disinformation spreads faster and more easily the correction might have to be run over multiple days. I constantly forget that people so often are just sheeple. I also don't particularly hold on to particular world views willingly casting them aside if new information comes along that seems to have reasonable basis so that people. I should make a point of commenting more and not just liking the video to help game the system. Really KZbin should do a lot of things around comments but don't so we should take advantage of them as we can to get these messages as far and wide as we can

One option, sort of like the blue tick, but democratized, is that different organizations or curators can pay to get their own tick type which represents their editorial curation. When you search for content, you can choose ticktypes that you want to give preference to. Curators of those ticks, the "Thomas Theiner Tick" or the "ATP Geopoletics Tick" at a small level, but designed for larger groups "NRA" or "NAFO" with publically stated values who will take time to just curate things like they do likes or retweets and tag it. It opens the door for individual creators, sub aggregators and aggregators to all be in a network of trusted relationships, based on interests and trust. The social media network just needs to let people choose who they trust and to have each checkmark coincide with an identifiable curatorial organization.

If you look at this piece from 10 years ago where Christiane Amanpour tears into Professor Stephen Cohen, who is obviously spewing Russian talking points about the "right-wing radical nationalists" in Ukraine & Crimea, it (mostly) puts things into perspective on how we got here. FYI: this recording went back to default to 480 resolution instead of using user preference. Looks like YT has reset your defaults again. That comment about soviet/russian media attack represents their dedication to spreading their bile through the world. The "commies" back in the earlie 1900's decided they were the "salvation of the world" and they had to spread that "salvation". For them it is a religious war. They are zealots. The "west", is lazy, has no such dedication. They have adapted with the times, learning and using the new media to fight their war, to spread their religion.

Great vlog as usual. When it comes to fiction, a set of ideas that make sense can be gloriously entertaining. I suspect though that some people, who have not read a lot of fiction, when they come across a set of ideas that make sense, respond with 'well that makes sense', not understanding that these ideas can exist in the absence of fact. You take a story here and an anecdote there, string them together and before you know it, you can dehumanise a whole minority of people. I think the people I know, who fall for what is in effect poison speech, are vulnerable to the poison because they are already suffering from a level of dehumanisation. Monolithic bureaucracies give them b.s.. The ansaphone says it's sorry, there's an unusually high number of calls today. The decision tree once you do get through to a voice does not include any option for your query. The tobacco industry and the oil industry suppress scientific study as does farming and fishing. Nuclear power claims to be more infallible than the pope. Pharmaceutical companies are accused of not publishing papers. It's too expensive to talk about sewage or question the notion that money is for money and not for work. There is corporate greenwash and if you are in a particluarly dark mood, lies wherever you look. With luck the downfall of Putin will lead to a crash of the disinformation economy, but as your video explains, the troll farms simply add fuel to already existing fires. Democracy allows for the truth that people make mistakes, whereas Autocracy holds grimly to the lie that there are people who do not make mistakes. Democracy (ideally) encourages nourishing discourse, problem solving, inclusivity and education. Autocracy holds that the bigoted idiot at the back of the pub has the right to shout everyone down and spread poison. The only way I can understand the current rise of the bigoted idiot is not because of their bigotry or idiocy but because they are an expression of the despair that too many people feel.

Because it was a steep learning curve I joined over 50 different public forums to get specific information about stuff that I have no experience with . Now the scary bit is each & every one of them was heavily infiltrated by russian ( or at least anti-Biden , pro-trump ) trolls . I play with British motorcycles so again that has me on 18 motorcycle forums and again every one of them is heavily infiltrated by trolls . A few years back I thought they were just misinformed idiots but since subscribing to a lot of YT channels it has become apparent that they are in fact paid trolls . I started noticing just how many slip in propaganda into a post like "Biden induced fuel prices " or "communist union leaders" or "because the Biden economy is so bad I can only afford a $ 2,000 mower" and the majority of their posts are just a rehash of previously "liked" posts because the poster has no idea about the subject matter . On several forums there are only a dozen or so Australians and I quickly realised that I was the only actual real Australian & all the others were fake and when I looked at their posts it became apparent that they had no knowledge of the forum subject matter so I started to ask moderators to remove them, only to find even some of the moderators were also trolls . And these little insidious side comments sink in so despite the US economy going gang busters just about every US mower forum has the overt view that every one is broke & the economy is in tatters , the fact that the posters ( if they are real ) has possibly over extended themselves by buying their 20 acre "dream" estate is always overlooked and if mentioned get a mile of vitriol from trolls & real people alike . And to bring it back to the war footing, Stihl closed down a US factory and this is all Zelensky's fault , not the fault of the russians who bombed the factory to dust .Honda has just closed a mower factory and again it gets blamed on the Ukrainian war when in reality is falling sales because Americans will not pay a fair price for a high quality mower so the factory is going from mowers to ATV's . No American seems to be able to understand that the USA exports more fuel & oil than it imports .

Plus que selon les estimations 46500 infanteries en 5 jours hummm vive les mathématiques ! Combien de temps a cette vitesse cela va t-il durer petit problème de mathématique allez au tableau !

An honest liar is a good watch. Off topic in a way, i know... it is about James Randi who publicly exposed psychics, faith healers, and con-artists.... But it does make it very clear that a lot of people should be protected from false information.

@ATPGeo --- While all this discussion of disinformation from the propagation end is useful, what about the receiving end? You're non troll followers are not taken in by this stuff. Why did 74 million adults vote for Trump in 2016? Why is there such receptivity?

When it comes to propaganda of extreme movements, in Germany it is illegal and a punishable crime to deny the 'Holocaust or painting aspects of the 'Nazis positiv. In general as long as you don't do a critical analysis of 'Nazi stuff you can be punished for it. This was put into power by the strictly conservative government shortly after the war, it was not a left idea, but a conservative one - and there is consensus about it throughout the democratic political spectrum since then. It takes some freedom, in this case it is proven that this ideology and its propagandist are responsible for the deaths of 50 millions (if you count in the Second world War which would not have started without them). In recorded human history that is the Worst so far documented. That's right-wings have difficulties in getting a long-term foothold in Germany, they usually disqualify themselves and get abandoned by society and dismantled by the law if there is enough evidence of their ideology being 'Nazi or close to it. For any politician in Germany it is a bad idea to take phrases related to this horror government and its political figures in a public speech, especially comparing political figures directly EXCEPT when those figures really use words and phrases of this horror government in a public context indirect enough to get away with it. We have one guy named Hoecke, who is using SA phrases that are not commonly known and get's away with it - but is on the other side labeled accordingly, and due to the recorded evidence correctly. Unlike other members of his party who are being exposed as having close relations to russia or China (that why I interpret that party AfD as 'Alternative for Dictatorships' these days) I have the feeling that Hoecke is a true believer in the Horror-German Ideology of 'National 'Socialism.

Very weird approach. People have this thing between their ears, which should help the thinking process. It does not matter what other people state to relief them from their own responsibility. What governments could do, is, to trigger the thinking process, which does not happen. The main problem however is the outstanding actions on physical warfare on European ground. Murder, destruction, sabotage, ... Nothing happened to Russia. Who does war on Europe must feel the consequences in a way he will not do it again and this includes harsh diplomatic measures like sending all diplomatic staff home or execute direct visible actions. Nothing happens despite several attacks in Europe. Bot farms are just a continuation of this hybrid warfare. Sorry to say, the current situation is the result of the inactivity of our governments.

The truly ironic part is all of these youtubers who didn't have a channel before the war started. Lots of people shouldn't be able to share their opinions and I include myself there. Problem is.. people will read this and think their opinions matter... sorry not one iota in the grand scheme of things. Worry about yourself.

As far as rights go, the only thing I can see in my limited view is something along the lines of an online “passport”. I don’t post under my name now because I watch some electrical channels/forums that I ask questions on and I don’t want my name known to others in the field. But the point is that I stand by a comment I make and (usually) think about what I post. What you post/say should come from that person and be treated as if the person said it themself. Tinternet is the new Wild West, and it needs regulating at least to the point where you can tell where the person who posted that comment is from. You can scream freedom of speech, but I don’t care. The social media system we have now is too ripe for manipulation. As JP says, we’re already at war, we just don’t admit it or take steps to protect ourselves as it stands because we don’t want to admit it.

As I said so many times, bin my opinion disinformation should be illegal, if you dont have the facts about what you are talking about you should say so, and as i said before, if you consciously manipulate or lie to people it should be illegal! Freedom comes with responsibility, so freedom of speech also comes with the responsibility to tell the truth!
