Ukrainian fencer Olga Kharlan, a four-time Olympic medallist and world champion, won the individual sabre bout 15-7 and then refused to shake hands with Russian Anna Smirnova, competing as a neutral, at the World Championships in Milan on Thursday.
In fencing's rules, shaking an opponent's hand is mandatory and failure to do so results in a "black card."
Her defiant act comes amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, with Moscow using as a staging ground for what it calls a "special military operation."
Global's Mike Armstrong has more on her defiant act.

If the Olympics start banning athletes from Russia, Belarus, and others because they don't like the politics of their countries, then BRICS countries and their allies should create their own games and invite everyone. American athletes were not banned from any games while the US/NATO murdered 4.5 million people in the Middle East in the past 20 years. Hypocrisy and double standards are absurd.

Disgusting to think this Russian athlete thought they were owed a handshake. Russian and Belarusian athletes shouldn't even be allowed at international competitions. Yes, the athletes are not to blame for the war, however the countries they represent are guilty of international war crimes. It's important to note that the Ukrainian fencer had informed the judges before the match that they would 'touch swords' (acceptable during pandemic) to close the match. The judge agreed. So, I think it was a miscommunication. The word was never passed on to the Russian player, who expected the standard handshake closing of the match. I think the IOC officials were also at fault here for not informing the Russian player, especially if the sword touch is an acceptable form of ending the match. I wonder, how many people today actually studied the conflict rather than just go with what the media or politicians say? The problem with emotion is that it often supersedes logic. Anger, hatred, grief can be overpowering sometimes to the point that people act without thinking. But if you do take a step back and study the whole thing and ask questions and review everything yourself. You'll see a whole different picture than what you initially believed. Like Amber Heard and Johnny Depp for example. Emotion superseded studying the situation first and hence Johnyy Depp's contracts were all burned including the Pirates of the Carribean. But once emotion is taken out and people took a step back and studied the situation, it wasn't actually as black and white as they thought. See how powerful emotions are and how gifted politicians and the media are at manipulating it?

Are you trying to suggest that Russias invasion is justified? What is it that you find when you "study the whole picture"? All i can find is more Russian agression, Russification, Ethnic cleansing, man made famines, and unjustified threats against a democratic and sovereign Ukraine. Please study the centuries of never ending Russian agression and opression against all of it's neighbours before commenting something like this. I know this, because my nation & people has been a victim of it, not that long ago. I don't know if you're a supporter of Russian agression, or if you just think you'll look intelligent by going against what everyone else says, but you're not making any sense.

@@nr1785 Not necessarily saying he is a victim but the issue actually went both ways. Amber was no saint either but people acted like she was. Its kind of like when a bully beats up smaller kids and steal their money but the one time one of the bullied kids eventually fight back people only see that one instance and immediately say that the kid who fought back was the bad guy. Sometimes you have to sit back and listen to both sides of the story before you go and react. Because most people who react by emotion would've scolded or slapped the bullied kid who fought back without understanding first that the kid he hurt was abusing him for years.

I mean, her home has literally been bombed by Russia for almost 2 years now. Maybe her Russian opponent has nothing to do with the war, maybe they're a supporter, who knows? But expecting the victim of a long running war to be completely impartial and accept their opponent's presence, who by definition of competing is acting as a representative to the country that has been bombing her home, is a bit naive and unfair. I can't blame her for not wanting to shake hands in that scenario. She knew the consequences anyway and accepted them, so good for her for sticking to what she believes in - it's just a game anyway.

@@georgesimon6041 I had to look up Donbas, because I can't forget what I don't know. So it's separate conflict that was merged into the current war, where Russian-backed separatists took it over, and Ukraine bombed and fought for it back since 2014 I take it? It's really unfortunate these things have been happening for longer than I knew. I still don't understand your point though, the idea that the countries have been at odds for so long only reinforces the notion of of overwhelming animosity between the two countries, and further justifies her actions in not wanting to shake hands.

I think people are forgetting just how tied in with Kremlin Russian athletes are. They have many times been used in pro-regime & pro-war propaganda. They are tied together. Take the banner behind the Olympians when they returned to Russia saying "For A World Without Nazism" and you KNOW who they were talking about. Athletes with opposing ideas with the state cannot compete in it's name. Why would you want to shake hands with someone that would have no problem being celebrated at home with a banner behind them implying you were a Nazi and therefore your people deserved invasion if they were asked to?
