Can't say that the average Viet Cong did, either, but they did pretty well for themselves. Regardless of whether those North Korean soldiers are "elite" or not, they're likely just a bunch of sad pawns that had no say in going there and would much rather be somewhere else. Also likely the same for the average Ukrainian, Russian or any other soldier in combat. Not denying that sometimes one has to fight, but usually the reasons the average soldiers gets pressed into combat are not of his own doing.

In '73, my brother was summoned to photograph North Korean bodies recovered from a tunnel they were digging on the DMZ. He was told this was a common event, but it would be documented anyway. The autopsies were held in a large tent, needed to contain all of the brass, corpsmen, and miners. The North Koreans had been gassed, and died as soon as their work was detected. After enlarging an access point and airing out with fans the soldier's bodies were drug out and clothing removed. My brother told me that all of the seniors noted right away that none of them looked like soldiers, miners, or even farmers. The procedure started on the first three and immediately stopped. While the techs were throwing their tools into basins and removing their gear they told everyone that the bodies must have been just dressed as soldiers, with the preexisting ailments and a myriad of worm types. Years later, a soldier, son of a general no less, defects with the same problems.
