Ukrainian military release footage of British-supplied Challenger 2 tanks in operation

Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that progress in the counteroffensive has been “slower than desired” as his forces struggle to make a major breakthrough.
The Ukrainian president said his forces “will advance on the battlefield the way we deem best”, as he sought to manage expectations, adding that some people were guilty of thinking the war was like a “Hollywood movie”.
Ukraine has managed to recapture eight small villages as part of its counter-offensive operations in the south over the past couple of weeks. In the past day, forces have had “partial success” as they continue attacking on the southern front while weathering a major assault in the east, a senior Ukrainian defence official said on Wednesday.

Leopard 2A6/7 is still the best tank, if we talk tank vs tank. But it definitely useless against air strike. Moreover Challenger 2 is not better than Leopard 2A6. Pretty sure it will turn become pile of junk again, if still without the escort of anti aircraft/drone vehicle.

During the 2003 invasion of Iraq the Challenger 2 tanks suffered no tank losses to enemy fire, although one was penetrated by an IED. This was, at the time, unprotected by Dorchester armour. The driver was injured. In one encounter within the urban area a Challenger 2 came under attack from irregular forces with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. The driver's sight was damaged and while attempting to back away under the commander's directions, the other sights were damaged and the tank threw its tracks entering a ditch. It was hit directly by fourteen rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile.[14] The crew survived remaining safe within the tank until the tank was recovered for repairs, the worst damage being to the sighting system. It was back in operation six hours later after repairs. One Challenger 2 operating near Basra survived being hit by 70 RPGs in another incident

@@DS9TREK UK has about 227 Challenger 2's (not all will be working and some will be kept in storage for spare parts). There is a plan to upgrade 148 of these to the new Challenger 3. The Challenger 3 will be a decent upgrade untill its time to replace them with something more modern. However, building a new tank from scratch will take years and cost billions (and there were talks about scrapping the tank force alltogether). Hopefully the war in Ukraine will make the MOD revise their plans and look at expanding the tank force in the future. However, I don't know if they are able to build new Challengers as they are old and all the machines used to build probably are no longer in use.

Its sad they didnt even gave them the ERA blocks for the sideskirts, meaning any kind of ATGM the Russians are fielding right now will only take one to take out a Challenger 2 when hit in the crew compartment because the ammunition isnt in any separate compartment but with the crew just like T-72 but not an autoloader

The only tank that stores all of its ammunition in a separate protected compartment is the M1 Abrams. Most sophisticated ATGMs can at least partially defeat ERA, and especially the kind that Ukraine has in massive amounts, Kontakt-1, which is quite old at this point. It has special suspension that allows it to fire with great accuracy even when moving quickly over rough ground, which helps survive ATGMs. In all likelihood all of these tanks will be destroyed this year, that is the nature of war, but they are very very good tanks nonetheless.

@@matstick199 Yep. It's a common misconception that blow-out panels = invulnerable to ammo rack explosions. Challenger 2 does have special wet storage bins for explosive rounds so that's one up on the Leopard's hull storage I believe

A good tank In the right hands It takes years to become a competent crew but in wartime the crews won’t have that luxury. I hope they were given the smoke rounds. They are very useful against infantry and bunkers. A squadron is an edge, but they will need more and we should have donated our warriors too which are still a great vehicle. And the Giant Viper fleet too. Those that know will know.

In what way? If it is the greatest, why are not more countries using it? Besides that the amount Ukraine has is barely useful. They are using primarily the Leopards atm. because they know if they need repair its a lot easier to get the parts from the NATO countries. UA is holding those units back for that reason, because if they go to battle they will probably be a complete loss even if they "could" be repaired in theory. It is just not possible with the supplies. Same goes with the ammo.

That's probably true, some tanks will be destroyed, none are invicible, but before then, there will be a bigger pile of Russian tanks with thier turrets blown off. I also saw an investigative journalist look closely at the video released by the Kremlin, claiming to show a Russian drone impacting the turret of a Leopard tank. The journalist then produced a video released *sixteen years ago* by the manufacturers of the Leopard tank in Germany. It showed the efficiency of the turret armour when struck by an anti-tank weapon in use at that time. When the two video clips were frozen and compared, side by side, they both matched exactly. The camera angles, the dust cloud behind the tank. Even the rocks and stones next to the Leopard's track were identical..... More crap from the Kremlin...... The funny part is that they believe people won't or can't see through their bullsh*t.

Very good. They're reliable and have a reputation for survivability. The gun is a little underpowered versus other tanks but most tanks don't end up fighting other tanks anyway. Some of the tech on board is a little old now, it's from the 1990s, but it's still much more sophisticated than most of the Soviet-era stuff Russia is fielding currently. It has special suspension which allows it to drive faster over rougher terrain than other tanks, and fire with better accuracy when moving. It's also considered comfortable and well liked by crews for its amenities like the kettle.

I finally checked and saw that I made a little mistake: the record is still held by a British tank, but a Challenger 1, NOT a Challenger 2. It was a tank of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, which, on 26 February 1991 (Gulf War), destroyed an Iraqi tank at a range of 5100 metres using a L26A1 APFSDS with a depleted uranium penetrator. But I guess what a Challenger 1 can do, a Challenger 2 can also do it...
