Ukrainian Troops Defend Bakhmut's Northern Flank From Russian Attacks

Ukrainian troops are fighting to hold back Russian forces from advancing on Bakhmut from positions near Soledar, an industrial town located a few kilometers to the north of the besieged city. Tank and mortar units are shelling enemy positions and laying down cover for Ukrainian infantry.

Attacking is far more lethal than defending. Ukraine is smart to let Russians wear themselves out attaking the same targets repeatedly. Gives the UA plenty of time to prepare, rearm etc.

The key is holding the rear supply lines. As long as Bakhmut is in supply, it will be a Russian graveyard, since soldiers attacking a heavily defended fortified position frontally, always suffer much worse losses.. If it is cut off from supply, will it become a Ukrainian graveyard, for any Ukrainians who remain behind.

@@scallen3841 I mean, that's a T64 tank in the video. As in 1964. That's about the bottom of the barrel in terms of armored vehicles in this war. Ukraine has a sizable stock of T72's a reasonable number of newer models. Not to mention a trickle of modern western tanks. Yet they aren't being seen much. This video is in line with other media reports from the area. It seems Ukraine is being very stingy in what is being used on the front lines right now, even in Bakhmut. The big question right now is did Ukraine really build up an offensive force of 100k+ with modern equipment and training over the winter? Videos like this say yes.

My worry is that they are so focused on keeping the best of the Russian troops pinned down that they are not taking into account the toll it is taking on their own troops. I've been following this war since day 1 and the Ukrainian soldiers always say the same thing when interviewed and they hear incoming shells. "It's time to get back to work." What strong proud people they are and yet they still are kind, I've seen interviews where they share their food with stray dogs and cats and many bunkers had a pet of some sort. One soldier joked about the cat he was petting and said that she always found a way to disappear when the shelling started and when it stopped she always came back uninjured. They were never sure where she disappeared to and I think they were trying to call her "Houdini" I think but no one really spoke English well enough to pronounce it correctly. I thought it was a suitable name. Slava Ukraine!
