Ukrainian Woman Tells Of Rape By Russian Soldiers

A Ukrainian woman has given RFE/RL a detailed account of how she was raped by a Russian Army soldier. To protect her privacy, we have pixelated her face and we are not disclosing her name. Ukrainian police have been informed of the case.

My German grandma, who back then lived in what is now the Czech Republic, is 89 and she told me many stories about WW2. One of them is how her family always had to hide her and her older sisters from Russian soldiers, so that they won't get raped by them... hearing this feels like a terrible step back in time....

In the early 1700's in Finland we had a 8 year long period called "isoviha", the great wrath. During these 8 years the whole of Finland (back then Eastern Sweden) was occupied by Russian forces. It was an era of utter horror and terror for the peasants (most of the population) of the time. Russian soldiers killed, tortured, raped and enslaved pretty much every person they found in the land. During this years long period every single peasant was forced to live in forest hideouts, as houses were prime targets for the soldiers, who relied on the local landscape for looting. Mind I add that the very limited food supply and below freezing temperatures of the North during winters made it just that much more difficult to survive such outdoor conditions. Some remntants of the hideouts still exist today. For reference, just in Northern Osthbornia 2/3 of the population was wiped out by the end. Tens of thousands were sold as either sex slaves or to build Russian cities. Horrible tales of torture were passed on orally from one generation to the next by those who survived. Unimaginable acts of violence against people who had no means to fight back and weren't in no way involved in the on-going conflicts. If you were a woman, you were raped and possibly murdered. If you were a child, you were sold as a slave. If you were a man, you were tortured to death with anguishing methods, such as burning, boiling, blinding, axing or decapitating. Left the nation with long lasting scars towards the East. Those scars were in fact STILL present during our last wars, over 2 centuries after these events. Nowadays it's just a chapter in our history books. But it did leave us with a saying that still lives in the language. "The danger always comes from the East".

This reminds me of what happend to my grandmother who had to flee as a german from slesia , when the red army approached. As well as being raped, my aunt, at the time a 1 year old baby was killed by a russian plane, shooting at the refugee group. She never received any therapy, but she kept going for her other 3 kids, raising them alone, as her husband also died in the war. She made it to West-Germany and was the most loving, peaceful grandmother one could wish for. I stand with Ukraine and all woman who had to go through something similiar, no matter the cost.

We can all say thoughtful words and pray, but what are we really really going to do collectively to stop this from being worse than it could? I really urge others to find charity sources and donate any amount they can or at least play fundraising videos on these topics on repeat. It's really the least we can do because the thought doesn't really count when action is what is needed. This is part of my mother's story, she was 16 when Russian speaking Soviet soldiers raped her, then sent her to a gulag in Siberia. Where she survived for 2 years before the Soviets joined the allies. She was one of the lucky ones to leave after 2 years. Of the 1.5 million Poles sent to remote Russia only 100K got out during the war. Then only 300K returned after the war. There's something about the Russian culture that breeds men to rape at a greater degree than other western cultures. The women of Germany were brutalized near the end of the war, often raped to death by Soviet soldiers. Russian men today kill their female, Russian partners and spouses far more than do Europeans. At last count the number was 17K per year, and about 70% of all Russian women that are murdered are killed by domestic violence.

I'm not surprised at all that this happened.
