Verguni is a traditional Ukrainian cookie made from unleavened yeast-free dough, fried in vegetable oil. Depending on the regions, the dough and shape of cookies may differ. So, for example, traditionally the dough was cut into lozenges, an incision was made inside and wrapped inside the incision. But verguns could also be made in the form of rolls or roses. In the Kiev version of vergunov, in addition to the standard components, rum and almonds were added, in Konotop - lemon zest, and so on.
Verguns were often prepared for holidays, even during the fast period: girls baked them at Vespers, Housewives - at Christmas and for generous people, midwives-for grandchildren.
Recently, a museum dedicated to verguns was even opened in the village of Chechelevo, Poltava region, where you can learn about the origin of this dessert and the stories associated with it. In addition, the owner of the museum teaches guests how to make traditional cookies.
