M109 is still a great lady with a big punch.Not as accurate as modern systems,with a modern fire direction system and good spotting,she is still valid.And just as good as the Soviet counterparts.And much more accurate than the 152 Msta2s19 or the 122 Gvozdika.

They got 22 M109 from us in Norway. And most of them were the upgraded M109A3GNM model. That's the one with upgraded intercom and new navigation and positioning system. (upgraded after 2000 some time.)

you can recognize it from the muzzle brake that it is an Italian M109L, Italy has supplied more than 100 M109s and a good number of fh70s and Pz2000s and m270s to Ukraine, quite a lot I would say.

You need to understand that this war is showing that with air defences you cannot fly freely in the war zone. Sending F16s or Gripens will just mean more scrap metal plastering the steppe! A large percentage of these planes will take off only once! It’s only the lying media that makes them out to be game changers ….they aren’t.

Noticed how he says its exhausting work? Thats why they send all the tall strong lads (often farmers sons) to the artillery in a conscript army. The small ones to the tanks and the rest to the infantry. Thats how difficult army selection is. Lol😂

That's going to be tough. NATO dismantled a lot of their cold war stockpiles in the 90's and 00's. Russia kept everything from M1891/30 rifles to T-54 tanks in storage. Same goes for artillery shells.

It appears to be totally random how far into the barrel those shells are rammed .. and how much empty space is from there to the propellant charge and from there to the breech. Either that can't be precise, or there is something I don't know ... what?

It's something you don't know and learn all about in artillery school. Braschaat class of 1990. The answers are technical and complex. It's a combination of the rifled part of a barrel, the copper ring on the shell and the chamber of the barrel. The chamber is for the propellant.

I am not a gunner....but I think you can only push the actual round so far into the tube and the it stops when the copper driving bands engage the rifling. It take the incredible pressure of the powder charge to get it moving and for the driving bands to compress and bite into the rifling and start the whole rotating and movement down the tube. The chamber can accommodate the various charges based on the desired range.

Correct. The chamber is quite large in fact. The space is actually needed to prevent non discharge of the propellant due to lack of air. Partly. Not entirely but it plays a role. It makes a non discharge inside a howitzer one of the most dangerous things imaginable. Because you need to open the barrel to investigate (after long time waiting!) and the sudden flow of air can discharge the propellant with an open culas. Boom goes the howitzer.

It is interesting to read the battles of WW2 that were fought in Eastern Europe including Ukraine, then Cold War scenarios, (usually involving USSR and NATO, with Ukraine being part of the USSR), as a battlefield. Now, Ukrainians fighting Russians with old Soviet and NATO, (including German), equipment. Obviously a lot of new western equipment for Ukraine as well, but to see German manufactured armor fighting Russians there again....... what a strange world, though some would say predictable.

I can understand what he means by exhausting. I used to have to unload I'm guessing 3-400 pound loads of rock by wheelbarrow from the street to back of house that was just build. I helped with the landscaping part of job. One load after another for most of the day. Back and forth. I was not just exhausted, I was burned out, fried, drained. So I feel for these guys that are doing this every day.
