Ukrainians flee Putin’s troops | DW Documentary

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are fleeing Putin’s military assault into neighboring Romania. They arrive exhausted and traumatized, but are safe there. Yet some are heading in the opposite direction, to join their families in war-ravaged Ukraine.
Maria and her two grandchildren had to flee from a village near Odesa. They hitchhiked and walked, Maria with the help of her walker frame. The Black Sea port of Odesa was bombed right at the start of the war. 71-year-old Maria and her two grandchildren travel through the turmoil of war to reach the Danube River, which forms part of the border to Romania and the EU. After two full days with hardly a break, Maria is exhausted when they finally arrive at the border. But because her identity documents don’t meet EU requirements, she isn’t permitted to enter Romania. She and her grandchildren find themselves caught in a bureaucratic limbo, uncertain what the future holds.
Nadja and Roman - which are not their real names -- are determined to head in the opposite direction, into war-torn Ukraine. The two were on holiday in Turkey when war broke out at home. Now they want to get back as quickly as possible. Their two children are waiting with their grandmother in Kharkiv, one of the Ukrainian cities under heavy attack by Putin’s troops. Will they reach their family in time? And what will happen to them then?

In Romania everyone from Ukraine is accepted, even if they don't have a passport or id card. But there is a certain procedure at the border and this is why they need to wait, if they don't have a valid document.

I have seen several interviews of Ukrainians, including with government officials, asking them if they believed the war would happen and every single one said no. The country was left open to attack and kept at a low state of readiness. As well as Ukrainian defences have been holding up, they could be doing much better if they took the warnings seriously months ago and prepared accordingly.

There are clearly different perceptions, but i don’t think it is principled or ideological. There is just a cognitive tendency to empathize more with people that one can relate to, with shared traditions and values. We also form connections based on geographic proximity. But morally, if you put any suffering human or family in front of the average person they would care equally. Other factors like ethnicity or religion would be irrelevant.
