Thank you for this lecture Dr Abramson. Many, including myself struggle to separate the Ukrainian people from inherent anti semitism. Yet, in viewing the tragedy that has befallen the Ukraine over the past month my perceptions have being shaken, by a Jewish President and PM and by numerous Jewish members of the Ukrainian parliament and their heroic rallying of the people of Ukraine united in the face of this Russian aggression. May peace come swiftly to Ukraine. Thank you for your balanced approach.

I appreciate the way you march through the history without condemning one side or the other for the tragedies. We need to understand history from many perspectives without taking extreme political positions. That said, the State of Israel is the result of our history. Israel is the way we fight back.

@@tedbundy2797 Well, not quite so. The UK certainly did NOT help establish Israel, and in fact tried every possible option to prevent Israel from establishing including preventing holocaust survivors from escaping into Israel, all against the mandate and charter that was given to them by the League of Nations to establish homeland to the Jews in Palestine which then included what is now Jordan. The British did create, out of thin air, the state of Jordan with a foreign king that was brought from Saudi Arabia (and so Jordan is in fact the homeland of the Palestinian Arabs). The US is indeed our greatest Allie’s and friend. But they too tried to influence David Ben Gurion to delay and wait with announcing Israel establishing. Luckily Ben Gurion did not listen to the Americans and created Israel. Anyone that helped and helps Israel now, is simply doing justice to the true indigenous people of the land of Israel. It’s not a favor it’s simply the right thing to do historically and morally.

This is fascinating information. I’ve traced one side of my family from Lithuania back to the 1700s. But all I know about my ancestors from Ukraine was where my great-grandparents were from. It was a part of the Khmelntskyi region. Now I’m a bit horrified to discover that this area was named after the leader of the Cossacks who were known to be the anti-Semitic perpetrators of many pogroms. It’s amazing how many of these collaborators are still being honored with statues, building and street names, stamps, etc. What a disgrace.

As a Pole, who read polish historian, I have two comments. First: landlords were polish, but not from Poland. They were local aristocracy, but the only existing aristocracy culture (and court) were polish, so when they become rich, they become Poles -- they start to talk in polish, they change orthodox Christianity to Catholic church, etc. Second comment: economic roots are important, but it the Jews were "aliens" for both sides, and both sides suspected them, to support the others.

Hello to you, and all the Jewish people. To give you an idea who am I, before I make my comments. I am an Australian that had a Protestant mother and Catholic father. In the middle of last century, believe it or not, that was the prime division in the community. A trivial division in light of the ethnic tensions talked about in this video. I am an avid consumer of historical videos going back to the earliest civilizations. Henry speaks in a very measured way. From what I have learnt is that barbaric behaviour is rife throughout history, and we are living in relative peaceful times. An example of barbarity I will site, is the number of cities that when conquered, the entire population is killed. Every man, woman and child. Those types of atrocities are seen throughout history. What I am trying to say is the idea of civility can be swept away so quickly if hatred of the "other" is formented in a population. It is usually a ploy to divert the blame from the real culprits causing their plight. I congratulate the jews for contribution to culture it has given to mankind. History is always refining itself, and not to be dismissed because it conflicts with your world view. That also should not be static. Don't dismiss facts that make you uncomfortable. In my country, we are trying to come to terms with our own atrocities that was inflicted on the indigenous people of Australia.

The history you have presented here is true and well known. I have read many books about the role of Jews in collecting taxes for Polish nobles and most of Polish historians agree that the greed of Polish nobles was in the roots of Chmielnicki Uprising. However I would be interested if you can answer the question if the Jews were forced to be tax collectors by any king's decree on condition that otherwise they can not settle in Polish Commonwealth or they have chosen this occupation by themselves as most suited for them? Because it seems strange that so many Jews were enagaged in these services, whereas when Dutch, Scottish or Germans were coming to Poland in XVII century they were mostly engaged in crafts and trade.

I don’t know the exact history of this but I believe for Jews unlike Irish or Dutch Christians, there were many restrictions on what they are allowed to do and work. For example I believe they were not allowed to work in agriculture or own farms etc. so many times the work they took was what leftovers that were available for them. But I may be wrong. I hope Dr Henry M can share more details on this question.

Thank you Henry. Often I read historical texts that go something like '...and so the Jewish population was invited to the region when the nobility issued a formal decree inviting them to reside ' These words are basically useless. They don't tell us much. ( I'm thinking of Northeastern Hungary, my family, just miles from the Ukarine border) I think the more we know, the more actuate we can be. Additionally, thank you also for talking about the minting of currency within the context of this whole setup...early on in the historical timeline. This shows us the genesis of so many tropes about 'Jews controlling the money in the world' Also thank you for explaining that this situation evolved over hundreds of years...it wasn't sudden...so ( later on ) the Rothchilds didn't invent 'getting a royal charter to create currency'... that had really had been an evolving and tested model by the various princes...who no doubt had refined it for maximum profit. Related to all this, I also wonder about the period between WWI and WWII in Germany when small towns began to print their own currency "Notgeld" and furiously hyper-inflated it into nothing. Obviously they were lacking any form of 'institutional memory' about best practices. Thanks again

Thank you for making this video and for the obvious effort to be accurate. But I think that your reference to Wellhausen is apt. It's very hard to get away from the impression in both this video and the one you did when Russia invaded, that you are trying to present the Ukrainians in the best possible light and somewhat glossing over some of the real historical issues. I think that this is unfortunate - I think it's perfectly possible to see the evil that Putin is committing without trying to lighten the history. There are two things you minimize when talking about the toll taken by the Khmelnitsky depredations. One is the scale of the butchery. True, in raw numbers it was (obviously) far lower than some of the numbers bandied about. But that's not the whole story. It's pretty clear that they killed "only 18-20K Jews because that's all they could get their hand on. I'm not being flippant - they killed out entire communities and by the time they were done almost half of the entire Jewish population was gone. It's hard to avoid the conclusion that they were trying to rid Ukraine of Jews completely. The other is scope of the cruelty of the Cossacks. Yes, the uprising was primarily rooted in economic factors. But the behavior went well beyond just kicking the overlords and their agents out. Without trying to judge them by modern mores, you simply cannot get away from the fact that when it came to the Jews, they engaged in gratuitous torture. Given that Khmelnitsky's decisions led Ukrain from Poland pretty much straight to the rule of Russia, perhaps it behooves the Ukrainians to be open to a somewhat more realistic and nuanced, and less heroic attitude towards him and his behavior. I think that a lot of people would be a lot more open and comfortable if they didn't see the man pretty much venerated as The Liberator of Ukraine with no acknowledgement of the deeply troubling part of his legacy.

Thank you for this program even at this difficult time. However, I must say that the beginning ran like a Ukrainian stereotype - Rich Polish landlords in Poland far, far away; exploited Ukrainians working on the land with tatter clothes; and the Jewish tax-collectors trying to get every penny out of them. That is why I had a good laugh at the picture that you choice to illustrate your point. Now what about the Poles who lived in Galicia who were not rich, but quite numerous until 1945? What about the ethnic German minority ? How did these two groups fit into your simplified scheme? What about the Armenians? I think that the situation was much more complex than what you want to make it out to be. Also, I find that you are looking at events in the very way that the 3 honorable historians, whom you mentioned at the beginning, did NOT want you to do. You are taking your somewhat one-sided view of the present conflict and projecting it unfairly on an event in the 17th century. What would our massacred ancestors think of such a biased presentation? I hope that one day when this conflict is over that you will revisit this time of real Jewish sorrow and present the events as they really happened. Stephan

interesting and informative lecture. However i have hard time to accept and look so lightly at the Khmel'nyts'kyi pogrom even if they "only" killed 20,000 or 100,000 Jews. The destruction measure to the community and the enormous size of this pogromm should be measured by the percentage of the Jewish communities destruction. If there were 40,000 Jews altogether and they "only" killed 20,000, that's a 50% at the minimum, of the Jewish population in Ukraine at the time. That's a proportion that is quite similar to the Nazi and the Holocaust destruction to Jewish population in EU. On top of that, the level of inhumane cruelty, as documented from these pogroms, are equal and even surpass the cruelty level of the Nazis. And finally, I am not aware of any other ethnicity that their blood was so cheap and easy to spill as the Jews in that region. That was most likely due to a combination of antisemitism on the one hand and the fact that Jews didn't have any arms and/or any militias, and basically were peaceful people that are easy to target and hurt. I'm sorry my friend, I do like your channel, lectures and point of view but the tremendous severity of these pogroms in Ukraine towards the Jews is not something that can be taken lightly, downsized or downplayed.

some interesting points of discussion that really stood out for me. You refer to " the Jews & the Ukrainians" . Never together as a collective Ukrainian people but as two separate entities living together on a land. In previous videos you refer in much the same way " the Jews & the ____". It seems that wherever the Jews go they set up their own societies, rules, practices and for a short while times are good, yet they are inevitably followed by hardships (pogroms). You tend to place blame for these pogroms on 'antisemitism' and give very little merit to the behaviours of the Jews. For centuries in many different countries the result always seems to end the same - persecution. There is an underlying tone of "its not our fault" in the way you explain things, perhaps you don't even realise you are doing it. as an outsider looking in, it is very apparent. Another interesting point you mentioned was about the falsifying of death figures. I am interested to hear your lecture on the holocaust to see if the same rule applies, given the mathematical & logistical impossibilities and sheer absurdity of some of the claims and overwhelming lack of evidence. Never the less I am enjoying your lectures so far and as a Catholic I have learned a lot. (first seek to understand, then be understood)

Thinking outside the box: This maybe a tad controversial. For a long time it struck as rather sinister that the Polish nobility were clearly the oppressors of the Ukrainians but didnt want to be its face and hence the role of that fell on the middle men- tax collectors, landlords , tavern owners all Jews. Perhaps the ruling WASP elite in the 1950s U.S saw this in the context of the socio economic uprising, stroked their chins and thought -what if we allowed Jews into the Ivy League, Wall Street and other prestigious institutions where we still control the levers of power (as they actually do) while they get to be the public face of the establishment which is now the object of ire rather than respect? win, win! I am sorry to say this as outside observer, that Jews maybe academically gifted but their instincts for self preservation(outside the state of Israel) are very poor, and they foolishly fall in these traps.

Your use of the term “racist” to describe Jews who have a negative view of Ukranians based on their history of antisemitism is absurd and offensive and disqualifies you as an historian. You can argue that such views are not justified based on historical realities (although that is a hard argument to make) but in what way is it “racist”? And how do such views imply that all Jews are always beyond reproach? Really pathetic.

The Professor is aware of these events. When he criticizes the Lachrymose view of history, he is referring to the tendency to treat the hundreds of years of peace and cooperation between these events as unimportant or anomalies. There is a tendency to view anti-Semitism as part of the "essence" of Ukrainian people, a universal constant across time and space, only held in check by the domination of Ukraine's more "civilized" neighbours. Despite the Holocaust, Jewish people don't generally hold this view about Germans. The belief that Ukrainians specifically, out of all the groups that have perpetrated violence on the Jewish people, are inherently anti-Semitic, is racist, essentialist, and cannot be sustained by the evidence.

From Shem to Abraham to Jacob and the 12 Tribe of Israel.... how do you get Ashkenazi in the mix, smh ??? 1925 jewish Encyclopedia says modern jews are not Israelites and definitely not Japheth because his father is Gomer not Shem. To much identity thieves with so much lies and foolery, is this some insecurity of ancestry and shame of who you are. Did you know in the US The penalty for impersonating a police officer varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. For example, in Texas, impersonating a public servant with the intent to cause someone to submit to his authority is a crime. The typical punishment for impersonating a police officer depends on whether the crime is a felony or a misdemeanor, and may include: Probation Fines of up to $1,000 At least five years in prison Imagine identity Thieves stealing a family inheritance, land, country etc. The sentence would be longer. The Children of Israel are Kings over all Mathew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the Lost sheep of the (HOUSE OF ISRAEL,) NOT HOUSE OF JAPHETH, NOT HOUSE OF HAM Revelation 2:9 Complete Jewish Bible “I know how you are suffering and how poor you are (though in fact you are rich!), and I know the insults of those who call themselves Jews but aren’t - on the contrary, they are a synagogue of the Adversary. Revelation 3:9 Complete Jewish Bible Here, I will give you some from the synagogue of the Adversary, those who call themselves Jews but aren’t - on the contrary, they are lying - see, I will cause them to come and prostrate themselves at your feet, and they will know that I have loved you. www.britannica.com/topic/Khazar Khazar, member of a confederation of Turkic-speaking tribes that in the late 6th century CE established a major commercial empire covering the southeastern section of modern European Russia. Although the origin of the term Khazar and the early history of the Khazar people are obscure, it is fairly certain that the Khazars were originally located in the northern Caucasus region and were part of the western Turkic empire (in Turkistan). The Khazars were in contact with the Persians in the mid-6th century CE, and they aided the Byzantine emperor Heraclius (reigned 610-641) in his campaign against the Persians.

This video is somewhat trying to justify genocide. It is certain that many of thousands of Jews, whole families, got purposefully slaughtered during the rebellion. It doesn't matter what economic justification the murders had, it's still genocide. Also, Zelensky is Orthodox Christian by faith. He shouldn't be called Jewish without some qualification.
