This is a window of time to allow the fund manager time to properly exit some positions to fulfill client withdrawal requests.
What Is an IPO Lock-Up Period and How Long Is It? This is a lockup period if you hold stock. Say you're involved in a company that has done an IPO. The IPO is launched and the lockup period stops share owners who are benefiting from the IPO from selling too soon. This is to protect big dumping of assets on the market straightaway.

So only insiders cant sell ipo shares in lock up period? How about if i, just as a regular day trader, want to short ipo shares via online broker? Can i do so? Or if i cant short shares during lock up period, can i at least go long and then sell to take profit during lock up period ?

If you're a regular day trader you can just about short sell at any stage - there is no lockup period for you (only insiders might be limited).

@@ukspreadbetting As i understand number of shares offered to public for trading must be less then outstanding number of shares owned by insiders during lock up period. right ? But if you look at PINS, its number of shares offered and number of outstanding shares are the same! So what is the point of lock up in this case?

i don't know of any such rule. Lock-up periods normally apply to insiders such as a company's founders, owners,managers and employees. ... The main purpose of an IPO lock-up period is to thwart investors from flooding the market with large numbers of shares, which would initially depress the stock's price.

Its just i was wondering why PINS shares offered are 75 000 000 and shares outstanding also 75 000 000. Lockup Expiration 10/15/2019. Here is the link www.nasdaq.com/markets/ipos/company/pinterest-inc-842469-89263 I believed that number of shares offered and number of outstanding shares cant be equal.
