In this ukulele lesson, I'll show you the seven steps to playing a melody between chords. I am using a baritone ukulele, but you can also practice this exercise on a low G tenor ukulele.

Holy Crap hands down the best lesson I’ve EVER seen anywhere. I love improvisation but am usually limited to looping as I just didn’t know how to do it any other way. Now you’ve broken it down we can literally choose any chord progression, choose a key and improv. Taking this further as a learning tool you can then learn the inversions of the chords so you can play up and down the neck and the scale positions around the inversions. Fretboard Unlocked 👏👏👏

That was such a great lesson! Thank you so much! I have a favor to ask... Would it be possible to give us the same lesson actually using a tenor in low G? For those of us who do not play Baritone, it's a challenge to keep up with what you're teaching us in the lesson and then try to transpose chords and notes on the fretboard in my head. to make it work in GCEA tuning. It's a bit too much (for me anyway). Just a suggestion from someone who would really like to lean this technique. Thanks again for your lesson...you're a great teacher!

There is a lot to understand and I had to grab my Baritone to better follow along though I first tried with my Low G. Now I hope that I get to the point of deep understanding. But theeeeeen… I will never play anything else than my own improvisations. So, that’s bad for you… Just kidding 😂 Thank you for this wonderful lesson that was very inspiring and I loved this beautiful melody a lot.

Great stuff, loving it. 💘 2 things: 1. You call out tenor chords when you play bari. Even on screen. 2. You said in the beginning about a chord, but then played single notes. The notes themselves weren't the root notes... 😕.

It seems like you manicure your hands differently. Your right hand nails are long and your left hand nails are short. Is this to help picking with the right and pressing the strings with the left?

Hey Marco, thanks so much for this tutorial. Can you use notes from the scale but from a different position on the ukulele? For example, up an octave. Or would it sound weird to mix the two positions together?

You can. It’ll make the exercise more challenging though since you’ll have to play the chords in first position and then move up the neck to play the melody.
