Fitting Flatwounds & Pickguards Kala SB U-Bass

During the live stream I will talk about the process of fitting the pickguards and flatwound strings to the Kala SB U-Bass and also the results when I looked at whether the Kala Flatwounds will fit other mini basses. I will try to show short video extracts of the process but there will be a full length video in the future.

cool! with the pick guard, i can get a neutral primary color of the instrument and then i can get the pick guard in the color I want! thanks for the tip!

Hello Rachel, When I purchased my first S B Ubass I already had a set of 23" scale strings which I got for a Tiny Boy bass that I gad sometime ago. I had a Luthier fit them for me and set the bass up. All I can say is the result was AWSOME!!!.In the past though I have fitted Kala 23" and Gold Tone 25" flat wounds on basses which were fitted with Magnetic pickups with no real drop off in volume from the strings. looking forward to your demo with eager anticipation.

Hi Gary, Thanks for the info. I already have a set of the Goldtone MBLS strings on order so will have a go at fitting those onto one of the Flight basses when they arrive.

Hello Rachel. The problem is with the length of them. The first set I bought were for a 23"scale bass. When I came to fit them I found they were in fact 25" scale. I had a 25" scale bass with mag pick ups. I put those strings on that bass. That is how I found out how well they work. If you unpack those strings you and measure them you will find out for sure. Gold Tone may have corrected the anomaly more recently??

Hi Gary, yes I'd figured they were made for the 25" goldtone bass as a few other people had mentioned this but also said they work with the magnetic pickups hence why I've ordered them to try with the Flight mini JB as that has a longer string length on the G. we'll see when they arrive but I still think the Kala strings may fit too.

I was thinking about the fitting of flatwound strings. One way you might try to use the longer ones is a variation of what you did the last time. Cut the string to the length but unwind just the very tip that goes into the slot so that everything that goes around the peg is wound. That should keep it from unwinding as well as the wound from moving over the core. No soldering needed.

Great suggestion. I did try thinking about this but there was just too much length of string to go around the tuning machine head.👍

Hello Rachel. What is the scale length are the Flight basses? If they are 23" scale you may have a problem.

A problem with what Gary? The Flight basses are 23.5 inch scale.
