Erc Misanthrope Gorguts set a bar so high that no one could compete. Then bands like Ulcerate and Nero di Marte learned how to draw influence from Gorguts 10 years later while also not competing with them. Gorguts was then influenced by those bands and beat everyone at that game as well.

99% of conments all over their discography on youtube be like "this is Immolation and Gorguts combination" and 70% also add Deathspell Omega I mean they're right, but I like how the comparison is so damn frequent, really tells how actually precise that comparison is (in a good way). To me, they're just a spectacular band. No, really, they get what it takes.

ulcerate sound nothing like gorguts they might use some of the same chords but sound nothing a lot. ulcerate has more in common with DSO , Immolation, and neurosis

thedeathmachine666 yeah exactly. The general atmosphere and feeling is nothing like Obscura. Ulcerate and DSO feels so cold and melancholic. It gives me a feeling like live is just meaningless and empty. Like a big cosmic void or something. Techniques used hasn't much to do with the emotion that the music brings.

Ulcerate have been active since 2000 and Obscura started somewhere around 2002. Deathspell Omega have been around since 1997-1998 or something. We can easily conclude that DSO was probably their influence. Not the only one, of course, but it is certainly NOT Obscura.

Except for the plenty great old school death metal bands like Dead Congregation, Vasaeleth, Grave Miasma etc, we definitely also need bands like Ulcerate to bring new stuff to the game. Ulcerate in my opinion is the "best" original death metal band around. I don't claim to know EVERY death metal band around, but I consider it unlikely that there exists a band I can appreciate more than Ulcerate. Hail from Greece.
