I'm with Uli 100% on this. There is a reason why professional golfers in ball golf putt gently closer to the hole then they putt further from the hole. Because the ball won't drop if you fire it over the hole at a 100mph. Same is true and reasonable in disc golf. The closer you get to the hole/basket the more touch/finesse is required. Physics.

We’re comparing it to ball golf because it takes touch and it’s a learned skill. If you take the touch out of putting slope of greens doesn’t really matter and putting in golf becomes significantly easier. I don’t think baskets should catch everything thrown at them. The goal is to come to rest in the bottom of the baskets, chains are just an aid.
@DiscGolfDemastus5 ай бұрын
@@mattlaberge3130 the differences in possible throw angles compared to a hit ball’s angle are vastly different. So each athlete’s capability off the tee is different. The putting IS different. We don’t have to try to make it a carbon copy of another sport.

I agree. You’re on the pro tour. Everyone wants a standardized basket. But let’s be real here, learn how to putt on a different basket. Not every course is the same and that goes with basket. Yes there should be a standard size but if some need more touch and less speed than other baskets. Welp learn it. As a fan and spectator, it makes it interesting when these guys have spit outs because they putt so hard. Keep the sport interesting.
@ctb2975 ай бұрын
I think it adds to the drama to have different baskets, put different ones on every hole. The difference between a old Innova 24 and the newer 28 is enough to make you switch from a soft plastic to a hard one or putt softer. The greens on a course need added elements to create excitement and placing a basket that is known not to catch like a MACH 3 at elevation is completely different than a chain star pro. The blame is on Gannon for not adapting. Experience helps overcome any basket.

The back row of chains have no hog rings, or extra chain links. I find myself getting spit outs quite often. Moral of the story, it's the basket, not the putter! I want to relate this to Golf if you go to putt an 8 footer and you blast the thing it’s going to skip over the hole. Bring back cones. Make Burr put on cones. I want to see his face when he slams one in and it energetically rebounds back out again, or hits just high and sends one 100' deep. But kidding aside I love what Uli is saying here. There's positives and negatives to the various forms of putting. Hyzer angle limits lateral variation but can slip through chains and sail with wind. Push putts have problem with wind but are more likely to land soft. Spin putts limit wind impact but (in this case) can lead to discers slamming chains so boisterously they rebound. In the end it's up to the discer. They play the baskets presented in the same way the play the course or the conditions as presented. If a set of baskets seems to return energy on the disc a bit more then the discer needs to make the adjustment in the same way they would shifting wind conditions. I'll even add, without trying to pile on Burr specifically too much, it is not unusual to see younger pros (and younger players in general) putting with aggressive spin putt methods while older players or more season pros start to chill out more on the putting pace. I mean I have a very soft push putt because I'm an absolute coward wanting to avoid long return putts, but just a look at the spin putt clinic Simon put a week ago being able to fire from deep in C2 without the disc hammering the chains. Keep talking sense Uli!

It’s important to understand that the goal isn’t to just “hit the chains” and then use any degree of speed on your putt to do that. Putting can be a delicate art form at times. Sure, using a lot of speed in your putt may give you greater consistency and equate to more made putts in the long run, but it’s not without certain tradeoffs. Most pro’s are happy to make that tradeoff.

This is why I love Uli. He knows the game very well. We all know this sport isn’t about just power. Finesse and shot shape are way more important. One way of solving this problem, as stated by Uli in the past, is standardized baskets. The problem with that is, it brings in a lack of individualized product and a lack of competition. Think of the European ones with the wine glass looking cage and base.(just a beautiful looking basket) That problem could be solved by standardizing ONLY the chain requirements. So, we all end up putting on the same chains.
@oneopinion68065 ай бұрын
If they standardized the only way it should work is DGPT has their own baskets they install in a courses collars. They should take on the cost. But we know whatever they pick they would still have some segment of the pros carping about how they picked the wrong one.

Off topic, but a good rant topic... Scoring Stats and how the Pro Tour barely marks circle 2, 1 and the bulls eye. How do they expect accuracy when you can't tell visually because the gaps are SO LARGE between those whiskers. I'm watching Champions Cup now and it looks like the bulls eye is marked by 4 whiskers. REALLY? A circle being marked by a square of whiskers? MSO was marked really bad too. I did stats and sometimes couldn't find any C2 whiskers. Seemed like they only marked the close side on some holes. Players do go long from time to time. They need to spray paint some dashes between the whiskers. Or how about just paint the whole circle! Okay, I'm done lol
