You will now be my go to for everything! I have had fresh no’s my whole life. I am ready to make the leap to a reef tank. I feel like the more videos I watch, the more I need to learn. I am going with a 75 gallon so not even sure what filtration I need but am studying your vids to avoid mistakes! Any advice is welcome from the awesome KZbinrs. I read the comments as well 🤗

you guys are awesome. thank you all for the great work you have done. now, you need to make a video library compiling the best topics, tips, tricks, and advice. i am sure a lot of people would buy it just to have on the shelf next to their tank. especially sense you guys have helped to make those tanks awesome.

Always happy to come home from work to a new BRS episode, especially this series. I've been in the process of building the same tank, 60 rimless cube in the same stand. My rocks have been curing for about a month now and my build starts this weekend. Merry Christmas to me! Another great episode!

Absolutely love all of the videos! There's no better way to progress the hobby and increase the success of our tanks then to base our decisions off evidence. I think it is important to consider that 'ULM' doesn't mean no maintenance. I've seen many tanks that have every gadget and new piece of equipment in an attempt to automate and reduce maintenance. Unfortunately, these pieces of equipment need calibrating, cleaning and replacing, all of which require time for them to run effectively. When it comes to plumbing, hard plumbed PVC overflow and return, however, the return pump should be soft plumbed to a PVC manifold for easy removal and cleaning. The heater just needs to be reliable. Based on your previous videos, the cobalt line is reliable and slim which should suit the limited space on each setup. The return pump should be a quality, reliable pump. I'd personally go with the Ecotech Vectra S1 on these tanks for the reliability, ease of flow control to help the effectiveness of the refugium and the ability to quickly select feed mode on the pump which can help reduce the need for additional plumbing such as check valves. The S1 also has a very small footprint. Looking forward to seeing how these tanks progress!

I’m gonna caution against *not* enclosing a chaeto-based fuge with glass baffles (as Ryan did on the softie sump). I switched over to chaeto-only filtration about four months ago and did the same thing; my reasoning was similar - I wanted to optimize flow through the whole ball. The issue that I ran into is that everything that falls off the ball collects at the intake of my return pump. I used egg crate to divide my sump, so perhaps something coarser like Ryan used in the vid would have better results. Another issue is that when that matter starts breaking down its easily sucked up by the pump and introduces unsightly particulates into the water column. I think that even that black wire media that Ryan used is too coarse to stop that. IMO the benefit of using glass baffles is that it keeps all that detritus at the bottom of the fuge and not giving you problems elsewhere. Hope this helps!

Awesome video BRS team! Love to see you hitting the cutting edge of reefing with the skimmerless setup and ozone :) For the UV, to truly evaluate it you should run it on/off on random weeks and “blind” some BRS evaluators to grade how clean the glass looks at the end of each week.

I work part time as a customer specialist for a local Petco here in West Des Moines IA (for some extra cash in the pocket outside of my day job) and recently I had a customer come in, who also maintains our reef and FO infrastructure. He stated that lateral line disease in tangs is caused by inferior carbon products and that having inferior or cheap carbon releases particles into the water volume that would clog up their sensitive pore and eventually cause the lateral line disease to occur. I have to say I find this most interesting because it is not something I would normally consider and from previous BRS posts about water quality and types of filter media used it seems to make sense. It’s also something not readily discussed and I have always wondered why these fish (even when fed properly) always seemed to get the disease. I would like to hear the feedback of the community as well as the experts from BRS so that I can better educate customers going forward and maybe help myself in the hobby as time goes on.

On plumbing a simple drainout and return will be better, without complicating it like wires inside a computer cpu.for return a good controllable pump for steady flow like vectra.and a good heater for stable temprature, from cobalt.these are suggessions from me.

I'm open to corrections, but I think running ozone and UV might be functionally redundant. As I understand they each use a different method of impairing organisms, O3 for ozonation and ultraviolet light for the other. While ozonation can oxidize and kill organisms that come in direct contact with the O3, it should also oxidize dissolved organics in a similar way, turning them into inorganics like NH3. Edit: just noticed at 13:20 -you- Ryan mentioned how O3 isn't run to keep ORP in the display high enough to kill anything undesirable without killing everything else. What about at ground zero, where the O3 meets the water in the skimmer but before the carbon removes the excess ozone? I was under the impression the "nuking" happens there.

I believe activated carbon can be overdosed. I think it's an overlooked factor and might be the cause of some issues, especially in smaller tanks. I don't have any scientific evidence to support this claim, but I definitely have witnessed it. Running high quality AC in a reactor 24/7 might cause bleaching and slow growth. Any thoughts on this?

In terms of plumbing, I don't think there's anything more low maintenance than a BeanAnimal style drain. Ive found it to be set and forget and requires the least amount of maintenance with the added benefit of being the safest way to avoid flooding. Just be sure to use a gate valve on the main drain line.

I think that ulm can’t even be claimed without an apex on there monitoring flow rates and temperature/salinity at the very least... I think hard plumbing is lower maintenance simple because you can’t generally see the funk build up like clear tubing so you tend to think all is well lol... definitely need one pump feeding all equipment even though I have been starting to buy into this it’s better to have a dedicated return and dedicated manifold pump hype... but the simple fact is 2 pumps is double the maintenance if you need ulm it’s one pump or bust. It would be nice for brs to chime in about any downsides with the 160 and having the manifold off of the return... any issues with constant beananimal adjusting or flow rates fluctuating etc.?

It might of just been how you staged the presentation. It suddenly shifted but eventually you came back to chaeto filtration. But I thought at first, it was render issue because it jumped so suddenly from one topic, to another. 22:30-22:35 It just felt odd that it changed so suddenly. Sorry for the extra work!

I'm not understanding what's the difference? If I get a zero on my salifert test how do I not take that as the bad 0 he mentions? He says his shows 0 also.

What type of fish are those at 20:30 - 20:35?
@bidnste
@bidnste 6 жыл бұрын
Orange spotted filefish or harlequin filefish, Oxymonacanthus longirostris. These are quite difficult to take care of, and I only recommend for experienced reef keepers. It can be very hard to get them eating in an aquarium setting. For a long time, it was believed that they ate SPS polyps, but these days, many folks think that they don't kill SPS. Instead, it appears they eat something else on the surface of SPS, and this grazing can irritate the corals. If you own one, you can expect your SPS polyp extension to be non-existent, but the SPS will continue to grow just fine. That being said, they are my favorite fish, and I love keeping them, if you do enough research and have enough time to devote to them. HTH.
