I used to role play a muscular, shirtless thief I dubbed "Fabio" and would run around Ultima Online pick pocketing people while repeatedly spamming "I can't believe it's not butter" (because Fabio was on those commercials at the time.) I came in three months later and players were talking about this like it was already legend. I have to say in hindsight that this was nice. It gave the game a backstory of sorts. It gave the feeling that big things beyond our control happened before most of us were even in the world yet, so the world felt a little more real, a little more important, a little more beyond any of our reaches to save or spoil.

Yeah I remember seeing the name "Lord British" when I first loaded up a private server using the accidentally (hehe) released source code with one of its version releases. And I was also like "why tf does he have a squiggly turd for an emblem?" All the names of places, the books written by players and published automatically where they'll randomly pop up in bookstores and book shelves. Thieving empty buildings was kinda fun, but the first time I soloed the Humility shrine and got that 50 yard wide circle of gold I knew I didn't care how goofy it looked, this paper doll simulator was frikkin AMAZING.

Gotcha beat. Had a personal one on one interview with the king himself as well as Lord Blackthorn who was kind enough to give me a renamed bottle called "A bottle of Spirits". Seemed like those rares sold for a ton back in those days and I had many! First time I met the king he was standing outside his castle and I thought it was some hacker so I started calling him an "F-ing hacker till a bunch of seers showed up and jailed me and told me it really was Richard. The interview was awsome though! The castle was closed up back in those days so I got a personal tour. Still remember him talking about a picture in one of the bedrooms saying it was his mother... or was it his wife... Anyway. Some may remember me, some may not. I started the Ultima online Celt guild on Catskills shard and helped start up Crossroads of Britannia with my brother. Those memories will never die.

I used to enjoy hiding in the caves, and watching stronger opponents get to low health on monsters.. as they were fighting, I would steal their reagants so they couldn't teleport away or fireball me. As they were now low on health from fighting monsters, I would attack them.. then they would keep trying to teleport away as I'm killing them. They die. I get so much loot I can't carry it, so I give it away to other people there. I did this for a few hours and at one point 10 people come to where I've been PK'ing ready to kill me. Uh oh. I didn't plan it, but I had given away so much loot and gear to other players that they came to my defense against these people. They asked me if I had been giving them items from players I killed, and of course I lied and said that the other guys were lying. Finally the battle between my team and theirr team begins. I of course instigated the fight and immediately ran off... ready to loot the battlefield. Good god, I just loved the chaos factor

@trompeloeil1389 Жыл бұрын
So, I was one of the people actually involved in this and can tell you how it happened. I was in a guild called the "Ravens of Fate" and during the last day of beta LB was giving speeches. I was in minoc, and there was a huge crowd gathered. I started punching someone and calling guards, and then everyone started calling guards and this crashed the server. When the server restarted, the developer who played "Grimli" whose job it was to set LB's invulnerability flag, forgot to do that. One of my guildmates who went by the nickname "Rainz", stole a wall of fire scroll out of someone's backpack and cast wall of fire on the area where LB was standing. He thought he was immune so he ran back and forth in it mocking them for casting spells, and that caused him to die. One of the players looted his 'costume' from his corpse which was actually a hat (or hair), and ran around being LB, until the devs summoned a bunch of demons. That's the whole and true story.

this is absolutely amazing. I have no doubt this will be looked at as intensely as we look at normal human history today. this is kind of the equivalent of the murder of caesar. just in one of our virtual worlds and on a much smaller scale. but since there's no way around us becoming even more closely connected with technology and virtual worlds, this will forever be a story of our earliest steps in these realms. one day a child will go on a virtual reality museum trip with his family on a saturday afternoon and this little piece of human history will be represented there. just like the massive wars in eve online and many other stories being written right now, online.

"some say the crash had occurred days earlier, though the source of the information is alittle unclear." That statement already set off a red flag, as anyone who played that game beta and launch could tell you those servers crashed on a daily basis (generally multiple times a day). I would also take any statement given by garriott with a grain of salt and a ample amount of skepticism. The guy is kinda known for extreme exaggeration and pathological lying, as well as having the attention span of a gold fish. Reality was the account was a GM account, he simply just forgot to type the command when logging in.

The decision to make PVP an important part of high level loot and world bosses ended up with sleazy low life PK guild monopolies barring people who refused to join the guilds from great content that should have been enjoyed by everyone. The idea of having to join a guild of PK's to enjoy content is truly the most offensive thing I can ever recall in gaming. Thankfully I was able to enjoy the "Care bare content" As he slated it to be and built real friendships with people who were not in support of a join us or die motto.
