i have a better idea. go p;laY PANTHEON RISE OF THE FALLEN you will get the same or BETTER experience with a living player base ,Pantheon was started by original everquest dev Brad Mcquade . everquest is a shadow of its old self, help Pantheon thrive and stop feeding the idiot company that killed all their projects with stupid decisions and greed

IBM and Xerox really dropped the ball on the whole personal computer thing. I love this old technology and at least that bad boy can run Lemmings. Haven't thought about that game in forever.

Everquest needs a serious UI facelift and new character models. They could have way more subs.
@computergamingyesterday2 күн бұрын
100% agree on the UI facelift. Unfortunately this seems to be difficult as multiple older MMORPGs have this problem (LOTRO, for example, being another one in desperate need of it).

At 31:30 he starts to mention why EQ was popular but not best seller. I can compare it to games that kids can play and afford, and adults that can play and afford. Lot of games are based upon a kid asking their parents to buy it for them, then comes the parents to afford the monthly subscription. EQ was able to survive by people who could afford to play the game, and buy new computers, graphics cards, routers and multiple accounts. I can say that many games with a lot of kids are limited to the kids age and lack of interest, some kids just easily get bored with a game, and a game that takes a lot of questing and understanding the lore and reading a lot, is a key factor. Yet, many in EQ PREFER that there aren't that many kids playing the game, and have a more serious minded player, one who doesn't get bored easily and gives up on a challenge of a raid or a long detailed quest. My problem after playing 19 years was the Windows OS that kept having to be changed because they no longer supported the previous OS. Remember Vista, XP, Windows 7, etc? After going through many OS systems, I gave up. EQ, is till my favorite MMORPG of all time, and when this OS Windows 10 ends support in this October, I will have to buy a new computer and I may go back and delve into going back to EQ. Although I think after 25 years, if EQ just updated the graphics from the original, keep the content, just upgrade it from the pixel demanding format to a more newer graphics, I would be happy. EQ World is fine with content and quests, just make it look more 4K, so we can enjoy it post 25 years.

Problem 1: New Frontiers Problem 2: TOA Problem 3: Removing PVP servers one year before PVP became a high appeal to live service gaming Problem 4: No Classic servers.

BG2 (and BG1) are the best RPGs ever made as far as I'm concerned. I still play through them to this day with SCS, Rogue Rebalancing and Ascension. I much prefer 1&2 over BG3.

Great job explaining what makes EverQuest so great and different from other MMOs. I started 6 boxing on Fironia Vie a few months ago and I'm having a blast. EQ has a lot of depth I agree that the leveling is much more fun than other MMOs.

I never played EverQuest back in the day but started last year after getting thoroughly burned out on WoW and LotRO. I've just been slowly molo'ing my way through the Hero's Journey content on my dwarf paladin and am having an absolute blast with the game (currently just shy of level 72). As a new player, I completely agree on all of the points you've raised here.

I forgot how bad the graphics were they seemed so amazing back then. What I remember most was "pulling" how you usually had one dedicated guy, usually a monk for feign death skill, that would "pull" the mobs to the rest of your group to have a safe place to fight so you wouldn't get adds. Not really something I see in modern games.
@computergamingyesterday9 күн бұрын
I think party dynamics in EverQuest is maybe the biggest thing modern MMOs have missed out on. I suppose that is by design because it wasn't very intuitive, but today's tank-and-spank is just not as exciting and also puts too much pressure on tanks and healers.

Thanks for this, very engaging. I started in 1999 and played for something like 15 years and my character had a ton of non-idle time on it, he still has it actually. I sometimes log on and just feel wistful wearing my online alter ego. I made one character and always played him through 19 expansions. It was a cool thing to be part of and the memories are great. I always loved being a ranger* but unfortunatley never got to meet Brad in person. I got to talk to him in game though and he was so nice. Also enjoyed meeting Absor at a con once where we had a spirited conversation about balance - I enjoyed that. Thank you for the deep dive Matthew and peace all. *who tanked Fippy, I told you guys it could be done! Keep up that CHR.

@Geminias11 күн бұрын
The coolest thing about EQ is that because we lost a lot of the individual class boards - there's more forgotten or lost lore/content in EQ than there is information on the game online. I have quest guides for bards and wizards that can no longer be found online. The rewards are level 20 and 30 appropriate but it's still cool to think about.
@computergamingyesterday11 күн бұрын
The loss of the old forums is definitely a bummer. It makes it fairly hard to research some events and details.
@Geminias11 күн бұрын
Just gonna stop you right there... Defiant Armor essentially gives you lvl 60 raid gear by lvl 15-20. As long as you stay in the old world, regardless of class, you or your merc can petty much level you to 60 in a weekend. If you want the difficulty aspect, gotta go to a progression server or p99.

You have any experience with meridian 59? I would love to see a deep dive on it one day. The only major coverage it's ever had is josh hayes. He did a very light graze of it actually. I was unaware of this because I had never heard of the game before his video about it. Its been a year or two since I have started playing it so I now see just how little effort was put into his play through. I personally would never review a game if I haven't allowed the game to consume me in some way. I have found games I considered unplayable and that the same time had long time players walk right past me in game. Apparently our thoughts and feelings are local only. I think people forget that.

This may have been the game to play 25 years ago.. but it did not age well at all.. and all I could see EverQuest giving players and myself is nostalgia.. there is no such thing as a good MMO in 2025.. unless the Dev's were to remaster it I don't see myself coming back to ever play EverQuest again.. it's clunky, bad UI placements, and awful graphics.. I guess some players seem to like playing these old polygonish games.. but for someone that's been playing for 35+ years for myself these types of games was good for it's time.. not 25+ years later..

I played EQ for 14 years until a health issue forced me away for a while, the Daybreak ruined it by not allowing me to keep my AA without purchasing a subscription. I played on P99 for a year until I grew weary of their predatory practices and gate keeping by GMs. Would love to pick it up again, but no thanks for the current options!!

I would love to however for my play style game is ruined. Pay store, mercenary, buying level 85 or 100 characters, you can sit there for day's if you're below level 100 you're not getting groups. I perfer real people teaming, exploring content not just rush to end game.
