Comparing the Godox SL60w Vs. UL60 Vs. ML60 Vs. ML60bi to figure out which of Godox's 60 watt lights is really the best for you! The Godox SL60w is cheap, but the UL60 is silent. What about light quality? Well, I set out to do a really straightforward shootout (or lightout) of four of Godox's 60 watt video lights: the Sl60w, UL60, ML60, and ML60bi
Don't forget I've got individual reviews on all of these lights on the channel, so check them out to get extra details and information on each light!

great overview video. I've been using the SL60 for a year and a half now and i'm quite satisfied with the light quality except for the unforgiven fan noise(can be mod but too much of a hassle) and ergonomics. ML60Bi is definitely the better light to start with if people could stretched their budget lil bit more.

Dang! Well done on this review 👏 👏 👏 love how through and all the B-Roll you worked into it. Live all the text graphics. This must have taken you a week to put together! Lol totally subscribing! So, I shoot a lot of documentary style interviews indoors and I'm sick of struggling to get enough light out of my 660led panel light. I'm looking for a good key light in the $300-ish range. Bi-colour would be nice (but not necessary) I just never want to struggle for light again. What would you recommend?
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! :D I do try to put alot of quality and helpfulness into them all! If you want a decent keylight around $300 that is bi-color, you might look into the Aputure 200x. I have the 200d, daylight only version, and its pretty solid. If you have concerns of fan noise and want a totally fanless option I do love my Godox UL150. The UL150 is not bi-color but is a powerful and silent light. So if you go that route you could use gels to get the bi-color aspect (which, technically, when you gel a daylight only light you'll get more intensity than if you use a bi-color light).
@MikeBabsBC
@MikeBabsBC 2 жыл бұрын
@@FellowFilmmaker OMG, you rock! Thank you so much for the quick reply! Had no idea about the Amaran line of lights. Love the 200x but it's a bit out of my price range. Do you think the 100x would be bright enough, at 34,300lux, with a softbox to use as my key light? or would the 200d be the better choice and just use gels?

@@FellowFilmmaker Well, i'm currently looking for a key light and my main concern about 60w led is that they might be too weak for some situations (in terms of light output). I was considering buying the sokani x60 rgb, because I wanted a affordable bicolor light. The sl100bi seems to be a more flexible and durable option because of the power output. The downside is that it doesn't work with batteries. So, what I really like to know is: Which one is better for a good keylight? (Sorry about my english, I'm from Brazil)
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Your english is fine, dont worry! And those are great questions! If bi-color is all you want, have you considered the Aputure Amaran 200x? Might be a nice affordable option with higher outputs (still no battery, but hey). Otherwise, you if you need battery option and high output you've got things like Aputure 300x or even panel lights like Nanlite Mixpanel 150
@VintepoucosFilmes
@VintepoucosFilmes 3 жыл бұрын
@@FellowFilmmaker The Amaran light would be a great option, but here in Brazil they are too expensive. They cost twice as much the sl100bi. Thanks for the answer though! I love your content!

I currently use the SL60W with a Photogenic Ion 120 Whr AC battery sine-wave inverter attached to the light stand and can get just over 2 hours of solid run time at 60% and no wires to trip over. Need more tun time? Get a 300 Whr inverter from amazon to run two at the same time. Sine-wave output is important! So long as the yoke is well tightened, there is no rotation experienced. I do like the pressure tightening mechanism for smoother positioning rather than the clunky style of the notched ridges, but that's just a style. Tighten down, and nothing will move or droop.

The ML60 and ML60bi can also be powered by a v mount battery. All you need is a d-tap to DC cable, V mount battery and a battery plate or clamp to attach to a light stand. You can probably use the velcro V Mount that comes with the light. This makes adjusting the light easier since you don't have the two NP batteries in the way when adjusting the downward angle. I still use the NP batteries for using the light hand held.
@FellowFilmmaker

Off-topic Photography strobe - AD300 Pro comment: Just realized I can use my ML60 handle with my AD300 Pro for quick, assisted portrait shots outdoors. Time to test if it is stronger than the yoke that comes with the AD300 which, as per my copy, needs a lot of torque when used with the AD-S85W Godox Mount softbox. Current solution for that is using it with the same softbox but within the S2 bracket.

Thoughts on my sl60's from a shoot this last weekend. I was also doing sound, and the fan never registered on my consciousness as being there. We were in about a maybe 15x30 semi-echo-y room shooting a scene with two chairs and a table. The lights were maybe about 8 feet away from the table being used as fill (I think around 50%), and fan noise never registered either with my own ears or through headphones. (For reference: audio was Samson c02 into Tascam dr-60d Mk II with Sennheiser HD 280 headphones.)

I think it's worth pointing out that the fan noise issue on the sl60w was addressed by Godox. I know the initial run had terrible fan noise, to the point that people were replacing the fan with a PC silent fan with slight modding. Godox eventually fixed the issue, not sure how, and now the sl60w's are pretty quiet. I have one that I've been using for over a year, bought May 2020, and even at higher temps fan noise is only heard if you place your ear directly up to the light.

Fantastic video. Subscribed for more content. I've tried the SL60W with a 80cm Softbox and found that to be too big for my small setup. I also tried the Amaran P60C and was quite impressed with the outcome, but I don't really need RGB on a key light. Really impressed with the compact form factor of the ML60bi. Is that a better choice than an LED panel like the P60? I don't mind a few extra bucks, but would like to keep it small, Also, any idea what is the smallest softbox I can use with the ML60bi?
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
The ML light is small and portable, I think its great for tighter situations. There is the tiny softbox that you can get with the ML60 that works: amzn.to/31CpzAQ Only issue with it is its not as diffused of a light so it will still feel a bit hard of a light. I do use it tho, all the same, when I'm in tight situations. I like a COB light over a panel light because you can shape the light a bit easier with accessories, so for that I'll usually recommend a COB over a panel light.

Regarding the fans noise of the SL60W.... if I'm using a pencil condenser (cardiod) microphone, boomed overhead, do you think I'll pick up that fan noise in my mic?
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how close it can be, but yes it still can pick it up a bit. Pencil mics can only do so much, if the fans are noise enough they will still get picked up. If you can the the mic closer to the subject than the light it might be less of an issue. In general you wouldnt hear it too badly, Id say, but if you're picky about audio then find a light that is totally silent or very quiet.

I'm a little confused about the light readings since I'm new to all of this. Is the ML60bi in Daylight settings - 100% brigther than SL60 - 100%? the reason I asked this is I'm having a hard time choosing from ml60 vs ml60bi, I could really use the bi color feature. SL60 output is actually good enough for my use case, but it would be really better if the new light that I'm going to buy is a bit brighter than SL60. Hope you can help me with my question. Thank you in advance!

If you want the easy answer, get the one you think you'll like. I use the ML60 and ML60bi the same way. If you think you'll need more power you probably aren't looking at a 60w light anyway. I'd say go with something closer to 100w or 200w that gets you the lux readings you want. I have the Amaran 200d and it's great. I like the bi-color option of the ML60 and it's wonderful as well.

Great comparison, but tbh I would have used the same exact modifier (reflector/softbox/umbrella...you name it) to measure the light output, as those reflectors are REALLY different in technology (the SL60 has a "std" silver inner coating, while the others seems to have the "mirror" coating I call it), and so one of the most important data from the comparison (the actual light output difference in lux, given that the base power is 60w declared for all of them) gets totally lost, and that's really sad.

Good comparison, although I'd love to see a more practical measurement. I have been using my minolta flash meter set for 24fps and iso 400 and metering from 1 meter to get some figures. There are a couple of basic facts of physics that you can use. because essentially light spreads out as the distance increases. At half the distance you get 2 more stops brightness and double you get 2 stops less. You can use your camera aperture scale as a calculator 1, 1.4 ,2, 2.8, 4 [5.6, 8, 11, 16 ...] so if you have a light at 2 meters subject distance at 1 meter its 2 stops brighter at 1.4 meters 1 stop brighter and 2.8 meters 1 stop dimmer and 4 meters 2 stops dimmer. The other thing to note is that you can add power together so 2 lights of equal brightness is 1 stop brighter than either light on its own. It's also worth noting 2 lights of different power at the same distance you can pretty much ignore the smaller light it adds a little but only a fraction of a stop.put it near something else and that thing will be brighter in the over all scene. If you need more information then photometrics is a good keyword. If you can't measure in practice then you can find Lux to EV tables to convert Lux to EV and calculate an F-stop value. ok so some practice at 24fps Iso 400 at 1 meter my neewer 660 bicolor panel gave me f5.6 at full power both banks the yellow and white banks on their own gave f4 which makes sense f4 +f4 = 1 stop brighter f5.6. So bare in mind that a 660 led lamp with a single color would be 1 stop brighter than the manufacturers bi color, also RGB lights are worse since the power is divided by 5 sets of leds. Ok I have a light similar to the SL60W and with its reflector at 1 meter 1 measured F16 (without about F8) The modifier you use will make a considerable difference. An interesting light i looked at was the Andoer KY-150W similar to the sl60W but lousy build quality and supports running from 2 NPF batteries but 150 watts right, wrong! I measured it at 1 meter full power in its reflector and got F8. 2 stops dimmer! There is a youtube video around that compares the KY-150W and shows the light value as visually being about the same, it's actually much worse. So if you are buying a light hopefully the manufacturer gives a lux value find a lux to ev conversion table and you can get an idea of what a light will do
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly the lux values manufactures are using are kind of fudgey, so to speak. I believe it was Gerald Undone who did a pretty decent video on light meters and measurements. But yes, there's alot to light! Thanks for sharing so much knowledge here!
