Thanks for the comparisons. I want to mention a few things over here in Europe that makes the ml60 probably the best option. The amarans are much more expensive over here than in USA, and V mount batteries are usually ridiculously expensive if you want to charge them up as well. I’d go for the ml60 with the included case.

Hey hey Ytterdahls! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! You're the second person to mention that the prices are vastly different in Europe and that the ML makes the best sense budget wise. In which case you are getting an amazing little 60w COB LED. Out of the entire lineup it is by far the most silent while remaining just as powerful. I use my ML60s quite often for close up shots and their fans are just non-existent! So ironically I was on a set for the past 2 days with Aputure lights being used, namely the P60, 200D, and 60x lights. I had my ML60bi light as well. The size of the 60x intrigued me, especially how it can fit a full Bowens mount. but then I realized even with the smaller light footprint, it was moot, as the actual Bowens mount modifiers are bigger and can’t travel as well. I can fit 2 ML60s, 4 reflectors, battery handles, batteries, AC adapters, and their smaller ADS30 softbox all in the bag for a single ML60 light. That smaller Godox mount means I can use smaller modifiers that travel well. Which is IMO the point of such a light. Having a tiny 60w light inside on a big diffuser kills the advantage of being small, as it wouldn’t make a difference even if it was bigger. But the Sidus link app, battery time estimation, v mount or NPF options, and size make a compelling case…
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Brandon! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! It sort of depends on what kinda bowens modifiers you're using. I'm not a fan of Parabolic softboxes, I'd rather use the ones that have a reflective dish inside to then bounce back to the diffusion. Those have a lower profile per size. I like Godox battery handle design a lot more than Amaran battery grip. You can rest it on a light stand between shoots while Amaran one can not. Difficult part is to find a Godox V mount battery plate in front lock in place on the handle instead of dual npf battery plate. For people with no existing batteries, Dual NPF battery doesn't make sense, not hot swappable, can't be powered by a single battery. Single V mount is larger better and about the same price once you add Dtap charger and npf separate charger.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Frank! I have a feeling with most companies using this handle design for their small 60w COB LED's. There will probably be one company where you can use on the Godox as they are all producing the same dtap voltage. So far I think iFootage, Amaran, and Sirui made a handle for their small 60w cobs?

Hey hey Ricardo! I know this is super late. With a $50 dollar difference it sort of depends on your needs. If super quite lights is what you need. Go for the Godox. If you are planning on building out your lighting kit over time. Aputure/Amaran is the better bet to go because of how well the sidus link works with the entire system. @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Jason! I have heard of the Yongnuo 100w. I have two concerns for it. Some companies are still marketing with how much watts the power brick uses and they use that in their marketing term. So a 100w in the name may really only mean that the LED is 60-75w of actual output power. If for some reason the Yongnuo is 100w of actual power, then I have my doubts that the fan is silent to dissipate the heat coming onto that small heatsink.

I purchased the Amaran 60x S (newest) recently for $199 on Amazon. I use a large bounce umbrella with diffusion for portraits, and this is what changed my mind lol. My diffusion blocks the side of the screen, and when I pull it back, I can BARELY read the screen since I'm looking at it from an angle. It wouldn't be bad if there was more than one knob, but you have to push and hold to switch temperature / power adjustments. The ML60Bi is currently on sale at $249, and I'm a PPA member, bringing it down to $236.55 before tax. I think the Amaran is going back lol
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Жыл бұрын
Hey hey Michael! That is a good point on the Amaran's operation when its up too high where you can't see the screen if you're dialing it in. The sidus thus help in these situations, but I understand you may just want to walk over there and quickly adjust it by hand. The ML60bi is similar but may be better since the screen is on the back so you can see what you're doing as it goes into the bounce. Both are great lights, the ML60bi will probably do better for you in this case.

@@TLDR_filmmaker Yeah, I sent it back and got the ML60bi! It also opens up the Godox "mini mount" which I'm slowly starting to transition to with my flashes. I've actually made a custom adapter and I'm working on the video now to go from Bowens to Godox mount. It baffles me that Godox released the Ad300/400/ML series and their only bowens solutions were the S2 bracket or permanently mounting an adapter. It's a long story, but basically, I'm only going to run battery power on location for headshots. Using the S2 bracket takes away the battery mount, so I came up with my own solution :D

I own a ton of those ridged cases, in every size they offer. they are great except for one key factor. the seal. it does not last very long. my cases stay in my tool trailer for the most part, but none of my cases were waterproof after one year. I have a few of the Milwaukee cases, which are wat tougher, and way more expensive. still waiting to see how ling the seals last. some of the design is not quite as smart as Milwaukee thinks it is. for instance if the top gets wet on some of the cases and you open it, the water goes straight into the case. just my experience with these 2 brands of cases which i have for my construction company.

@TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey again Dan! The UL60 has heft and control box going for it over the Amaran. For people that are in more commercial shooting scenarios those features will come in handy, I just wish the UL60 actually came with a case. I talked to Godox in length about their marketing because the lights that makes more sense to have cases, never have cases. The lights that don't need cases, get cases. But for all other purposes that isn't full on commercial shoot scenarios, I would say the Amaran has successfully dethroned the long favorite Godox SL60w.

It would be interesting to know the working temperature of the LEDs in both lights. If it does not have a fan, or is very quiet, it is very possible that it will work at a higher temperature, which would mean a shorter life of the LEDs.

The wellmaking is most likely a 60w COB LED Chip and they are only saying 80w because thats how much power the entire unit uses to power the 60w chip. The Godox ML is the most silent of the 60w cobs with a fan. If you already own Forza lights, then it makes sense to stay in the eco system. If you are just beginning, Amaran and Godox currently have the most mature eco system. Nanlite isn't bad, I think their newer lights are doing better. Would you still recommend the 60D if the Godox UL60 is $200? I’m debating which is best for talking head videos in a small bedroom. Could you recommend a softbox with grid as well for whichever you think is the better buy at the current price point?

Hey hey Mr. Green! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! A UL60 at that price is very nice and I would recommend to go for that instead. Mainly because its very robust in its built, fanless. If you need to travel with it, it unfortunately does not come with a case. However if its just in a small bedroom for talking heads. This shouldn't be a problem. As for soft boxes with grids. Godox has some great ones. As well as a company on Adorama called EZ Glow (I believe). Look for bowens softboxes that are kind of like umbrella's where the spokes are already attached and click into place. These are nice and easy to setup and tear down. Pricing between softboxes are all pretty standard depending on what size you want. Usually people find a 30+ inch to be a nice one for a soft look. 20ish inches are ok, but for me I like to at least have a 30ish inch. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey Hey TL;DR guy! I have been waiting for this video for a while, but I already bought one. The case seems to be the foam insert usually inside a box, but with a handle. Not sure if I'll use it again. The mounting system is interesting, but I wish it had a pin similar to consumer video cameras to keep it from rotating, because I found when I add the NPF batteries, it throws off the balance, and it can start to unscrew. I am using a Neewer NPF plate with a D-tap cable from a GVM instead of the adapter included because the Neewer adapter has a battery level indicator on it. I have not updated the firmware yet because I have to sign in first which is lame. I agree, the fan is close to silent, my Desview monitor's fan is louder! I hope to travel a bit more again in the future, so this will be a great solution, especially because it's light enough to be mounted to a travel lighting stand. I'm surprised you didn't mention the extreme hot spot with the included reflector. I haven't tried running the light on the NPF batteries to see how long it runs, I assume you were using NPF-970. Hope to join you on a live stream again at some point, or maybe on Discord! OK, that's enough from me before it gets... TLDR.

Hey hey again Dave! As I use this light more there is most likely going to be a point where I might encounter the same light rotating in its mounting system. But I also know I would probably just use a c-stand boom holder thing (can't remember the name at the moment lol, grip head?). That should help a little bit. The reflector bowl...many what can I say about that reflector bowl. When I saw it I was just shaking my head wondering when would I ever use something like this that has such a define hotspot. I guess it got to the point where I just didn't talk about it cause I'd never use it. I do need to get some more live streams going, hopefully soon!

08:50 "if you know you want to use Bowens modifiers"... well, you better know you want to buy one additionally as well, as you don't get a modifier with the Amaran. I bought the ML60 before the Amaran came out, and now look into a second light (bi-colored). If you add the additional costs for case, batteries and a (bowens) modifier, the Amaran is actually not worth it for me. I will get the ML60bi, as the ML60 performs well and came with a nice case, batteries AND a pretty good modifier. P.s.: still love your review, as usual :-) great work!

Wait hang on, ML 60bi comes with a Bowen mount modifier? I thought they use Godox proprietary mount and their diffuser is hot in the center by a large margin.

@@frankluo230 no no, it comes with a modifier. Not with a bowens modifier. I did not see any reviews about it, I just use it, and it's perfectly fine for me 🤷🏻‍♂️ but this is my first real video light and I have no comparisons. Seems decent though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey hey again Wullemaha and Frank! The full ML60 kit that has the batteries and modifier is definitely a nice deal. For me that specific softbox it comes with is on the smaller side for what I typically use and secondly it uses the Godox Flash style mount instead of a bowens so I can't use it on another light. That's part of the reason why I don't really talk about the available kits because I think its better to have more compatibility with a family of lights in someones kit.

@@TLDR_filmmaker oh yeah totally makes sense if you already have stuff (e.g. bowens mount related)! I totally agree. For me personally, starting with zero light, the set was amazing 😁

Great comparison. If both the prices are same which one you'd pick? (India, both daylight has same price point). My doubts #1. 90% of video light reviews are single talent inside the frame & “cinematic” most of face lit up & rest shadow and colour lights on background, sometimes hair light. Is this enough to shoot 2 or 3 people in a single frame (music band). Or the only solution is to have higher watt (like 150?) Or 2 lights on each side? #2. Are they meant to shoot for short hours? I went to a shooting spot once (to deliver food) & the only godox they use is of the tubelight. They said they would never even think of getting a godox cob/panels. The beginner light they use is aputure 300dii.

Hey hey Gokul! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In terms of the music band. This really depends on the shots and locations you're in. If you're indoors with control of ambient lighting. The 60w would be enough if you are not using diffusion. However if your composition is very wide, then you may want to have more power. In my opinion a 150w class LED would be your better option so that you have extra power if needed. #2 These lights are meant to shoot for long hours. They have fans inside to keep the heat down. Tube lights are very different if you are to use them for very long extended period of time as they do not dissipate heat as well depending on their design. Hope this helps! Hey hey Mikhail! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I do not have any experience with the Colbor CL60. It is built anything like their CL100, it will do the job just fine. It's build quality, fan, and user interface would be the major differences. Otherwise LED chips these days are all very high in color accuracy. You're more so paying for ecosystem and design. I dont understand why the other lights hold double as long with batteries. That means the other lights are using just half of the wattage? Does that mean the other leds are much more efficient? Or does that mean the other lights are maxed out at 50% lux if used with batteries? Please someone explaining that.

Hey hey Foxmania! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! From what I could tell, the lights are all at 100% power when using dual NPF Batteries. There could be a number of reasons why the Amaran has a lower battery life compared to the rest. My best guess is that the Amaran requires a higher sustained voltage compared to the others before it shuts down. This could be to protect the internals as well as the NPF Battery itself. The other brands may have a lower sustained voltage tolerance allowing it to the drain the battery further. Which in some cases could damage the battery. Thanks again for stopping by! How many mAh does a "generic" NP-F battery have?

Hey hey Sonstwer! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! They are kind of all over the place and not necessarily accurate. My generic 6500 mAh NPF lasts longer than another generic 7800 mAh . I feel 6800 mAh for the generic NPF970 is about right for the average. Thanks again for stopping by! wouldnt u say the battery run times are a bit unrealistic? then again i guess its worst case scenario. i would imagine if youre full blasting the lights you probably should be wall powering them at that point anyways

Definitely worst cast scenario. I prefer to test it this way so I have an idea of what is my absolute battery limit. In general I think most people won't be operating off of batteries unless they are filming in the woods or something. In those cases, the worst case scenario test will be helpful for them :)

Hey hey truth x2! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In theory you can buy the ML60 bowens adapter and then use a smaller type fresnel. If you are using larger fresnels the bowens adaptor may not be able to handle that weight. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey MojoPapi! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! If you are talking about the aputure "spotlight" mount, that should work with the Amaran. If you meant a Fresnel mount for the Amaran, then it may not work because fresnels need to be a certain distance from the COB to work effectively. All fresnels from different companies are a little different. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Bill! Absolutely. At this point after this video has been out for awhile. If anyone asks me what light is better. Exactly what you said. Pick a team and go with it. Aputure and Godox have the longest track record to go with for the long haul. Aputure if you want ecosystem consistency. Thats pretty much it these days.
