This mission is considerably less impossible under v88 or v89 but for your enjoyment here is me trying to do this mission with a bug that makes it freaking impossible.

Historically Monitor had lousy firing arcs as the Dahlgren guns were mounted quite low in the turret so it's no wonder you can't fire over the wheel house. We need a decent game with Ironclad period ships.

I know the bug is now fixed, but I can't help but scream at my computer how you should have set the turret to zero armour. Since it wasn't registering, why bother wasting tonnage and funds on armour that doesn't exist?

i just did this mission and completed it first try i went with the armor option rather than guns option and was able to get a lot of armor on the guns they did not get pend even once but i had the front conning tower destroyed more than once. and the 12" guns with just heavy shells pen just fine

Yup that’s how the mission should go - I recorded this when there was a bug where your turret armour wasnt counted!

I cheesed the casemates ironclad mission, last night. I built 2 monitors [sloped hull] with 9knt speed. Used one to get in front of their monitor and stop it. And strolled up next to the side of it with the second and let them both broad side point blank while I looked at stuff on my phone lol. It helped that I guess their monitor has a minimum firing distance because he quit firing when they got close. I hated this mission and don't feel bad cheating it

I think it was added as an April fools thing, and ended up staying in. Every other part of the game goes no earlier than what, 1890 or something?

Because that is also an important part of history, the first time where armoured ships tried to fight each other, and a period where armour was much more advanced than gun technology.

Tactical air assault balloons, there actually was a batshit crazy idea to use hit air balloons with men armed with rifles and grenades to attack people but that idea was quickly shot down when they realised how quickly they'd get shot down 😂

I just fought this, my first volley made him take water and list to one side, his guns couldnt hit me so i just sat there and lobbed rounds until it exploded

There's a historical inaccuracy here. Tnt invented in 1863 but its use as an explosive didnt come about fully until 1891. So the union and the confederacy wouldn't have used it in war.

You should just try to put the main tower at the back of the gun, then if the ship can, do a full reverse so they can't shoot with the majority of their firepower also keep the distance and just sniping then, you will just burn to death

Bolted armour: you hit a bolt, the other half of the bolt becomes a vicious projectile, ricocheting through the interior. Then there's spallation. And what happens if you hit near the edge, or corner, or previously hit areas of a plate? Yep, you may get lucky.

Mount the main guns on top of the ship instead of in the casemates. Great firing arcs.

Can't help but feel that you should have sat off the bow or the stern once you had crippled them to reduce the number of guns they could bring to bear.

You been better off following the enemy ship firing all the time at his back as I believe it did not have a gun mounted at the back, just turn as he turns and he be toast, you can fire at him he can't at you? if he turns to fight just turn and follow him!

I actually beat that one the first time I played it. Wasn’t as hard for me personally as the Monitor mission.

Why didn't you put the funnel in the middle? I think that would help with the fire arc

Also maybe what they're over-pening is the top of the main tower, which if you look closely does catch on fire and get shot at. I think what's happening is they shot the mesh above the tower which in turns catches fire and over-pen and then somehow leads to flash fire, because when they over-pen the damage they dealt is so low (thus I come with this conclusion)
