I love what Aqara is doing. I can’t stand seeing all of the devices sitting around, and the battery powered stuff, and wall warts. We need these things to be hidden or mostly hidden.

My wife's hair curlers don't have an on/off switch. You plug them in and they turn on. You unplug them and they turn off. The issue is to remember to plug them in at the appropriate time and remember to unplug them when done. Therefore, I installed a ConnectSense in-wall outlet and plugged her curlers into it. I put an Aqara contact sensor on the shower door. Whenever the shower door is opened in the morning, a scene called Shower Time turns the outlet that the curlers are plugged into comes on for 20 minutes. So when she gets into the shower, the curlers preheat. When she gets out of the shower, they finish heating up and by the time she is ready to actually use them, they are ready to go. This way she doesn't have to remember to plug and unplug them. I have an Aqara Temperature and Humidity sensor in both of our bathrooms. Whenever the humidity gets above 75%, the exhaust fan turns on for 10 minutes. The fan is controlled by a Lutron Caseta light switch. I have motion sensors in our second bathroom that doesn't have windows. They turn on the ceiling light and the vanity light depending on what part of the bathroom you are in. They are set to turn off after 20 minutes. These lights are also controlled by Lutron Caseta light switches. I have Aqara leak sensors under my three bathroom sinks and under my Garden Tub in the Master bathroom. I also use these under my other sinks, hot water heater, refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer, and HVAC air handler.

What a great video Brad! You inspired me to smarten-up my elderly parent’s bathroom but had no idea how to make the motion sensor NOT turn the lights off while someone is inside the shower, out of the sensors detection reach. A door & window sensor did the trick as you very cleverly demonstrated. Lights turn on after a certain time in the evening ONLY if it’s dark enough (below 4 lux) and lights turn off after 3 minutes of not detecting motion, EXCEPT when the door is closed (like you’re likely to have it when showering) After midnight lights turn on very dim and turn off after 1.5 minutes when a late night visit to the bathroom is required. Sadly Aqara doesn’t ship to Mexico so I’m using Philips Hue devices but everything works flawlessly!

A water leak sensor should be connected to an automatic water shut off valve actuator. Both my sister and dad had leaks costing them oulble digit thousands. No alarm would have saved them. An alert depends on someone being around and wastes time. Sense water, the water is immediacy shut off to the whole house. Cheap insurance and is the original reason for me getting my smart home system 10 years ago. The system I have cost $100, though I am about to upgrade to a more powerful actuator with backup power for about &240. Requires no plumbing if you have a 90 degree ball valve (very common). Some like the Econet bulldog. I currently have the dome actuator.

Brad, this video is totally great. I keep coming back to it as I am working over the entire house, but really feel like the bathrooms were a great place for automation. I have a question and a suggestion. First, the question. I have a few Eve Home devices that have been somewhat obviated by recently adding 5 more smart sensors on the EcoBee. Do you know if the Eve devices are sensitive enough to use the humidity as a way of telling the lights to not shut off because someone is in the shower? As we do not have an air tight house (which sounds utterly brilliant for Canadian Winters and efficiency), windows are often open especially during our summer and I’d suspect that can appreciably reduce the room’s humidity build up. Both of my showers use shower doors, so some Eve door sensors are a decent back up. As a recommendation, this is a delayed follow up to your request for new ideas on videos we would like to see in 2022. Given your wholistic conceptualization of the bathroom, I think many of us would benefit from seeing this done for all of the major rooms in the house. In particular, the kitchen and front/backyard with this wholistic approach would be awesome! I can see using a soul or major vendor as a partner, like you did here with Aqara. I can also see other rooms requiring a balanced approach. I also recognize that you can’t do one of these even once a month, as the thought, planning, set up, and filming will take time. But just the idea of a series like this would make me giddy 😀. Keep up the fanatic work, Brad.

Don't need a switch for "always on" functionality, that can be done by wiring correctly to bypass switch. After that the switch can be added into the mix, basically connect the line/neutral to the switch but don't have a load connection. This would allow you to still make automations with the top button.

I’m a smart home geek in Canada, but I’ll tell you two instances where simple is better. In my bathrooms I have a $30 switch with humidity sensor that I never touch. Comes on when needed. Also in closets, a simple $30 led light with motion sensor from Amazon. Simple.

As a recent user of Aqara Smart switch (wired) - no neutral I have a question. If you make the switches wireless (decoupled), you can't turn off the power supply (replay) physically. But then if you want to control it in automation (Apple homekit) the only 2 actions you get is the switch turn or OFF - But this in turn will turn off the relay itelf. Sp how do I control "Switch presed" event from a Aqaura switch, and control nanoleaf ?. Weirdly the Aqara app, only sees Aqara products, and no other "Matter" products even when I upgraded the M2 hub to matter.

@@TheBradLloyd Hi Brad, sorry I should have been more specific, I was talking about the wall switch. I turned on the wireless mode so that it no longer toggles the power, but the press of that button appears to only be exposed in the aqara app, whereas it stays a normal switch only in the home app. I also have wireless mini switches but was hoping to control these lights with the switch, but if that's not possible I may just use another aurora.

I have it so i can control the lighting to my liking by just either single pressing or double pressing. Every time i single press my button from an off state, it turns to 100%. If i were to single press again while at 100%, it goes down to 80%, and so on in 20% increments. Same for double pressing but that just makes it 20% brighter. Long press turns off the light. Double press while in an off state starts the lights at 5%. Only issue you can run into is if someone sets the brightness through the app. But i have it so i can long press and start over basically… That’s a lot.
