So, I'm an AH-64E pilot. I hear nothing but endless praise from ground units, especially Infantry (and cav scouts that get too far in over their heads). We're basically the A-10's less heard of cousin- we still have a 30mm cannon, it just doesn't go BRRRRT.

But the helicopter can video record the daytime fights in high resolution color. The army could make some money back for troops wanting videos to show off to their friends. One could get those, "Hey look, that's Uncle Jessy" moments.

Gosh I remember about the Comanche. Found out about it when I had the old Comanche Gold simulator game. Game was fun but damn the real counter part was horrible. Sacrificing firepower and protection for the pilot and gunner just for stealth. Although there was a variant that included external wings for additional firepower it still wasn’t the greatest.

Another terrific video, thanks. As a Vietnam veteran 11B4P, I still have a interest in what is happening in todays military. I have looked at a lot of gunship videos especially the night ones and have watched as heavy guns 20mm/30mm, which were developed for a war that never happened,so far, are wasted in shooting at enemy infantry. I would think that a fifty caliber minigun would be more practical as the gunships could carry many more rounds and saturate the enemy at a cheaper cost?? Your opinion ??

AH-64 can also carry AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles on the ends of the wings. It can also increase its 30mm load and fuel load by utilizing a internal fuel, and ammo mag called a Internal Auxiliary Fuel System. 300 extra round plus 98 extra gallons of fuel
@islesfan186
@islesfan186 2 жыл бұрын
The Apache lost its ATA capability over a decade and a half ago when CMWS sensors were installed on the wingtips It’s also not 300 extra rounds with the Roby tank. That replaces the standard 1200 round ammo mag. You are getting that extra 100 gallons of fuel, but now only limited to 300 rds of 30mm I should clarify that I am talking about American Apaches. Dutch, British, Israeli, etc apaches may still have that capability, but I don’t believe they do

"effective" range is around 1200 meters and even then, the rounds are all over the place due to the "relatively" short barrel of the M230 4:08 Only the main rotor blades can sustain 23mm rounds, the rest of the chopper can be disabled with 7.62mm ammo 4:12 2,500 pounds?... try 11,000 pounds empty :)

Thanks for the briefing on the AH-64 Apache. I flew the beast from 1987 through 2005 (my last deployment in the guard). The new advancements in the platform are amazing. And it is a robust and very survivable platform. Our tactics have evolved from a hover and shoot to a run and gun approach due to aircraft survivability battle field issues like manpads and simple RPG's. You briefly mentioned the cancelled RAH-66 scout/light attack helicopter. I flew it's competitor the "McBell" during the LHX (Light Helicopter Experimental) fly off. The 6500 lb. and $6.5 mill requirements were doomed from the start. It was an outstanding conception/competition from both sides of the competition: Boeng/Sikorsky--"BoSky" McDonnel Douglass/Bell--"McBell" The capabilities of both aircraft were amazing and would have saved numerous scout pilots lives in their viet nam aircraft (OH-58 kiowas) in follow on conflicts from the first gulf war to Somalia, to Afghanistan. It is a crime that the RAH-66 was cancelled to put the money to the M109 155mm self propelled howitzer. Those machines were amazing to fly , especially at night/aided (both eyes) in the way they reduced the pilots overload (HOTAS) and allowed you to fly NOE (nap of the earth) at very low altitudes; even in mountainous terrain. Those aircraft were supposed to supplement the Apache and operate well forward in areas the Apache would be seen. That's the reason their armaments were carried internally. My Idaho guard unit (AH-64a) replaced an OH-568D unit in Bosnia for peace keeping because those antiquated but supposedly sufficient airframes couldn't do the mission that the LHX/RAH-66 helicopter could have. Best regards, "Snake"

I'm planning to head into the Army as a pilot myself, likely as a Blackhawk though. as fun as being an attack helo pilot sounds, that also seems to be the most dangerous pilot role given its frontline usage. then, after I leave the Army, I plan to be an EMS helicopter pilot. when I'm old, I retire and become an instructor.

Actually the Mi38NM Havoc is the most powerful and well protected attack helicopter on the planet. It carries at larger payload, more advanced stand-off weapons and has a higher protection against small arms fire. It can also control drones. The only area where the Apache might be better is in sensors, but that parameter is negligible as the MI28NM can do everything the Apache can.

Fun fact: in the early 80s "they who complain about everything" claimed that our defense products were too sophisticated and were incapable of actually operating in an actual conflict. When the US invaded Panama there was a report that an AH-64 was not available for ops due to excessive humidity in some black box. At a press conference President Bush was asked what he had to say about the fact that soldiers got a blow dryer to make the black box operate. He responded "I think that shows the initiative and competence of the members of our armed services." Systems that the left claimed would never work: AH-64 M-1 Abrams M-2 Bradley DIVAD (ok so they were right) F-15 C-5 B-17

Several other countries have developed laser guided 70mm rockets that fit into the hydra rocket pods for the Apache and Cobra, then you can fit 4 rocket pods of 19 rockets each, for a total of 76 rockets you can slap onto your Apache (or Cobra) helicopter and then rain precision guided rockets accurately up to effectively 5 kicks out at high altitude, hows that for target saturation? (Edit: fixed range of rockets)
@joelau2383
@joelau2383 4 жыл бұрын
Wrong, 8km and 11km are the range of Hydra 70 lunched by speeding fixed wing aircraft, not APKWS from helicopter. The max range of APKWS launched by helicopter at high altitude is around 5 km. APKWS is actually Hydra 70 with a laser sensor and wing control section at the front, it is heavy and air friction is much larger, so the theoretical range range is much less than conevetional Hydra 70 rocket. Besides, APKWS directly fly toward the laser point instead of using ballistic trajetory. It also reduces the range. Moveover, the low manuverability seriously restrict the effectiveness on platforms other than helicopter. For example F-16 need to lock the target through FLIR and then dive to point the rocket pod to the target before fire. This kind of attack maneuver for guided weapon is just dumb and it is not suitable for fixed wing UAV.
@bowlingman8931
@bowlingman8931 4 жыл бұрын
Joe Lau thanks for correcting me about the range of the rockets, I didn’t know the range difference, however the exact same tactic for firing APKWS from a fixedwing craft is used with the normal Hydra 70, not to mention the fact that UAVs aren’t designed with Hydra 70 use in mind. Also direct following of the laser isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it saves a lot of money and weight to not have ballistics computers whenever the weapons system is as disposable as a hydra rocket, and the sheer fact that it is guided at all is an invaluable asset to helicopter ordnance, the capability to go from being able to carry 16 missiles, to 72 laser guided rockets instead cannot be understated when it comes to putting effective and accurate fire on enemy ground targets.
@joelau2383
@joelau2383 4 жыл бұрын
@@bowlingman8931 About the dive maneuver before launch, if you compare it to other "low cost" guided weapons like GPS or laser guided bomb that can be drop and hit the target without drastical maneuver, this APKWS is really not necessary and suitable to fix wing fighter and UAV. No, the reason that it can only directly follow laser is not the lack of ballistics computers, but the fact that they add weight of sensor and control section on the front without changing the aerodynamic design to compensate. Yes, this is a low cost solution to make a guided weapon for helicopter and rotor wing UAV, but it seriously restricts the future expansion for other platform. For example, some countries designed similar guided rocket or low cost missile from blank. It doesn't have ballistic computer either, but it has a wide angle laser sensor and better maneuverability. When it is launched to hit short range target, the fix wing UAV can keep level flight while the rocket can track laser the whole time through the wide angle sensor and turn toward targets quickly because of better maneuverability. When it is launched to hit long range target, the rocket will maintain natural ballistic trajectory to extend the range for a calculated time and the laser guidance system then take over control at the final approaching. This kind of low cost weapon can be directly apply to all kind of future platform like unmaned surface vehicles.

But..when you tell me the army is looking for a helo for city use with a rotor of 40 meters I think I need to call shenanigans on on you. That's between a 737 and a C130 wingspan. That thing would be bigger than one of those Soviet monster MI 26s from Diehard 5. As cool as it might be I don't think it's what we want. I'm guessing the rotor size would need to be smaller than the Apache and your production crew said meters when they meant feet. Nice video, but one mistake: the helicopter doesn't weigh 2500 pounds (a little over 1100 kg) which would be the weight of a small car. That is the weight of just the protection. An empty Apache weighs over 11,000 pounds (about 5000 kg), a fully loaded one (max takeoff weight) about 23,000 pounds or over 10.000 kg
