Awhile back I heard from a source I trusted that Extreme Pro was just a rebadge of other film stocks through the years and I believed that source. However, I just had a great conversation with Jeff over at Photo Warehouse regarding Ultrafine Extreme Pro. He assured me that Extreme Pro is NOT rebadged and that it has been sourced from the same supplier since it was improved over regular Ultrafine eight or so years ago. The emulsion is also not available in any other name anywhere else. This is very encouraging to me and I've never been more glad to be wrong, as I really love this film.

Thanks for this comparison! My favorite film has been Rollei 80s for quite some time now, I'm glad it still made it into my top 2 during the blind test part. I'm also constantly annoyed by the curling Rollei films, but they have one major advantage for me: a clear base, meaning I can (and usually do) process them as B&W slides.

Took the blind test and it seems that Delta100 is my favorite, I've never shot it before, but I will soon. Thanks for doing the hardwork on this. It very good to know the comparisons of film stocks the way you did. note: the first blind test you did was also very helpful.

Thanks for the hard work. Ultrafine and FP4 were close as my top 2. Tmax and Delta came out with almost the identical score for me. Shows me that this blind test and the spreadsheet are pretty accurate in assessing personal preference. Based on this I just ordered a bunch of FP4+. Looking forward to a new emulsion in my quiver!

First of all, thank you very much for making these useful and thorough videos. I'm a photographer that uses film for his work all throughout the process, meaning that I finish it printing in my darkroom and later on scanning the prints. Probably most of your viewers work your way (shooting film and scanning it directly) and it's perfectly fine. But I miss seeing how these films work in the enlarger. Maybe setting up a contrast filter 2 and making consistent prints, so we can analyze the actual contrast and grain of each film on paper. I would love to see this process on one of your next videos. My clear preference here was TMax 100. It's good to know what to get. The delta 100 did all right too. I only wish Fuji's Acros II had been out at the time you made this, that's also a film I've loved when I've seen it and would have dearly liked to compare.

The trick with all Foma films is that they're really a stop slower than the box says. 100 is really 50, 400 is really 200. Expose a stop more, develop about 10% less than recommended. Abracadabra, less grain and better shadow detail.

This is all about right, I'd even drop the dev time a bit more than 10%, depending on what you're using. Foma is a budget film yes, but not so beginner friendly due to its sensitivity in exposure and developing.

I would like to point out that the choice of developer has huge effect on any film (except Acros😀) Devolpipng the same film in Rodinal will give totally different results than developing it in Xtol, ( these two are rather extreme examples effectwise) the effect is drastic in tonality, sharpnes, grain, and even film speed ( shadow detail)

Thanks, you saved me a lot of money and testing. In general they were all sufficiently similar that there is not a ton of difference between any of the seven films unless you want to focus on plus or minus a small bit. I did like E, F, & G but that is because I tend to like more contrast than a flat tonal distribution from white to black. This is all very subjective and being a painter I find its not the material so much that matters, rather its what you do with it so any of the 7 would work fine for me.

BTW. regarding the grain in Fomapan 100 someone said that under no circumstances use Rodinal developer if the film is scanned. He gets excellent results using Tetenal Ultrafin 1+20 - 15 minutes. Don't know how this translates to the Kodak developer, but as you got unpleasant graininess, then is not a good choice as developer for this film. Also, its own Foma chemicals might make a difference.

This was very nice. My preference when watching was for Delta 100, FP4 and Ultrafine Extreme. I also correctly surmised which one was TMax. I didn't like it nearly as much in this comparison because of how flat it was, but from my own experience, TMax when developed with Rodinal is just gorgeous...Rodinal adds a bit of that punch and sharpness back, while maintaining very fine grain and beautiful tonality with TMax. Need to get some Delta 100 though.

What a great video, and I can only imagine the time and effort you put into this! There were a few surprises and a few not so much. I think I had a different favourite in each picture, but my own go to - fp4 - turned out to be the only film I liked in every single shot. Delta really surprised me.. I didn't expect to like it at all but it was probably just behind fp4 as my favourite overall. I do really love that fomapan grain... Apparently it's not to everybody's tastes 🤣 My single favourite result was actually retro 80 in the hat pic, the contrast range was just phenomenal to my eye. The 80 also did a splendid job on the roof of the old house. It was also the worst for me in some other instances. Tmax really left me cold and was easily my least favourite overall... I guess the takeaway is that there is no best film, it's all about the scene and how a given film renders those particular colours and the light in that precise moment, and more importantly how the viewer responds to the qualities of the resulting image. There's always something new to discover with film. 🙂

Clearly a lot of effort, money, and time been put into this endeavour. 9:50 Which is discontinued. The more research do coming back after forced five year hiatus the more find how much prices skyrocketed and disappointingly missed out on some good to great films. At least coming back now, can stock up a few before gets more.

I have watched a few of your comparisons. After 1 year of testing on my own as well, I ended up choosing FP4+. A couple reasons. 1, I find it to be very consistent. I always seem to get the look I want. 2, the look is very uniform and allows me to have the freedom to edit in post for a variety of looks. 3, the price and availability. Seems I can buy it anywhere and just choose the lowest prices. 4, it is available in 135, 120 and 4x5 sheet film. So I can now have a similar result from all my cameras and can also develop 135 and 120 at the same time. As far as developers go, I tried just 4. HC110 ( Didn't like my inconsistent results), Ilford DDx ( was good but too expensive and short lived). Rodinal (love it for 120 and 4x5 but not 135) and my final choice is XTol 1:1. I am very happy with the consistency, the tonality and the subtle classic grain. In 4x5, especially, FP4+ and XTol are amazing!!! To get more value from my Xtol when developing 4x5, which uses 1L in my tank for just 6 frames, I recently started mixing 500ml of Xtol 1:1 with 500ml of Rodinal 1:50. The results are fantastic and I am saving money. Thanks for all your hard work. It made my hard work.....less hard! Peace!

Quite the lovely comparison of the various ones, and I love how additional shots were included as well! It seems that E was my main one that regularly drew my eye (so FP4), as I seemed to like what it offered up... And that's from someone who honestly has no idea what their thoughts on black and white photography are since they've never taken any photos that way ^_^;;;; It was definitely the one that "stood out" to me and pretty much shouted "hey, give me a try, you know you want to". Definitely love that such a comparison was done, and hopefully, when time and funds permit, a colour film one will also be available... Although I'll playfully say I don't know how you'll sneak CineStill into a 100 speed comparison since it's only available in 50 or 800 :P

I don't think so. Kentmere makes a 35mm 100 and 400 speed film, but not 120. Ultrafine Xtreme comes in 35 and 125, and they are definitely the same emulsion. And no, I don't think Ultrafine repacks Lucky either. Doesn't make sense as it's definitely coated/finished by Harmon.

Denae & Andrew true but that's just how it's cut off the master roll. Kentmere is an Ilford product as well just the cheaper brand, either way the Xtreme films are awesome. The plus version is totally different and had a bunch of problems with consistency and bleeding from the backing paper onto the film.

Right. Harmon, technically. In my 400 speed, 35mm guide I looked at those, and I just didn't see them as close enough. And it would seem odd that Kentmere would not create 125, but sell both 35 and 120 to be rebadged by Photo Warehouse. I really think Ultrafine is something else. Maybe some other European film which was discontinued, but who Photo Warehouse and Harmon partnered to bring as a budget film to America. But who knows.

I have just recently started photography again after a gap of about 11 years, mainly due to failing eyesight which Mede it difficult for me to use a camera. Recently there has been some improvement in eyesight, so I have got my cameras out of store and am trying again. I collect cameras, I have about 50, and some are much more difficult for me to use than others. I like Hartman’s budget film, Kentmere 100, but that is only available in 35 mm, so could not have been included in your list. I have to say that I’ve never really liked medium format, though I did use a couple of TLRs at work many years ago. I like the small size and light weight of 35 mm cameras, and the range of movements and slow working of large format ones, and for me medium format ones seem to fall into a gap in the middle.

Using box speed and the same developer only compares How the films do in those specific circumstances. Many black and white films benefit greatly from certain developers, and may not be best at box speed in a given developer. The Foma films in particular do t get anywhere near box sped in most developers. And will look a lot better once you get that dialed in.

Hey, Foma is great if you use the right developer. He complains about grain but i shot foma 100 and developed in Foma Excel developer, no visible grain in 8x10 prints , so its up to developer. I always shot box speed. so DEVELOPER makes a trick.

Has anyone tried 120 Shanghai B&W film recently? I use their 4x5" film and like it. The reason I am asking is I want to order some 120 Shanghai to try but not if they still are having trouble with the backing. If you are not aware, a few years ago Shanghai had a problem with the ink on the paper backing that would transfer to the emulsion of the film while it was all rolled up. The ink of the words and numbers would soak in and not come out during development! In the final B&W prints, you could faintly read those words and numbers. Thank you. Denae & Andrew also, more Bronica ETRSi videos please. There are a ton of these on eBay for super reasonable prices. I feel like a lot of folks are skipping this great camera because a lot of youtubers talk about the hasselblad and Pentax cameras. I love my etrsi.
