I totally understand the concern about "putting all your eggs in one basket" with a shack-in-a-box radio that covers all modes all bands. If it fails, it's likely that the 2m/70cm OR 6m-160m board will fail. There are certainly things that can take the whole radio out, but most of the broken 706s I've seen still have one side kicking along. Really good video (Y)

Great info, thanks Nick! I own a mkIIG and have an older 706 like yours that I might buy as well. Just ordered the Signalink for my TS 440 and plan to get another one for my field kit to run the 706s. And some faraday bags!

Two comments. First, have you tried some of the hardened power system cases? You are kind of lacking a power and recharge capability with that box. Second, have you looked into using a $20 SDR receiver and piping the audio into fldigi? Currently I'm using an rtl-sdr, DB cable digital virtual audio cable and fldigi. Took a little while to get the settings right but it seems to work. It's received only, but it's way cheaper than a full-on rig.

@@viaoutdoors I'm currently using a Windows 10 laptop. I'm not familiar with the chrome books. Technically a SDR is a ultra wideband receiver. The RTL SDR I'm using is capable of listening in on all the ham bands without any gaps all the way to 3ghz; if memory serves me correctly. This also includes all the am and fm broadcast bands and 800mhz P25 police and EMS bands. I believe it's possible to download SAT information and broadcast tv as well. I haven't tried the latter yet. Currently I'm mostly interested in using the system in testing my 440mhz data transmission ranges and as a cheap receiver for people without a full ham rig. We're literally talking about $30 to receive data transmissions from a central location and over the air broadcast.

That radio is discontinued, do you have a different recommendation?

Yaesu FT-891 is another option. I have them both. Don't worry about discontinued if it is in good shape and works well.

Curious, what do you use to power that 706 in the case? I bought a 706 but fear I can rarely use it full power due to the current usage on that monster.

How do you set the radio you have to accept input from the accessory port? It just works automatically?

I just dont get the part with digital ham radio. When there will be no power and internet available , digital standarts will be useless.

The 706 is a clumsy radio with doffivuly to understand repeater functions for 2 meter.

I have had a 706 for some time. Programming a repeater is s breeze, I find.

My day hike HF go kit is 12 lbs, but includes basic survival stuff like first aid, shelter, fire kit, etc... Check out the RaDAR challenge. radarops.co.za/ The next one is April 4th. I've been a member of AmRRON, ever since Nick mentioned it in another video and I do recommend it.

EMP proof bag. Why? What's the point? What abnormal mindset comes up with an EMP proof bag.

Since this is a survivalist video channel, your ignorance is strange.
