I and my wife live at our ranch here at Lake Thunderbird in Norman Oklahoma, where we raise Horses and Cattle. I was the Sr. Board member of the "Norman Round Up Club". My Cowboy Boots are MANDATORY out here. We have Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes, Pygmy Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Cottonmouths and other things that like to bite. A GOOD pair of Cowboy boots are a 100% requirement here!......( killed 3 Pygmy Rattlers just last year, killing one of them by stepping on it with my boots )...........My most comfortable and favorite boots are my Rattlesnake Boots. Extremely soft leather, but very durable and bite proof (so far LOL)

Rex Krueger said it best that the old school traditional ways usually work best for hand tool work. Craftsmen didn’t waste time, money, effort, or materials if they were any good. They found the best ways they could to produce the best work they could with tools, jigs, and processes that just worked over time. It looks like y’all blend quality, new materials (leather soles with small lugs for example) with traditional techniques. It’s mesmerizing to watch you both killing it at your craft. Thanks for this insight on Tony Lama boots! I would definitely use those lugged soles on mine. I bought my first pair of TLs (also my first pair of cowboy boots) in 1989 or so on the advice of a coworker who only ever wore boots, and said regardless of what I thought about cowboy boots, I should really try a pair of Lamas. I went down to the local western wear store (used to be a lot more of them around here), tried on a pair, and that was it! I've had two other pairs since then and love them. They're definitely made to a price point, and if I compare my newer pairs to the original (which my son now wears), I can tell they're not quite as well built. That said, they're really comfortable, the price is right, and they do seem to last. I had another coworker who would only wear Lucchese, but I could never bring myself to pay that kind of money!

I have a pair of boots that doesn't have an "insert" insole. The insole is a thick piece of leather that's connected to the upper and welt with the "rib" style Goodyear stitch. How would these be resoled, since any nails or pegs would puncture the insole to the iron last? Would you just limit the penetration of the nails by using shorter-than-conventional ones?
