I ran drilled WJ rotors on a HP Dana 30 in a 1998 XJ for over 100K miles. I had no issues with cracking. I used an XJ wheel bearing as a jig to drill the WJ rotors. I dissembled the wheel bearing with a press, drilled two 5/8" holes on 5 on 5" bolt pattern and bolted to the WJ rotor with 5/8" studs. I then drilled through the XJ wheel bearing holes with a 5/8" bit to make the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. I saved my "jig kit" to easily drill new replacement rotors.

Not only that, depending on your rig, 1 ton axles will make it harder to flex, and you will loose ground clearance because the differential housing hangs lower from the larger ring gear. Unless you are running massive tires, like 40"+, dana 30 with some truss and beefing up will do most people fine.

In 2015 I fully built a dana 30 and Ford 8.8 and it cost a lot to do it right. I'm running 37s in a super lightweight YJ. RcV shafts were out of my price range so I opted for g2 chromoly shafts. I'm also running true trac instead of locker again to save money and keep things from breaking. I wish I trussed it but I did not.

HI Nate, It's quite a bit to put together for your viewers so thanks for all this effort. Honestly, I made my xj a very similar way in february this year. A "built" HP30 and a "built" 8.8 combo. I have been testing the 30 since then without any locker. We'll see how she handles 35"s in long term and in different terrain. Anyway, not a bad setup at all, I'm quite happy so far. I would be less cautious with a 44 but at least it makes me stay away from the really stupid stuff. In regards to brakes, I was actually able to fit akebonos in and keep my sweet 15" alu's. I only had the use 1,25" spacers and they clear fine. Thanks again and keep on rolling :) Cheers, martin

love what you are doing here. on my 1984 cj-7 i had the tapers for the steering drilled from top down, bottom up on the pit-man arm. and re-tapered for 1/2 ton chevy parts. drag link is level. NO bump steer. no death wobble, runs tru down the hy. 4 1/2 in lift, 35 tires. added machined steel (NOT cast crap) tapers to put the steering back into correct castor, camber. I need to use my jeep on the street. heim joints are not legal in ca. D30 4:10.1 arb locker "supper" 30 axle shafts has larger u-joints. basically a D44 stuffed in a D30 housing. never failed me on the trail. no talk about a hydraulic brake booster? factory parts just junk the vacuum booster get 1000 times better braking. but must get a better ps pump. and this gives you a ram to help work the steering.

Includes 30 spline chromoly shafts, disc brake conversion, and eaton e-locker. Bolt in. Do you know about eastcoastgearsupply? Would you recommend this axle? Seems like a great deal considering the costs that you were showing and not much time or effort on my part. Its a rear axle not front though. I think the Dana 35 gotta go before I worry about the Dana 30 front. :D
@DirtLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I've bought from them a few times with no hiccups. That's definitely not a bad price and yes front axles are substantially more money than rear. The cheapest/strongest option for a rear in my opinion is a Ford 8.8. If you toss a set of chromoly shafts and a locker in one then it is miles ahead of a dana 44 in terms of features and strength. Disc breaks, 31spline shafts and a stronger ring and pinion. But its not bolt on. You need to weld on the brackets but for either axle I would run a truss. You don't want to bend an axle housing after spending all that time and money in a new axle. 👍 Good luck!
@Ryan_Tidwell5 жыл бұрын
@@DirtLifestyle thanks for the response. I will look at the 8.8 again. It is cheaper as well. The reasons I dismissed it before: C-clips/eliminator Left and right shafts differ on the 8.8. I think the 44 shafts are the same left and right. So I could have 1 spare. ? Availability of 8.8 shafts with 5x4.5 bolt pattern. These items may not be a huge issue. I'm no expert. Thanks 😊.

Teves and Akebono are the same size. The difference is mounting bracket vs spring tensioner. People claim warping with teves but I’ve been running them for years with zero probs
@DirtLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
Interesting. We had a set of both in the shop and the akebono calipers definitely looked like they had a bigger footprint. The teves barely clear as it is! About 1/16 away from touching the rim. Everybody keeps saying the teves aren't good but It never seems like it's from personal experience. Time will tell 👍

Nate, Because of this video series and how awesome you are at showing how to fabricate, I've Decided to tackle an Ultimate Dana 30 build. Im stuck on the steering and track bar. Getting the adjustable track bar mount, has me needing to fabricate a new track bar, where do you get your heim joints at?

Nate- Honest opinion: My JKU, I’m mostly using it as a daily with off road days in New England, but not rock crawling. My gut reaction is just use chrome moly axles on the Dana 30 with front & rear gear driven limited slips. Will cost less than half of a Dana 44 front with a locker. Running 35” tires. I prefer not to break the shit out of it. I’m going to get a TJ to rebuild for that! Thoughts? Oh yeah......already trussed it.

I run a stock dana 30 with a lunchbox locker and chromoly shafts. Then a 8.25 with rotor conversion and lunchbox locker also and i can wheel all day long on 33s with no problems. It’s perfect for what i use but i’d love to do a 8.8 swap but haven’t seen the need to yet.

also Axle C gussets are necessary just form personal experience i’ve seen someone but a speed bump and jump just a little and completely bend their axle C on 31s

I'd like an update on this video. Particularly about those outer seals on the axle tube. My concern is the flex of the axle shaft when turning will allow water or debris to get into the axle tube and not be allowed to run or drain out. What's the inside of that axle tube look like today? Caked?

Can that wj knuckle swap accept 15" wheels, with the new calipers?

Could you go in more details about those bars could i make something like that in a swaybar form or is that pretty much what it is
@bojeelll91925 жыл бұрын
Now do you have to weld the spacer on or can you just leave it loose ?
@DirtLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters but I welded it for convenience. It's one less thing to mess with when replacing a hub bearing 👍

It’s not just an informative video but an awesome one brotha. Can you run 37s on that build?
@Joesph-p2y9 ай бұрын
I'm running pretty much the exact same set up in my tj. 4.88s, wj knuckes, artec truss. So when you put the wj knuckle on the upper ball joint has a gap. Looks like yours is like that also. Is that how they are suppose to be?
