When I was twelve I heard some thunder in the distance, so I went outside to bring something in that I left out under a pine tree in the yard. All of a sudden lightning struck the tree just a few feet in front of me, the one I was walking to. There was an extremely loud boom that left my ears ringing. I felt the ground shake violently and it knocked me down. I don't recall seeing any arc or flames. It was more like something exploded in the ground at the base of the tree while bark was ripped off the tree in a spiral pattern from the top down. Wood, bark and dirt rained down on me. The thing I remember most was the heat wave that hit me a few seconds later. The air was really, really hot for a moment. If I had to guess I'd say it was 150 degrees F. I thanked God for not letting me get struck. I'll never forget that day.

A long time ago now a tree near where I lived was hit by a lightning, it was a very old tree and very large. There was also a spiral pattern to the way the bark was knocked of the tree. There was a strip maybe four inches wide that curved down and around the tree and in the very center of that strip was a cut as if someone had dragged a blade down and into the wood. Maybe that was the center of the energy that passed down the tree? I've seen that only once but it sounds like something similar happened to the tree you were near.
@andyblack56874 жыл бұрын
@@andrewbrendan1579 Yes that's exactly what it looked like. I think it has to do with whether the cloud that's generating the lightning is positively charged or negatively charged - in other words, where are the electrons coming from? I mean I know electrons flow from the more negatively charged conductor, but does lightning always come down from the cloud or does it come up from the ground sometimes? I'm no scientist.

I was refueling a KC-135 air refueling tanker on a nice clear day. Out of nowhere, lightning struck the plane parked next to us. We stopped the refuel, and checked out the other plane. Lightning struck the right wing leaving a small hole, then exited the nose thru a grounding wire. It then went straight to the concrete, blasting about a six inch chunk of concrete back up against the plane, puncturing the fuselage. Fun day to say the least.

And then just as I neared the glass doors, lightning struck the tree in our backyard maybe 10 or 12 feet in front of me. All I remember was the bright flash, the crackle, the doors rattling and noticing that suddenly the tree was on fire. It was so fast, we all screamed and ran away from the doors. Then, when we checked the tree later on, the bark was charred. Another time, I was in the backseat of a car and lightning struck a pole on both sides of the road at the same time. It was wild and it was so loud. I can't believe the current didn't carry across the road between the poles and fry us.

whats so cool is that you can see the energy of the lightning mess with the cameras recording them at close range :D and the sound the lightning makes when hitting things XD

I still don’t see how people don’t take thunderstorms as a big deal, they say shh like get over it, willingly sit OUTSIDE during a storm for a SPORTING event, people never cease to amaze me

1:55 if you listen closely you can hear a brief "tick" before the thunder starts. ive heard this in another video aswell. curious as to whats causing it or if it even has implications for how lightning forms and connects

About 30 years ago I was watching a thunderstorm from the back door of a garage that I was building. For just a split second I thought "why is the wet grass suddenly making that weird fizzing noise?". Then BANG! A tree on the main road, about 200m away was hit. Scared the $#|*^% out of me!

That was awesome! One time my brother was getting in to a car, he felt the hairs stand up on his neck and as he got in to the car, the lightning struck right behind him. It woke me up out of a dead sleep. It's amazing to see though. Makes you think twice before walking out to watch a storm. I jumped every time, even though I knew what the title was to the video. Had to laugh at myself! LOL! Great compilation though! I loved it!
