When I used your plans to build mine, my dust collection is a Buckethead on a 5 gallon pail, w/the bottom compartment lined in Rockwool for some sound absorption. Finally I put a quick disconnect on the hose connecting to the saw so I can use a short hose for cleaning up the area around the saw of sawdust in 5 second bursts from the delay of the relay. Generally only takes about 3 bursts of the saw to vacuum up all the errant sawdust that didn't get sucked up the 1st time!

just completed the miter saw stand build up to the point of adding the fences. a local lumber company got an insane deal on 3/4" baltic birch plywood with melamine on one side for $48.00 per 4x8 sheet and thats what I made the miter stand with. I am being too exited about how the wings fold up and fit so well. Your plan is awesome!!

Thanks for the easy to follow plans. I've built 2 sets of base cabinets and the bench with pegboard hutch with one slight modification (shelves with cabinet door instead of drawers on one side). I just picked up this plan set and it will be my next project. I've been needing a mobile miter saw station and fatigued with manually moving my saw all over. I like the mobility. I will build this next and then start in on upper cabinets and then more base cabinets. I've installed electrical outlets and power strips so the bench systems are fully functional. It's already made a huge difference in my garage. Thanks again.

Hey Brad, great plans and fun build. I'm about to wrap it up and discovered that the standard 1-1/2" piano hinge from Home Depot has way too much play for the wings. Lateral movement front to back at the end of the wing is unbelievable. Home Depot's hinge is is very loose at the pin between the leafs. Perhaps there is a heavier hinge that you can recommend or I may try to use a pair of standard door hinges with 1/4" pin for each wing. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

I wonder, instead of triangular side supports, what you'd think about folding, angled braces, running between the bottoms of the sides and the underneath surfaces of the flip-up extensions? I saw an idea for that somewhere (I think Carl Holmgren's channel), where the hinge in the middle consisted of a bolt joining holes in the 2 wooden ends, and a stop on one that allows the joint to go a couple degrees past straight, hyperextended, so that the brace locks itself straight and open just by lifting the extension, but a touch upward on the joint allows it to collapse and fold. Seems a really elegant design, plus saves on weight and wood. Love your feedback on that idea!
@Fixthisbuildthat5 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely want it to lock in the up position, and as long as it was stable and had adjustability it sounds great.
@JusBidniss5 жыл бұрын
@@Fixthisbuildthat Yep, I checked and that guy did a strength test on his angled hinged brace where he put 150 lbs on each wing. I won't out of courtesy to you put the link here, since he also sells plans for his cart, and I don't want to put a competitor's plans for sale on your comment section. The feature I'm interested in isn't his whole cart, but just a different concept for how to prop up the wings, a triangular panel of plywood (which is found on most such carts as a general concept) vs. a folding brace, which would seem to be lighter, cheaper, and just as easy to make and operate. Although I didn't see his actual plan, the concept appears to be to cut a hardwood stick for a brace that's say 2 inches longer than needed to reach between a bracket on the side of the cabinet and a bracket underneath the wing. Cut the stick in half, 2 inches from the center. Drill holes and install a bolt and nut on each of the upper and lower ends to attach them to the brackets and create hinges. Hinge the middle by drilling a hole in the end of the shorter piece, and a hole 2 inches from the end in the longer piece, and connect them with a bolt and nut. Install a stop to the 2 inch longer overhanging end that's past the bolt, attached to the side of the brace so that it retains the shorter brace piece from moving past it, causing the jointed brace to only fold up for storage, but when it falls into its 'straight' position (actually a couple degrees past straight), the stop prevents the brace from folding downward. So most of the weight is on the bolts and holes, with some of it (due to the 2 degree hyperextension) on the stop. This allows the user to lift the wing, and the brace falls out of the storage location and unfolds from bent to straight, to take the weight of the wing. An upward touch on the middle of the hinge while supporting/holding the wing collapses the brace, allowing the wing to fold down and the brace's middle hinge to fold upward (so the bit of hyperextension was to lock it and prevent it collapsing on its own). Seems pretty ingenious, and I've tried searching for it elsewhere, even as a manufactured brace, but haven't seen anything like it. Anyway, just thought I'd pass it along for your consideration, as it seem to be functionality in line with your general design philosophy. Good luck!

Hey Brad, nice plans and I have knocked out the base.but One bit of feedback is that 39” is much too high IMO. Maybe for a 6-6 woodworker and/or lighter stock but at 5-9 and trying to heft a 8/4 piece of walnut to that height is a bit much. I’m going to need to go back and adjust down by about 5”. I recommend others looking to build this consider the height that works for you and adjust accordingly.

I finally finished this having had bit la of time over the last few weeks. it is fantastic. well worth the time. methinks brad’s head may explode were he to see it and see the lack of symmetry in the screws. but it was too cold up here to plane that out. it was eyeballed. some tips for newbies from a newbie: - get pre counter sunk piano hinges. i used #8 5/8” screws and put them in all the holes. and the wings wouldn’t fold down cuz the heads stuck up. so i had to screw in every other (and the opposite on the other side) to get them to fold down *question for experienced folks - are there flat wood screws? - invest in a counter sink bit. i used to bigger bit as i didn’t have one and it ain’t pretty. - if you have a smaller mitre saw, like my dewalt mitre saw, wait to make the fences until you’ve made the box and wings as well as putting your mitre saw on top (don’t fully screw it down yet) to make longer fences that will extend up to your saw’s fence. - for the above statement - i realized this extension would be helpful after putting in the saw. i didn’t realize it was not centered and slightly askew. so my fences look a bit angled. and again, would likely make brad’s head explode :-). - i made a “mistake” on one side and the cut out is at the back. having said that, it worked out better for me to line up the screw on the support to the wing. let’s chok that up to a happy accident. - you’ll need more screws than you think. overall - this was a fantastic set of plans that are perfect as is and gave me an opportunity to think and adjust to fit my needs. it is compact. i use the shelves for tool storage and it’s been awesome. so many lesson learned for future projects. have fun with it!

I have the same issue with #8, 5/8" screws, lol! There is a flat head screw (think they call in pan head) and will head to the HW store to check this out. Worst case, drill new holes into one side of piano hinge where the other side does not touch!

I have all the pieces cut out of Baltic birch plywood with melamine on one side. its going to be a sturdy miter saw cabinet!! When I measured out the position for the doubled 10.5 inch pieces in the underside of the extension wings I came to 22 inches rather than 20.25 inches. The support wings are 23 inches on the short side and 28 inches on the long side. Please check me on that before I commit to screws and glue. I purchased a Massca pocket hole jig and made a bench top holder out of baltic birch plywood and that made the pocket hole portion a breeze. I am excited to have this cabinet completed.

Brad: I want to thank you for publishing this video and am purchasing the plans. I have a 12" Dewalt Compound Sliding Miter Saw and a contractor stand. Since I am getting up in years the 12" miter saw is just getting to heavy to store and then have to set it up on the contractor stand every time I need want to do a project. This seems to be a great solution for my limited shop space, which seems to be a common issue for most weekend, project, woodworkers. I have read a lot of comments and there are some concerns expressed about strength of the wings. My thoughts are that they are pretty strong as the weight on the outside of wings is transferred to the bottom of the cabinet. One question: Could sanded 3/4" pine be used instead of birch plywood? I know that the birch looks nicer but is there any strength reason you chose birch?

Where did you get those casters? I like the large brake pedal; a lot of brakes on casters are too small to be foot operated.

Another quarantine project I built to improve my shop. Thanks, Brad. Great plans. Could have used one more dimension on the cutoff of the wings, but ultimately it wasn't critical. How has the 4-gallon vacuum worked for you? Does it provide enough suction? Thanks.

Do you have plans for the original mitre saw stand you mentioned at the start of the video?

You have become my favorite channel Brad. I feel like everything you make for your shop, I've either been wanting to make or have already made (but yours are better). Can't wait to buy plans for this and make it!!!

How did the Cyclone Dust topper work out? Was considering using it as well for my build of your plan.

Coupled with the small vac it was not good enough. And too big to combine with the big one

Awesome miter stand, I just purchased your plans I have a question. Do you install tape measure on the right side of the saw? If so what measurements would be on the right side ? Thanks
