Graham goes over every inch of his D-MAX build to show you how to build a dual cab that can tackle the hardest 4WD tracks in Australia AND long distance touring!
Watch for all of the most important mods you can make to your 4WD to build a more capable, reliable and enjoyable machine! Graham goes over every inch of his D-MAX build to show you how to build a dual cab that can tackle the hardest 4WD tracks in Australia AND epic long distance touring!
Just a few of the mods Graham's made:
- Suspension is one of the BEST mods you can make to your 4WD! In most cases, installing a 2 inch lift kit will give you the clearance you need to take those harder lines. Good quality lift kits won’t sacrifice your handling either, keeping great on-road performance.
- If you’ve got a dual cab ute, a good 4WD canopy is an EPIC mod. Carrying all your gear safely and securely, keeping it out of the mud and dust is something that’ll keep you out bush for longer. Canopies also let you get creative with mounting roof racks, recovery equipment and roof storage!
- Installing a 12v system makes life on the road THAT much easier! Running led strip lights in the car, installing a portable fridge, battery management systems and solar controllers are just a few things to consider.
- If you’re doing tough tracks you NEED a winch! Winching up hard tracks is something we’re all too used to, and installing a winch has saved our skin countless times.
- The best 4WD tyres are the ones that suit your driving style. If you’re in and out of bog holes a set of muddies are the go, but if you’re looking at more time on tamer tracks, good all terrain tyres are perfect.
- Getting the right barwork for your 4WD can save you bigtime in the long run. Strong bull bars can save you from expensive body damage, add recovery points and let you mount spotlights, lightbars and winches!
- Underbody bashplates protect VITAL components from damage. Underbody protection means you don’t need to worry about bent driveshafts and cracked sumps.
- Front locker vs rear locker. The age old question! Get more traction, go further and see more.

Really needed a winch when at age 12, I got my best mate’s dad’s 4x4 stuck in what I thought was a creek and turned out to be a 5ft deep bog hole hahaha. Didn’t have any vehicles on the farm to recover so we had to wait a few hours for another mates truck to pull her out. Plenty of winch worthy trees around that hole

2019 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. We took it 4wding about 2 months ago completely stock and the factory bash plate is bent in exactly like the one you guys showed in the video, we luckily got a way with no drivetrain damage but we don’t have the money to replace them and when we do we will most likely end up bashing them again, we would love a set of underbody protection so the next time we go out we don’t have to worry about potentially going home on the back off a tow truck, cheers Graham and Shauno.

I have a 2019 Holden Colorado. And one time I was out at the Riverstone tracks and there was a bunch of people in their underpants running towards us covered in mud and there said they where stuck. And somehow they got a brand new 4x2 Toyota hilux stuck head first into a bog hole. And we had no winch so we got a ratchet strap and hooked to the rear tow bar and tried to pull them out but no luck. And that’s why we needed a winch.😂

Thanks, Graham, for featuring this useful topic on modification and the things to consider. I am very keen to do some mods to my Isuzu D-max but do not know where exactly or how to start, and the considerations to make without unknowingly 'harming' my D-max in the long run. And this video answers my questions. Wonderful, beneficial video for 4WD enthusiasts!

2009 RC Holden Colorado The most corrugated track we've been on is Useless Loop Road on the way to the most Western Point of Australia, Steep Point/Shelter Bay. Was a fun and bumpy drive in towing the tinny! Gotta say there was no better view then coming over that final hill after a couple hours of corrugation to see the amazing beach! Can't wait to go back and crack an iron jack there again, the views are stunning and the sunsets unreal! Next time will be definitely making time to shoot across to Dirk Harthog as well! :)

Going up the James Price Point road north of Broome early in the season, got through a couple of big waterholes across the road, third time was unlucky, went in and bellied the Colorado in some deep ruts, spent 2 hours trying to dig it out, water pouring into the ute. Finally someone came along and dragged me out, a winch would have had me out in minutes. I'll need one for my new Cannon ute.

The corrugation on the road into Weipa, in the same trip I saw a boat trailer snapped in half and my brothers GU TD42 shattered the tie rod end and lost steering while at 100km/hr on the dirt. Where he went off into the bush it was a miracle there were no trees. I've got the dash cam footage if you're interested. That same corrugation detached my UHF antenna, it was carnage.

Afternoon, The time I wish I had a winch would have to be when myself and two of my mates went for a 4wdin a stock rodeo around my family farm near glasshouse, the sun was going down and when were just heading out. to cut a long story short we were driving up a track when we slid of the side of the hill siding into two big trees. one tree was on the rear diver door and the other was behind the tray. this cased us to not be able to go forward and not be able to go back we were stuck. We had to walk out of the track and down to the farmer from Maleny Black Angus who had a winch fitted to his car. we drove down and hook up a snatch block and pull the ute sideways off the trees. After the mammoth of a weekend we vote never to go 4wding without a winch

After a few hiccups with all the lads getting stuck, snapping bits and pieces or even a punctured tire. Great suggestions that make sense. My trick is to apply trail mods with vehicles in the full-size class like the Ford Super-Duty F250 or F350 (new or used), especially the older diesel models prior to emissions on them which plugged their power outputs up. Although the durable big petrol V8 engine or older V10 made for good off-road torque with hauling grace, too. Being over 6 feet tall,I like my full-size trucks better over smaller double-cab rigs due to leg room constraints, as well as headroom.

Nice video, I just realised it's quite a few years ago now this video was made.. Most corrugated track I've ever been on was the border track Victoria South Australia. So straight but bumpy. Never ending. And UHF, camping with mates years ago, on the backwaters of the Murray River. 9pm my mate and I went searching for wood down a few dirt tracks. But could not find the campsite on our return. Took us till 1am. Funny thing our new car has no USB radio. It costs so much now, to build up a brand new 4wd. My wife keeps going off about what it all costs. Lift, front bar, all terrain tires, rims, suspension improvements. Even recovery points never ending. It's our first brand new car, and when we eventually get a UHF, I want it professionally done. No wires, radio under the dash etc. receiver on a magnetic hook that plugs in when you want it and put away when not in use. You know another funny thing. This car doesn't even have a CD player. It's good for Spotify if you have Wi-Fi range. Haha.

Re the Fulcrum lift kit, last November had Fulcrum replace the springs, shocks and bushes on my 2003 Nissan Patrol and couldn't be happier as this car took me over the Telegraph Road to the tip of Cape York and if there is a more corrugated road I haven't been on it. But now I have just purchased a brand new Ford Ranger (2 days ago) and am about to go through the setup procedure. Already ordered the Bull Bar, Winch, UHF Radio, Snorkel and a Canopy to replace the tub. Next is the LIft Kit and power in the canopy. So a Fulcrum Lift Kit from Fulcrum would be fantastic. PS: So are many great tips in this video that I saved it.

The worst track I have done in my 2005 Holden rodeo was the Cardabia-Ningaloo road!! 50km long track that takes you from the Minilya-Exmouth road to the stunning ningaloo coast line!! This took its toll on both car and boat, with canopy, bulbar, spotties rattling loose, boat and trailer moving all over the place!! This has to be the roughest 2 hours on corrugation yet so this lift Kit would go a long way!! Cheers Graham

I got stuck in my old LN107 (without a winch) on my own bloody driveway after a big rain. Went to go around the corrugations to save myself from being covered in coffee and ended up dropping the left wheels off the shoulder and instantly ended up on the rear axle and front lower control arm. Lol. In the moment I lost my coffee out of the holder and it ended up through my air vents. Everything smelt like coffee for months. 😂 What a knob!

Just bought my first 4WD, a Nissan Navara D40 series 6. Bash plates are one of the first mods I want to get as I took my dad's car out to the Flinders in SA and bottomed out a few times. Did no damage, thank god, but knowing that its something I'm a bit clumsy with, definitely going to protect my own cars undercarage!!

G'day Graham!! Love your work mate! Only a month ago a mate and I drove billygoats bluff track, while we sat on the edge of the Ridge and crack a beer I couldn't help but think how much I need a fridge!! There's nothing better then reaching into a cold fridge for a beer after a big day on the tracks! Also what I love about the mycoolman fridge is that you can take the whole fridge out the ya favourite fishing spot and you can keep on going with a battery!! Bloody awesome stuff!!

Fridge: 35 degrees out on a track up at wombat state Forrest, was the third day into the trip, we had just finished a tough track full of rock climbs. Ice in the eskys all melted so had nothing but warm water...once we pulled up back to camp for our last night we were all wishing one of us had a fridge full of ice cold bevs 🤤🤤

Man, I could do with a winch! 4 weeks ago after I put a Fulcrum 2 inch lift into my 2016 Hilux (yes I watched your DIY Video) I thought I was Mr. Invincible so I set out to do Hayden St, Mount Rascle QLD at about 5 pm... Long story short I got stuck on a rock step and after an hour of rearranging rocks to make a ramp, filling the cab with dust, tearing chunks out of all for wheels I had to humbly call up a mate to pull me out in dark looking pretty red-faced!!

I was at glasshouse mountains and decided to go through a deep mud hole cause the beast was getting through the tracks great. There was no getting out of this hole as we only went in 1 car and the mud was half way up the doors...Damn I wish I had a winch! Stuck there for 2 hours with the motor running before we tracked someone down to help. That was a lot repairs!

I was on a trip with mates out bush NSW. We were in a convoy of 3, me being the last. We had four cases of beer on the back of my mates tray who was driving in the middle. I saw his tie downs coming loose then watched one case fall off followed by the other 3 over a period or 2 or 3 minutes. There was no mobile coverage and I couldnt call him because I didnt have a UHF in my car. A UHF would have come in handy then lol I eventually got him to stop with the horn but the damage was done.

Hey Graham. Love the way you guys been going lately. As for me..... At present car less but building a 4.2td Gu n have only just started the build. Am finally in planning to do our first cape trip wanting to put bash plates ect on it to make it the best tourer for bang for buck also need radios ect or any other give away ya doing lol 🤣 any help would be amazing. We were planing a month long trip but brother Mrs said only two weeks so plan is now a boy's trip at the very start of the dry like you guys did this year then a family trip at the end of the dry ... Its funny when ya start a build even with years n years of experience reminder vids like this often remind us of thing s we over look .. as for radio .... Too many to mention. Specially when it comes to recovering other s that ya only just meet on the track lmao no radio makes communication a lot harder specially dealing with recovering novices. Also a bit of a loner n do a lot of trips by myself. Hence winches recovery gear n everything like that is essential. As for fridges n shit I'm technically no fixed abode n. Keeping it this way ... So I can finally do the big lap lol. As for what makes ya thirsty... Remember when ya first started out... Building a truck from nothing with nothing as a kid 😂 thanks to life I'm doing that again lol I think it's great as it gives me the chance to change my life n give me a better lifestyle. Again cheers n to others reading good luck n. Hope to see ya s out on the tracks ;) fingers crossed I get this build done before the trip n even get the wagon chopped. That's the plan anyways as long as money n time allow ;)

On queens birthday this weekend i did a fun little track out of walhalla in my 2015 hilux with some mates. Ended up tearing off my stock bash plates and turning them into Z shape trying to get up a little hill climb out of a creek. Now my sump is exposed and really needs some more protection!!! New aftermarket bash plates would be amazing!!

3 CARS 500 METERS 22 HOURS IN A THUNDERSTORM went on a recovery for a friend before going for a beach run. On my way I never thought I’d be driving home at the same time the next day! the only thing to get us out the next day after a filthy wet freezing night was my friend arriving with a winch. So much sage advice here Graham. Love your canopy and would like to see one this good on my Triton (one day). I've certainly got some ideas from this video on a few worthwhile tweaks to my current setup. One thing I really hope subscribers take keen notice of is Grahams advice about where to put weight. Everything heavy in my ute is over or forward of the rear axle. With the exception of a 30 litre water tank in the back right corner. It might not seem like much, but it's too much weight in the wrong spot and does affect stability. It needs to be moved, at least to the centre line of the vehicle.

4 years ago I bought my first Nissan, I had always been a Toyota man and made the switch to the dark side. I had finished work on a summers night and decided to take my kelpie down the beach for a swim, I had decided to go to a secluded beach just out of town, with a bit of creedance playing and a bundy can in hand nothing was stopping me! So I thought.. to get to this beach I had to cross a small section of salt flats, turns out this salt flats was incredibly wet! The patrol went down just as quick as my first rum! With no phone reception and no recovery gear I grabbed the dog and another rum and we made the 5km walk back to town where I got a few mates ready for a recovery. Well.. 11:30pm the patrol finally got pulled to safety, a 5 hour recovery mission it was an absolute mission. I needed a winch, a UHF to call someone, a fridge to keep my beers cold, I had nothing. Hell it was a big mission to get it out but well worth it, it taught me a lot about salt flats, the importance of recovery gear and to stay the f*ck off salt flats! Cheers 🍻

Graham Ive got a 2015 Dmax single cab inspired by you of course. Me and my mate were four wheeling out at glassy we came across a big bog hole just at the end of the track we were finishing, with out hesitating I didn't check the depth or what was in it and paid the ultimate price of hitting a rock that some one had rolled into the hole as a joke this punched a big nasty hole straight through the sump resulting us waiting for a tow tuck and lots of oil missing. this wouldn't of happened if I had a good quality bash plate like in this video. Cheers fellers love the content keep it up.

One of my biggest dreams has always been to go to the tip of cape york with a group of my closest mates. take a chair up, a few rods and definitely a cold beer. Watch the sunset and just like most times we go fishing, catch nothing. But, fishing isn's always about catching fish, its about the experience. The experience of being with your best mates making it all the way up to the tip, and taking the my coolman right to the tip with the battery pack and have perfect ice cold beer is the biggest dream ever!

We went up to Jamison for the weekend and we went down Axe track in the dry. Next couple of days the rains came in bucketloads then we went to go home and tried to drive out. I had 33” muds but even that was not enough. So out came the good ol turfor winch and hand winching with 3 mates for the next 12 hours, with a bit of sleep on a very step wet hill in the swags. We got out but didn’t get to work the next day. So an electric winch would be the best, but I guess I’m a bit late for the prize
